  • We may be living longer, but are we living healthier? As we age, proper nutrition and exercise can help us live more fulfilling lives and enjoy our extended post-retirement years. Indeed, exercise is medicine. Cindy Chang, MD, a sports medicine physician, shares her training and expertise to provide physical activity goals and guidelines for adults. She'll also help you determine your own activity level using the "physical activity vital sign" and why this is even more important during the COVID pandemic. Recorded on 12/07/2021. I was having repeated visits to the ER when I was 68 and 69. Just as I turned 70 I started training in karate. Now as I approach 74, I am well on the way to my black belt, my weight is where it should be, my blood pressure is under control and my diabetes is reasonably well managed. If you were from around here, you may have seen me all over the place on my bike. (Gas prices these days!)
    Yeah, I'm a believer.

My motivation is to get off my medicine - high blood pressure, blood sugar and LDL. I want to put it here so I'll remember why I go biking in the morning. Thank you for this video, Dr. Chang.

I believe that when you feel good you want to move more - for me it meanes eating lightly and primarily whole food plants

This was so helpful since I can't always go to the gym since lockdowns. Lucky I have a bike and a trampoline.

You do not need a gym, never been to one walk as much as you can especially after each meal and you will have a long and healthy life. I never let people tell me what I should do. I listen to what they say, then I Mahe my own decision. Even my dr. Is a nut case. The WHO yesterday says the vaccine should be modified because if you keep giving boosters your immune system will not be able to fight against it, which means we will get sicker. It the first time they have said anything that made sense to me. Israel is now getting their 4th jab .I don't know how there are going along like lambs to the slaughter

Biking exposes one to risk of road injuries, which reduces the statistical advantage of biking.

It does as i know for sure. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I at 67 had a very serious bike accident that put me in hospital for 4 days. Things happen, but I don't regret biking. But, Yes, riding a bike requires paying attention and remembering cars are bigger than bikes. Lots more I could add.

A couple of years ago I read a great little book on natural healing called ‘My Physician, Myself’, written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention. It’s available on Amazon and well worth the read. You might also look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to 102. Anyone interested maintaining healthy senior years should read this this book, and something by Cornaro. His books are very short but very pointed.

Glad I don't fit her stats. I would be dead. I do need to find a way past my physical limitations to get some exercise however. My mother has always been active doing yard work or just on the go doing something. She is 75 and is in great shape.

50 is old. 70 is the new 40.
    That's something to accomplish.
I'm going to walk to bar instead of drive.
That way I'll get my exercise and no dui.
And if I identify as a healthy 30 year old Male
Can I go out with 25 year old girls.
