In this video, we’re exploring the historic Dickson Public School in Cambridge, Ontario.
Dickson Public School is located in what was once known as the of Galt, now the City of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. The school house consists of a two-storey limestone building that was constructed between 1876 and 1877 at a cost of $6,000
    See my photo gallery here:
    freaktography.net/dickson-public-school-cambridge
Dickson Public School was the first public school on the west side of Galt. It was established when the need for a primary school west of the Grand River became apparent to local citizens. William Dickson Jr., the son of Galt's founder, was persuaded to sell two lots for the sum of $850, and also allowed the school to bear his family's name.
The former school was closed in 2014 despite a campaign by parents to save it, the building was deemed too old for modern use, and changing population patterns sealed its fate.
Now, 7 years after being closed and several years sitting vacant, a local developer has purchased the heritage designated building and through adaptive reuse, he will be adding 10 residential units inside while maintaining the features that make this building unique.
Join me as I get a rare opportunity and invitation to tour this 145 year old school house .

My grandmother and two great Uncles attended there from 1900 to 1910 and my Mother, father and 2 Uncles went there from 1930 to 40. I still have some of their Dickson School textbooks and school assignments and artwork from when they all attended.
Planning to donate it all to the Cambridge Archives

I claimed my tile and it now lives in my office. I went there from grades 2-5 in the 80’s. Absolutely loved that little school. The basement had the library and our gymnasium Had to learn to keep your head up or you’d run into one of the cement pillars. The bell tower was haunted. Any teacher that was leaving the school would ring the bell at the end of the school year. As kids we always said they disappeared after ringing the bell.

I was one of those “little kids” who used that tiny sink back in ‘89-90, then had class in every one of those rooms till ‘95. Talk about bringing back tons of memories! Thanks!!

Sometime in the 90's they had to enclose the stairs to bring the building up to fire code - they replaced the old wooden classroom doors as well

I remember going there when I was a kid, looks the exact same now as it did, lots of memories came flowing back especially in the basement. There were so many stories about that basement and it being haunted, always hated going down there to the bathroom. Thank you for sharing this video. Hope to see anion the future. Cheers

I spent 4 years of my life for grades 2,3,4,5. I met Chief Dan George here in full ceremonial Dress, He told us stories that were told to him as a young boy. Grade 4 class and grade 4 class from Highland School went to Toronto Airport and a DC3 flew us low over our schools. I can tell you stories!
