Can You Felt Into ANY Fabric? A 2d flat needle felting experiment

  • In this video, I try to needle felt into some fabric that I have in my stash. I know that a lot of felters have preferences for which fabrics they like to use in their flat felting, aside from regular wool fabrics. I thought I would try out some fabrics, one cotton, one an acrylic blend, that I already had to see if they would be suitable for felting into. I learned a few interesting lessons, but the short answer is definitely that I prefer felting into wool! This is why it's important to try a little sample project onto a piece of material before you start a big long project!

    I usually put my project in the hoop the wrong way so it sits directly on my felting surface. Also, having a firmer surface like styrofoam (the kind they use for insulation) helps to support the painting better while you' re felting. Using a smaller gauge needle helps. I avoid really fine or heavy fabrics as they tend to run if they are fine and buckle when they are heavy.

      Oh that’s a good idea, putting the hoop the other way! I’ll have to remember that!!

    Have you ever tried putting felt behind the fabric? I wonder if that wouldn't make it felt better on the surface.

      I haven’t tried that, but it certainly should work! That way, your fiber would stick to anything!

    Hi, really good experiments, as with anything creative, it's trial and era, the fluffyness gave them texture and stands out :)

    ❤ Hi this idea looks so cool,, I was even thinking of a way to use fabric on soap insted of the normal felting wool, by stiching the fabric around the soap as close as you can get it to the inclosed soap I think it would work.and would give a differant look, plus little decals can be stiched on to, what do you think of this idea, do you think it would work.?

    • @AssemblyRequiredCrafts

      I think that would work! It would be like a little washcloth wrapped around your soap! Fun!

      @@AssemblyRequiredCrafts I tryed it, and yes it does work great, even stiched on some decals from differant colored felt, I'm going to order a bag set of felting wool you get a storage bag with all the tools you need.

    I wonder if you could wet felt the back and use a depiller/fabric shaver to remove some of the fuzz on the front.

    Do you think damp fabric would have worked better with regard to grabbing and holding the fiber? Kind of reminds me of flocked wall covering.

    • @AssemblyRequiredCrafts
      @AssemblyRequiredCrafts  3 роки тому

      Maybe. I could also try wet felting it, now that there's some fiber on the other side to grab on. Experimenting is fun, even though half the time they fail miserably! :)

    great demo...I have a question..i have lots of offcuts from normal craft felt sheets ...can these be used to needle felt to use them up? or won't it work? i have never tried needle felting so wondered! thankyou..hope someone will know as i cannot find anything on here..

      They should definitely work as a background to needle felt into, maybe not perfectly, but at least better than some of these fabrics! I bet you could layer little craft felt shapes between layers of wool for extra texture and color.. the outside layers of wool should grab onto each other through the felt. Definitely worth a try anyway!

    Do I need to spray adhesive on the back?

    • @AssemblyRequiredCrafts
      @AssemblyRequiredCrafts  Рік тому +1

      Maybe after you are finished felting into a type of fabric that didn’t work very well, some adhesive on the back could keep your work from all coming out? I haven’t tried it, but it sounds like an interesting experiment!

    Hi, good to see that you tried, but keep trying I am sure you will be successful.
    Just one hint, if you understand the concept of Felting, you would come to good result sooner … : ).
    Kind of cheeky, haven’t given you a method to do it, but then you would loose the fun part of exploring.

      lol, thank you. I do know that you can felt into felt and wool sweaters, so I wanted to try some unusual fabrics. I’ve seen people felt into denim so I was curious to see what else might work. I definitely think the failures are the interesting part! 😂

      @@AssemblyRequiredCraftsBy the way, have you been successful with the fabrics you showed

    • @AssemblyRequiredCrafts
      @AssemblyRequiredCrafts  2 роки тому

      @@Devrat1 I haven’t gone back to try any of these fabrics again because they definitely weren’t better than felt. So, for the few 2d felted pieces I’ve done since this experiment, I’ve stuck with what I know will work (I mostly do 3d felting, so I don’t have to worry about background fabrics very often!)

      @@AssemblyRequiredCrafts hi, if you ever give it another shot, try felting the same color wool rover from back, this way the rovers would felt with each other and hold.

      @@Devrat1 oh that’s a good idea, or put a layer of felt behind it, to kind of lock it together
