The Basics: How to Needle Felt (Dry Felting)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 сер 2024
- Dry needle felting is a craft that anyone can learn. It's a matter of having a few needles, some foam, and wool in the form of roving or yarn. After that, you can pretty much embellish anything.
The sky's the limit on design, so let your imagination run wild! You can freeform your needle felting or stick to molds until you get more comfortable, but needle felting is easy to get addicted to. I'm going to show you some of the basics, so we can work on some beginner projects in future videos.

Great to see a video of someone showing how to do it without selling something or making it too complex, thank you
Honestly if your a self determined learner with passion for something people like you and you tube can be a real blessing! I've taught myself sculpting so nursing 15 yrs injury now etsy seller of ooak fairies , elves, fantasy creatures now I'm learning needle felting! Thank you so much for taking time to teach a bit♥️♥️♥️♥️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thanks so much for this. You have no idea how difficult it had been for me to find a simple beginners tutorial. This was perfect!
For a beginners project, this video is absolutely perfect. Yessss, the needle DOES hurt. I learned the hard way. Your presentation is superb. Recently had surgery on my left hand so finding project where I could mainly use my good hand is brilliant. Well done.
The fact that you added amazon links to all the supplies needed is so awesome. Thank you!!!
High Sydney, I can’t find the amazon links?
I love your personality. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your needle felting video!
Thanks! I'm glad you did, too!
Same! I just came across it from searching about needle felting on google as have seen work in it and want to try it out, great tutorial 👍🏻
Just found this..I’m a complete newbie and your video is perfect for learning first steps...you explain it so well!
Very good tutorial. Clear and simple explanations. Thank you.
☘️🌝🌲
This seems like everything I just needed to know. Thank you.
Very helpful. Concise and clear information.
Very nice, no-nonsense instructions! Thank you.
This video is excellent. Thank you so much for showing me a new craft. I think there may be a starter kit in my future, and I look forward to learning more from you. ☺️
I love this vid because I’m getting into needle felting and I just bought a starter kit and this is perfect btw I just found your channel 😊
Great video, very informative so thank you.
This was a perfect beginners video, thank you sooooo muchhhh!!!!! ❤❤❤
I've been going through quite few videos and their good. Only I'm waiting for the lesson. My true questions or curiosity was, many ways and materials. 🙏Thank You 😊
Thank you very informative as a novice to this technique
Thanks for this tutorial. It is very inspiring👍
Thank you very much. This was a super helpful tutorial.
You’re welcome, I’m so glad!
Best introduction yet!
Lori-Ann Janess Thank you! 😊
very helpful information, thanks for sharing!
That would be good to decorate sweaters and fleece pants.
wow! I never heard of that technique, but I just also came across the embellishing machine by baby lock!
Thank you, very helpful!
great video, just got my supplies the other day and this is the first time I've had a chance to try it. Suggestion, what about using an orange stick (manicure) to hold the yarn so you won't have a chance of hitting your finger tips?
Thank you. I hope you enjoy it. That's a good idea - they sell finger guards for this particular craft, but I guess I like to live dangerously. :o
would have been nice to see the christmas ornament you were talking about. thanks for sharing - wondering whether Id have the patience for this! :-)
They can be found here - ua-cam.com/video/3Q_5jmq6ZLs/v-deo.html
I need to try this out 😍
0JReynolds Yes! Needle felting is wonderful - definitely worth a try. I have a felted Christmas ornament video coming out this week, so be on the lookout! Thanks for watching. :)
I use a sponge to replace a felting board, I found that from a felting hack sort of video, is there any major differences?
+Shawna Lim Jie Yi The foam is denser and thicker, allowing you to work with longer needles. I have never used a sponge, so I can't say much for the sponge material, or what it's like to work with one. Do you find that the needle glides just easily in and out of the sponge? What type of sponge do you use - do you find that the type matters?
a sponge works really well
Shawna Lim Jie Yi it might be too light to felt
My brother uses the same icon you have for your UA-cam as his Facebook profile picture! I cant think of the nme of the game though.
Cool
There r multi needle which makes is way much faster. Thank you for the video
Moe Changavar Yes, there are! My fave is the Clover pen, which can use 1-3 needles.
Someone mentioned you did ad Amazone-links for the used materials... Where can I see them? Thanks for the lovely video!
The amazon storefront link for materials is located in the video description.
Thank you for such a great video, it was really informative to me who is just getting interested in felting. I was wondering the white wool strand you used does that need to be real wool or can it be a blended fabric like polyester/wool.
Sylvia Pringle 100% wool always works best.
Thanks for the video, at the moment of washing the piece, the part felted doesn´t come out? Obviously you wash it bay hand.
Wash by hand, in cold water. The felting should hold as long as it was fully felted.
Knots and Kneedles, I've taken the liberty of linking to this video from my video here: ua-cam.com/video/gVLgzpgJInE/v-deo.html
If you have any objections, please let me know and I will remove the link immediately. Thanks!
Gonna try this with a 23 mag tattoo needle later, feel like it will either go really well or really bad
Kira Dodd You’re probably joking, but I still feel compelled to say that’s a terrible idea. 😳
no you were right, i got myself in the finger and stopped :( i think i'll stick to tattooing over felting for the moment
Would wearing a thimble or two on the main working fingers save them from getting stabbed?
Pamela Reid Yes, but a lot of the time I use my non-needling hand to adjust the fibers, so wearing thimbles would make that impossible. Some needle felters wear leather covers over their fingers to protect them. They’re usually included in felting kits now.
Perfect example of how to get wool lock, also yarn that's treated with superwash will not work, all around will shrink if washed?
Claire Will Yes, wool shrinks if washed. That's why wet felting works so well.
Yes, Superwash doesn't work because of the chemical processing it's put through. I tend to stick with 100% wool to avoid issues, although I have used it to felt into non-wool fabrics, like muslin. I have a video on here for an embroidery hoop felt project that does just that. Thank you so much for your comment, Claire.
Thank you! what's the name of intro song, I hear it everywhere but never found the name
I don't know, but it's one of the iMovie jingles. :)
i REALLY want to needle felt but I don't know where go buy wool 😓
can you tell me where u can buy it? Cuz I cant find it anywhere 😫
TheOddAnimator Well, you can usually find wool at a yarn store, locally, but if not, you can search online. Etsy or Amazon are great resources, but Joann's or Michael's may carry wool roving as well. Just be sure it's 100% wool.
I feel ya,,, ( felt ) lol
Not knowing the size of town you live in.
Not everyone lives in a megopolis. ..
So ebay is the place to check out...
I got all my stuff there,, and cheap too...
And one package was drop shipped from amazon,, and they gifted it...😆
Would it be more efficient if you use multiple needles (I don't know if there is any tool like that, I will try once felting)
Fülöp Niki Yes, there is a tool for that. The one I like and use is the Clover Felting pen ( www.amazon.com/dp/B00172TD5S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LPefBbDGQ1H27 ). Multiple needles are generally used for larger areas of felting, while single needles are for fine or more detailed work.
is it possible to use a random needle ? I don't have special needles, and I'd love to try to needle felt :)
No. Needle felting requires a special "barbed" needle (they appear as sharp notches down the sides of the needle) because that's what helps bind the wool fibers together securely. Using a random needle would only succeed in poking a lot of holes through the felt with no mixing or binding of the fibers. Does that makes sense? Felting needles are usually pretty inexpensive and come in packs of a few different sizes (there is a link in our video description for your convenience). If you want to try out needle felting, it's definitely worth the purchase, as they will last awhile as long as you use them properly (but always keep an eye on your needle and keep them AWAY from your fingers).
tlcinspirations too bad, I can't buy things (I'm not allowed to use money or leave the house) and my mother wouldn't buy it for me. I'll just use the fiber to stuff cushions and plushies then :/
Ben Colson Baker same here, I did manage to make a ball of wool tho by using a long sewing machine needle, I made the barbs like the ones in the felting needle with a Gillette Blade... Though I recommend that you just buy online from lazada or amazon or wish, what I did was extremely hard, time consuming and it wasted alot of good needles and blades. (could not buy online because my mother doesn't let me buy stuff online)
Can this be done with acrylic instead of wool?
Lee Ojascastro No. Only animal fibers will bind to each other securely.
Thank you for this beginners tutorial. One question: does the craft felt base need to be wool or will synthetic felt work too?
Wool is best. Synthetic fibers won't felt, making it a poor choice for this craft. Some can also be tough on your needles.
+tlcinspirations Thank you for your prompt answer. I'm looking forward to getting started.
Can you cut the felt not the wool
In this instance, they are one in the same. Are you referring to the roving (unfelted wool) or the completed piece of felted wool? If you’re referring to the completed piece, then yes, as long as it is completely and securely felted.
do u have to use wool yarn or can u felt with any yarn?
It's ideal to use 100% wool when dry or needle felting because it binds together best, however I have felted wool into fabrics, like cotton (see my ampersand embroidery hoop felt project). FYI, Superwash wool yarn won't work, though, because of the way it's processed. I hope this helps!

Could you use a sewing needle or sewing pi?
+The Kaitlyn Lovegood Show No. The reason you need a needle-felting needle is because they have tiny barbs up and down the needle which is what binds the wool fibers together into a solid felted fabric.
Can I use a wool blend felt sheet? And if no...could you explain why not? Thanks!
Aaynne Lamy Wool and other animal (natural) fibers are used for felting. The reason is that the wool fibers can easily be separated and pulled through your wool felt with your barbed needle, binding the fibers together securely. Craft felt as sold in a craft store is usually made with synthetics like acrylic, which will be troublesome for your needle to get through and be more difficult to felt. Also "superwash' wool will not felt due to the chemicals used in processing.
Aaynne Lamy If you're unsure as to whether something will felt, you can always test it out. Some blends may contain a very high amount of wool or other animal fibers, allowing it to felt fairly well. If you want to take out the guess work, though, just use wool.
THANKS....for the informed replies TLC. I'm trying to avoid purchasing anything that won't work since I'm on a limited retirement budget. Sooner or later I'll have to pull the plug and buy something ~ just hoping to make the wisest choice first! ***smiles***
Can you buy the wool at craft stores or certain local shops?
Some craft stores will sell 100% wool yarn, but may not have the wool roving. Michael's usually carries some roving and needle felting tools, which can also be found online. I have a local wool shop in my small town that I get my wool from, but Etsy is a great place online to find wool batting or roving. They also have wonderful needle felting starter kits. I have some Amazon links in my video description that will link you to some wool yarn and roving options to give you an idea of what to look for.
Thank you, I may want to shop locally.

Where do you buy the soft felt like that
How could you do this say on a sweat shirt? Like gnomes?
Since you likely won't be felting your wool into another animal fiber, it won't be as secure, however many people needle felt into other fibers with some success. I'm assuming it would be a cotton/poly blend sweatshirt. I would test on a small, similar fabric first. Felt into it, but don't overfelt, as the wool will start to pucker the fabric if you do. Once you're done felting, check the security of it by looking by lightly tugging on the wool on the front side, then checking the fibers on the backside. If you find that it's loose or feels insecure, try lightly felting the piece from the backside to help it bind into itself, as it likely won't lock on to any fibers in the sweatshirt. Good luck - let me know how it turns out.
You can also make 3D things too
Yes!
I always accidentally stab myself. They just leave a tiny unnoticeable mark. In all honesty, it’s not even that bad when you stab yourself. Also, for me, it doesn’t hurt when it comes out or in. It just hurts like a TINYYY bit
Hot lad it is bad when u stab ur self be cuz if u stab ur self u might get infected because the needle can be poisonous
There’s something called leather gloves you wear them only on your finger so if the needle pokes u it won’t hurt
Clacloud Dragon the only thing is that it’s SOOOOOO hard to do it with gloves on
True, true.
@@Oct292005 ikkk that’s why I don’t wear them while needle felting but than I poke myself lol
You said you can use yarn to
You can. Just make sure it's WOOL yarn. Yarn works nicely when you want to felt words or outline something, etc.
Or you can get all your studd at Hobby Lobby! :D
do i really need a certain needle? because i tried using a sewing needle and it didn't work, i was experimenting :/
Hyun Ryu You absolutely need a special needle for needle felting. They are barbed to help bind the wool fibers together. They are inexpensive and can be found in most craft stores or purchased online ( see our video description).
Oh, okay! Thank you sooooooooo much for the help!! No wonder they don't work, haha XD
I'll check the craft stores near my place an purchase one right away! Thanks for the help!! :)
A bit too long you could show how and the final product
I was just showing the basics of what needle felting is. This is not a project video. There are felting project videos available through our channel playlists, though, if you’re interested.
FYI the needles aren’t barbed, they are notched.
Hannah Fitch You’re right in that the needles are technically notched, but they are considered to be a type of reverse barb, and are usually referred to as barbed for their purpose of snagging the fibers. Barbed can also mean something that snags or that is jagged. It’s a pretty general term, but it also helps people know that these needles can hurt you worse than a standard needle if not used properly. Thanks for your comment.
i broke my neddle
This happens often, and it's usually because people don't keep their needle straight when poking in and out of the wool. The needles are very, very thin, so it's important to keep the needle straight and never put too much pressure on the needle.
You sound like Ellen Degeneres.
