There is a story about Franz Stigler attending one of Charlie Brown’s family get togethers and Charlie introduced him to 25 of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins… all of whom would not be present if not for Mr. Stigler’s decision that day. All of them thanked and hugged him. I cannot imagine how wonderful Franz Stigler felt that day. These two men were foes who became brothers… a beautiful example that all Nations and people should learn from.
I also believe there is a painting of this event
Right and I heard that Charlie also dragged Mister Stigler to some get-together or other for all the families of the guys who were crew of the Ye Olde Pub. Mister Stigler had made all of those families possible as well. It's AMAZING, ASTOUNDING what simply holding back some gunfire can do.

There is a TV news story from the 1990's from a Canadian TV station that showed all the photos of the descendants of Charlie Brown and his crew! It is on UA-cam as well! They also have more video footage of Franz and Charlie hanging out just being best friends! :)

This is without a doubt the greatest war story. You hear of war stories from the Second World War of enemies showing mercy, but this one stands out because not only does Franz show mercy, but also compassion and empathy for a bomber crew that’s suppose to be his enemies. I’m a junior in Highschool and whenever I hear my friends saying all Germans were bad during WW2, I always correct saying that most Germans were not fighting for the Nazis or Hitler, but for their home. God Bless Franz and Charlie, and pray that they now fly together for eternity.

We should mention that Stigler's sense of honor came from his first leader of formation in the Lutwaffe who was already an aerial ace.
He was the one to say to his squad that if He ever heard about them shooting down another pilot in a parachute He would personally shoot them.
"I don't tell you this rules to protect our foes but your own souls, to make you able to look at yourself in the mirror when this war is over"
Stigler said that given the state of the b-17 He could only see them as pilots on parachutes so remembering his leader He couldn't shoot them down
A lessen to retain ones humanity in one of the most inhumane moments of history
An when his former instructor got told about Stigler saving the B17 he said "Yeah, thats sounds like him!"
I have watched this video so many times that I can't remember how many. What never changes are the tears rolling down my cheeks every time. So moving. x
its even more moving if you think about how horribly some Germans and his Canadian neighbors treated him after they found out and then after he dies his family not only discovers a band that tells his story but also a giant community who sees him as a hero

The reason why this event was kept secret is because nothing is as demoralizing for a soldier than to hear that the people you are fighting are human too, and just like you just following orders. During the war both sides spent so much money on dehumanizing the enemy in order to get people willing to fight for their side. And Charlie Brown knew just as well that if he went public with this knowledge it would be a death sentence for Franz Stigler.
When this story was made public Franz Stigler got a lot of comments from Canadians about being a Nazi, while also getting comments from Germans (probably neo-nazis) he was a traitor to the country.
It's something that's often overlooked when looking at wars. Most soldiers aren't career soldiers with interest in politics, it's regular people fighting for the things they've been told is the right thing.
But one of his friends from the Lutwaffe called him and asked about the history. When Stigler confirmed that it was true his friend only said:
"Well. I wouldn't expect anything else from you Stigler"
The Americans authorities swept it under the rug and Stigler couldn’t talk about it or he would have been executed as a traitor for letting them go

@@voidlessazasin1572 The Lutwaffe commanders still hade that code of honor in the sky to not shot at defensless targets like parachutes or retreating targets not able to fight anymore and while not every pilot followed this honor Stigler did and so did the commander that asked him. The navy have a simular code that if sailors fighting on a warship managed to survive the sinking of there ship they sure as hell do not deserve to be left freezing to death in the ocean.
The one part that doesn't come through as well in the song and the explanation is what makes it extra heroic. He escorted that damaged British bomber past the Atlantic Wall, a defensive line of German massive anti-aircraft guns that stretched from the south of France to the north of Holland. This B17, damaged as it was, was a sitting duck for those guns. At first Franz beckoned the British crew to turn north to neutral Sweden to avoid the Atlantic Wall, but they were too dazed to understand what he was trying to say. To then make the decision to escort this British plane past the Atlantic Wall (the very thing the allies had to punch through on D-day with more than a few soldiers) is absolutely mindblowingly heroic. By staying close to the B17 he assured it wasn't shot down by the German 88mm guns on the coast, but they very well might have, and shot him down as well.
They were Americans, however. They were just based in Britain.
Sabaton stay open to suggestions for suitable stories from fans, and they have a long list to get through - the problems are mostly in sorting them into album themes and finding time to do proper research and write them.
Franz Stigler's commanding officer had told all his subordinates "If I ever see or hear of one of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself" Franz viewed such a badly damaged aircraft as her crews' parachute, and knew they would not survive the anti-aircraft fire from the Atlantic wall - the coastal line of AA batteries which lined the coast from the Spanish border all rhe way to the northern tip of Norway, which they had to cross. He flew in close formation with them to stop those AA gun crews from opening fire, protecting them, as gunnery then was not accurate enough to single out one of two aircraft flying so close together. Shooting down Ye Olde Pub would have been sufficient to earn Stigler the Knights Cross, as he was already an ace with 27 victories.
I know Kimbolton, where Ye Olde Pub flew from, fairly well - it is within cycling distance from here, and I have cycled on what remains of the airfield taxiways and perimeter track. I have to congratulate the Yarnhub animation team on the correct markings, the K on the tail signifying the 447th Bomb Group, which consisted of four squadrons based at Kimbolton (The K being the initial letter is pure coincidence), the accuracy of the armament unique to the B-17F (the later and more numerous G variant having a chin turret while the F variant only had individual "cheek" mounted .50" machine guns, staggered with the starboard (right) side further forward to allow both gunners freedom of movement. The staggered cheek mounts were reversed in the G variant, with the port (left) being further forward. The ball turret in the belly, however is shown well oversized - the gunner in that really did have to curl into a ball, with his knees near his ears and the guns firing between his legs (the sight was betweeen his feet, with which he operated the turrent control pedals). Years ago when I was young, fit and reasonably flexible, at 5'7" (170cm) and around 108lbs (49Kg), I could NOT fit into it. I tried, in a replica one, and got stuck negotiating the hatches from fuselage to turret - maybe with practice I'd have managed it, but staying in there for up to 6 hours, unable to move more than a few mm to operate the turret and pair of .50 machine guns specially modified to operate in such a confined space?. With only a heated and insulated suit protecting me from the -44C (-47F) temperatures at the normal operating altitude of 30,000ft? Just a strap into the aircraft, as there is not enough space for a parachute. Those selected for that position had to be among the smallest aircrew of all, just to be able to fit the turret.
The B-17 was famous for its ability to take massive damage and still fly (one [All American, 41-24406, 414sqdn 97th bomb group] even survvived a mid-air ramming by a bf109, the only casualty being the bf109 pilot, and no serious injuries to the crew of the B-17F) - but the losses were huge despite that.
Very close to me (I watch flying displays there from my windows) is the former RAF station Duxford, now run by the Imperial War Museum, and home also to the American Air Museum. As you move up the pathway to the AAM entrance, you pass a long series of thick glass panels (about 75 metres of them), with little aeroplanes engraved on them (a hundred or more per panel) in detailed and accurately scaled plan-form, accurate for every squadron, group and type, and every single one representing an aircraft which did not return. It is a great and sobering visual reminder of the cost of war, and an inventive and great memorial to all the men lost in the air war. A B-17 has a crew of 10.
Also based at Duxford is the last airworthy B-17 in Europe, Sally B, which was the star of the hit (and true) movie "Memphis Belle", having been used for many external scenes filmed in the air, and she still carries the Memphis Belle markings and artwork on one side, with her own on the other, along with one chequered engine cowl, the race marking used by the original civilian purchaser and restorer, Ted White, who saved her, and which is painted there in his memory. I was for years a member of the preservation society (B-17 Preservation Ltd), so have been over every inch of that aircraft, and as a pilot myself, have even been permitted to access the full cockpit (normally out of bounds even to members). She is maintained by public donations alone as a flying memorial to all the aircraft and crew like her who ever came back. The whole theme of the movie Memphis Belle is the rarity of a B-17 crew surviving their tour of duty to return home to the US, as they were supposedly the first crew to achieve it (actually another aircraft [41-24577 "Hell's Angels", 303rd bomb group] beat them to it by a week, but the US public relations department had missed it for some reason (or didn't think the name would be good publicity) and gave the accolade to Memphs Belle. The number of those who got home is heavily weighted in favour of those from late in the war who never actually needed to complete their tour in contested operations. So for Charlie Brown to have made it back from this, the very first of his combat operations, all the way to the last of the 25 operations that comprised a tour of duty, was a pretty rare achievement.
In the other direction from me is the American Cemetery (52deg 12' 58.09" N , 0deg 03' 13.68" E) where the USAAF airmen who died in the air and still made it back as crewmembers are buried. From Google Earth you can zoom in and see how big it is, but not the far, far greater number of names inscribed on the huge memorial walls, of those who did not make it home. Some of those are buried near where they crashed, some moved to a larger war cemetery, and some repatriated to the US. others have no known grave.
Yes, Jovita and her son (Franz Stigler's daughter and grandson) were invited to the nearest concert by the band and sent VIP tickets, with a meet & greet of their own (I secretly think Joakim was hoping they would know enough additional information for him to add a verse or two!).
Joakim's accent is pretty unusual (possibly even unique), as he is half Czech, half Swedish, singing in English.
BTW, if you want to beat most native English speakers in pronunciation, Ye is pronounced the same as "The" as the y is a typographical equivalence to an extinct English letter "thorn", which was pronounced "th". In actual modern typescript it would be Þ capital þ lowercase, but the handwritten version apparently resembled a handwritten y closely enough that typesetters confused them.
The amount of honor Franz Stigler showed that day cannot be overstated. You see, the Luftwaffe had a policy in place that if a pilot shot down 30 allied aircraft, he would be awarded the Knights Cross (Highest award a pilot could earn) along with a ticket home, a way out of the war. On top of that, the B-17 was so notorious for being difficult to shoot down that German high command augmented the policy so that shooting one down would count as 3 kills towards the Knights Cross. On that day Franz was at 27 kills! Shooting down Charlie and his crew would been the final three towards his Cross and going home. This was the inspiration for the lyric "Said goodbye to the cross he deserved" as Franz not only spared Ye Old Pub, but wouldn't shoot down any more aircraft for the remainder of the war.

False, there was no ticket home for german pilots, and a B-17 was just one kill and counted as one, not three. You americans are not well tought in history, but of course I know: History is told by the victors.
Little of that is true other then that the pilot gave up the cross. The B-17 was notorious to shot down and shooting down just 2 would give him the cross and he hade already got 1 B-17 kill and this would have been an easy 2nd kill earning him the cross. However pilots were tought to have a code of honor to not shot at parachutes and shooting at this bomber that was barelly hanging together and couldent defend itself he thought would have been the same. Not every1 followed this code of honor ofc but commanders that hade flown in WW1 where this code comes from tried to teach pilots to have this code.

Following a successful air raid on the German city of Bremen, Charlie Brown's American B-17 bomber, ‘Ye Old Pub’, suffered severe damage. When German fighter ace, Franz Stigler, was ordered to shoot it down, he risked his life to escort the bomber to safety instead of attacking. Sabaton are masters of telling history in both song and video in a manner which makes it fascinating…adding quality visuals to a true WWII event. The music fits the theme so well..another master Sabaton musical tactic. Sabina…isn’t it great to be transfixed to a video as well as learning a significant event from the Second World War archives…it’s a ✅ from me.

Chivalry does not die easy! The airframe was the target and it was obvious to Franz Stigler that it would not be coming back - why murder 9 or 10 men so easily?..... My cousin downed some Argentine aircraft in 1982 - he said "I was glad to see their 'chutes! The 'plane was one thing and the men completely another". There is a story of a damaged B-17 going to Sweden, as the closest safe place to land. Swedish fighters intercepted it and radioed "If you keep going this way, we will have to shoot!" to which the B-17 replied "We know".... Swedes "You have one chance left" .... B-17 "We know"...... Swedish fighters fired.... B-17 "You are shooting too far behind!".... Swedish fighter "We know!"..... The B-17 landed safely enough at a Swedish aerodrome for the crew to survive.

I wanted to find out more about this as it re-affirms my faith in humanity even in war. Apparently shortly after they were reunited Franz Stigler was invited to be a guest of honour to a reunion of Charlie's bomber regiment. Apparently, while there Franz said to Charlie that he didn't feel he belonged there at which point Charlie gently took Franz's arm and gestured to the sizeable group of people around them and said "Franz do you see all these people here? They are the children and grandchildren of the men whose lives you saved that day".

Forgive if I am stating the obvious but the puffs of smoke as they neared their target are called flak which are shells that explode and send thousands of metal fragments, shrapnel in all directions. They can tear an aircraft apart and of course injure or kill the crew. The B-17 was a very tough aircraft and I've seen pictures of them that managed to land or controlled crash that I could not believe were still flying. They flew very high to avoid fighters and most of the flak but could not completely avoid either. That single fighter, if he had chosen to put some rounds into their remaining engine, well, if they survived, they would have been prisoners of war at best or likely simply deceased. The planes were tough and the men flying them were just a tough. I loved this true story and your reaction! Thank you!

herman goering (who had been an ace in ww1) asked one his men what he thought about shooting at pilots decending under parachute, even in their own territory. the Pilot, a ww2 ace called Galland, replied "I should consider it murder sir, and would do everything in my power to disobey such an order".
there are also verified accounts of german pilots in the air war over europe, ceasing their attacks to allow the crews of stricken bombers to bail out over germany. what Stiegler did was several steps beyond that though. he saw a crippled plane that by all accounts was cut to ribbons and when they declined to emergency land in german territory he chose to escort them back to the english channel and England. this is in some part attributed to the words of his commanding officer from his days in north africa. Gustav Rodel, commander of Jagdgeschwader 27 called the men together and told them
"You are fighter pilots, first last and always. if I ever hear of any of you shooting a man under parachute I will shoot you myself."
when Stiegler encountered Ye Olde Pub and could see the stricken, injured and terrified crew through the skin of the aircraft, he realised immediately that they were helpless and needed any kind of help.
both sides spent vast amounts of time and resources to dehumanising their enemy in their nation's eyes, so that the soldiers sailors and airmen would fight without restraint, but there were plenty on both sides who saw past that to look at the people they were fighting and spare them.

Do soldier of heaven, its about December 13th 1916, the day known as "White Friday"
Stigler's action is seen as treason, and could get him executed, however, he remembered the words of his Commanding Officer "If I ever see you shoot someone that cannot fight any more, I will shoot you down myself", or along those lines, I don't remember the exact phrase. Franz Stigler placed Honour above Fame, above orders.
Sabaton has a knack for uncovering events that History books just don't want to tell, the Ye Olde Pub and also Castle itter are 2 such events. Castle itter was a VIP Prison so to say, which had prominent French Prisoners such as the french premier. Itter is interesting because Allied troops and the German Wehrmacht fought together against the SS.
For Simple History, who did the intro and outro of this (or is it Yarnhub?); I recommend checking his lesson on Desmond Doss and the story of Audie Murphy.

If you get a chance tour the inside of a B-17. As big as it was it was very small inside even more so with all their equipment. Also I highly recommend A Higher Call which is the book this song came from.

let's not forget that the allies caused a lot of civilian victims during their bombardments in Belgium, France, and even in Switzerland! massive and above all useless bombardments! like that of Caen for example, which had been ordered by Montgomery, the bombings striped the city when the Germans had not been there for a long time....on the other hand the inhabitants paid a high price... we could cite the bombings of La Rochelle or Brest and what about that of Dresden.....completely useless and criminal, thousands of children died for nothing.
so it's nice to remember beautiful stories like that, but we forget the essential!

Would have cost to many crews their lifes... they wanted them to just shoot down that fighter and return safely.
