As much as I don't like the films' depiction of Denathor, I do like that they showed Boromir and Faramir sharing a much closer bond. I especially liked how Boromir immediately tries to give credit to Faramir for their victory; something which in the books Denathor would have readily accepted.

I think there are multiple reasons for why Denethor favors Boromir
    1) Denethor's wife, Finduilas, never recovered from giving birth to Faramir and regrettably Denethor was reminded of that whenever he saw Faramir.
    2) Boromir was the dutiful son, willing to do as his father asked while Faramir was more like his father and willing to push back when he thought Denethor was wrong.
    3) Denethor was always suspicious of Gandalf and mistrusted Faramir's willingness to learn from the wizard.
    4) When Denethor was still growing up included the period of time when Aragorn as Thorongil served under Ecthelion. His father's admiration of Thorongil made Denethor envious and when Faramir, who in many ways was like Aragorn came along, it was another strike against the younger son.
Denethor was basically a good man but a very hard one and with some major character flaws.

I forget whether this line is actually in the book, but in the FoTR film when Boromir retorts to Legolas at the Council of Elrond, "Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king," it seems to me that these were the words of Denethor drilled into him from a young age, which he was parroting back.

You left out that in the last few years of his life, Denethor had been using the Palintir to look at Sauron. And that Sauron had infected him. Sauron likely saw Faramir as the more dangerous enemy and so pushed Denethor away from him.

    • @legionarybooks13
      @legionarybooks13 2 роки тому +3

Exactly. Denethor had been battling Sauron psychologically for years, which no man could hope to prevail. Unfortunately, this isn't shown at all in the films. Aragorn used the Palantir once and it messed with his mind. Denethor had been using it for years.

I always had a suspicion that Denethor's treatment of Farmier had to do with the death of his mother. Since there seemed to be quite an age gap between Farmier and Boamir. Denethor must have greatly loved his wife if he blamed his younger son for her death. His unforgiveness towards Farmier led to his madness and ultimately to his death. With the threat of Mordor and Sauron gone by the end of Return of the King I'm sure Farmier became Aragorn's right hand man and a great Stewart.

In the books, Aragorn names Faramir Prince of Ithilien and one of the two commanders-in-chief of his armies. The other was a Gondorian soldier named Imrahil, who's not in the films but plays a significant role in the books. Also, something not shown in the films is Denathor's use of a Palantir, which contributed greatly to his madness. He'd been battling Sauron psychologically, while their armies clashed over a period of years. Denathor was very strong in the mind, but no man, not even Aragorn, could hope to win a psychological war against a Maiar.

It’s really unfortunate that we see so little of Boromir’s character while NOT under the influence of the ring. We’re told time and time again that he’s a great and valiant man and we get to see that side of him trying to shine through for the best, but I bet his character would’ve appeared and acted MUCH wiser if the ring didn’t have the overwhelming powers on Men that is has. I think, in a “normal” situation, Boromir would’ve been MUCH more level headed and similar to Faramir. Not that I think he’s be AS level as Faramir. There’s too much Denethor in Boromir for him to have been able to tame his intensity and passions completely and to be more or less constantly calm and appraising, like Faramir. It’s a shame because a lot of the Boromir we actually get to experience first hand in real time as the story unfolds is actually rather annoying, negative, pushy and hard headed. Sure, he may have had concerns about their paths even if the ring didn’t affect him - ALL of them had concerns. It was a dangerous journey - but I bet he would’ve been so much more of a team player and optimistic if the ring didn’t have its grip on him. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see his valiance and all of the hype that springs up around him whenever people talk about how great he was.

It’s so tragic to because you see Boromir wishing his brother would be given credit. How he says “can he not give us a moment of peace.” So often we see how because a toxic parent only loves one kid, that kid also becomes toxic. But here we see something different and it’s so refreshing to see. It also makes Boromirs death all the more tragic. Faramir has lost his brother, probably one of the few that truly cared for him.
Who’s he supposed to consult these feelings with, his father? He can’t do it with his men, they’re to busy fighting a war. I know it’s morbid to think about, but maybe that’s why he accepted the suicide mission from his father so willingly.

I got the impression denethor's dislike of faramir stemmed from jealousy. It's made clear in the books that in faramir, some of the wisdom and grimness of the old kings lives on. A bit like Aragorn but more diluted. Denethor recognises the Numinorian traits apparent In faramir but instead of celebrating them he tries to push them down while simultaneously raising the traits of his brother. Who is brave and valiant, but lacks the wisdom, patience and understanding that faramir possesses. Denethor resents the line of kings while also secretly wishing he was one. So I believe it's a combination of resentment and jealousy towards the kingliness present in faramir

  • @legionarybooks13

Compared to the books, the films really did dirty by Denathor, making him an inept, one-dimensional prick with no redeeming qualities. He had more than enough screen time that they could have explored his far more complicated relationship with Faramir. Heck, they don't even show his use of the Palantir, which he'd been using to conduct direct psychological warfare against Sauron. This went on for years, and it is a testament to Denathor's mental strength that he did not break much sooner. Heck, Aragorn used the Palantir once to openly declare himself to Sauron and that took its toll.

  • @TapCat

I think an obvious reason for Denethor preferring Boromir is that he was his first-born son and heir. For most men, the birth of your first son may be the single biggest moment of your life. And Boromir grew into a son that virtually any father would be extremely proud of so he never gave Denethor cause to turn away from what would have been his natural preference.
I would also point out that Gandalf says that Denethor loves Boromir partly because they are very different. Where the father is a master of lore, Boromir is a man of action. I'm going to assume that Gandalf knows what he was talking about because he pretty much always did.

I understand what you are trying to say, and I think that you are not worng, however you circumframe an important point, which you however do not clearly name. Faramir is indeed more like to his father than Boromir is. And this likenes, this "air of Numenor" which both have, is their main point of conflict.
I do not even think that Denethor only saw hope in strength and therefore prefered Boromir over Faramir, the latter of both does not love the sword for his brightness. Remember Denethor did not have real hope. The black thoughts entered his mind via the Palantir.
Denethor saw strength and battle as the only way to perish honerably (before he fully cracked)
And in this mindset Boromir was closer to him. He was like the Rohirrim. He valued strength and accordingly was his fathers hope on providing the honerable end.
Faramir refused desperation until tje very end, where the black shadow (black breath) finaly reached through to him.
All your reasons are valid and true. However I do not think that they are at the utter core of their conflicted relationship.
