Yarnhub does a great job with the animation. Franz Stigler's commander had previously told them that if they ever shot someone in a parachute, he would shoot them himself. Franz felt that the B-17 being so badly damaged and unable to fight back would be akin to doing just that. 'Said goodbye to the cross', Franz needed 3 more points, which a B-17 is worth, to be awarded the Knights Cross. That would have given him privileges, including choice of assignment. The Mom Jovita Theren-Stigler is active on UA-cam, and has left comments on reaction videos to this song. The video didn't show it, but the band made sure to take time to meet with the Stigler family at the concert. Night Witches is another song that they did an animated story video for.
Great song pick for veterans day. When the story came out. Stigler would receive letters from Germany. Calling him a traitor and worse. Then also received letters from other Canadians. Call him a Nazi thug and worse.
watching Stigler salute before banking away gives me chills. knowing this was the last time they saw eachother for nearly 50 years. a true knight of the air.
I've seen this a dozen times; I am not going to get chocked up. I. am. not. going. to...heck...This is one of the best feel-good stories ever. If you want another, listen to The Last Battle. American troops and German troops combine to save a group of French POWS from the Waffen SS. Stay safe, God bless, keep rocking. Now, where did I put those tissues...
Have you guys ever listened to Tommy Johansson, one of the guitarists in Sabaton? If not, he has his own band Majestica and he also releases covers here on YT every Friday. This week it is 18 and life from Skidrow. He definitely makes it justice. He has un unbelievable vocalrange, his You Raise me Up(1 octave challenge) is incredible.
For a bit of context: Stigler was quoted as saying his old commanding officer had told him and the other pilots under him - "If I see or hear of anyone of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will kill you myself." The idea behind it is that a man parachuting out of a plane is utterly defenceless target and shooting them would be an act of cowardice/dishonour. Stigler saw Ye Olde Pub as being basically a giant metal parachute as it was so badly damaged and couldn't defend itself, just like a man parachuting from a plane, so he chose to save lives rather than take them.
When I discovered Nightwish, I also found so many other bands I had never heard of. One of them being Sabaton and boy do I love this band. They are amazing 🤘🏻🤘🏻
SABATON.....🔥 My GOD they are so good. The Video is so perfect. Beautiful words in this song... so EMOTIONAL 😢 I Really love your sincere responses ✌️ Even if you're fighting is a senseless War, never forget your Humanity. This Pilots were true Hero and Friends 🤝🏽🫂 Wish you a peaceful day 🌻 From THE NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱
War is a horrible thing, and it is wonderful when you can still see humanity and decency amongst even enemies. That German pilot would have gained respect and love from his home country for shooting down that defenseless B17, but instead took a risk of being killed for showing honor to the enemy. Very honorable in my book.
Not only that, but if he had shot down the B17, he would have had enough kills to get the Knight Cross. This just shows that the common soldier are humans just as the rest of us, no matter what flag the fight under, its those higher up in the system thats to blame.
Franz Stigler didn't just let Ye Old Pub go, he actually flew escort formation on her, to get her safely across the "Atlantic Wall" of German anti-aircraft guns on the coast. He managed to get away with this because it wasn't unheard of for a badly damaged Allied plane to surrender and be escorted to Sweden, which remained neutral in WWII.
A lesser know fact is that the Germans flew captured and repaired American and British aircraft on reconnaissance missions since the Allies might not shoot them down, assuming they were stragglers. they would escort the aircraft as far as the coast to prevent their own defenses from firing on them. This was also a practice the Allies used when inserting spies and dropping supplies to the resistance in Europe.
Told ya way better love the story all there stuff is based on true story s need to do the video for NIGHT WITCHES about a all female bomber team if they played this in highschool I would of paid attention y'all rock
I look at the world we're in now and it's hard to stay positive. People are being so horrible to each other. Sabaton is the one thing right now that keeps me from losing hope for humanity. They show that even in the most horrific circumstances there are good, decent people.
another person who did a reaction to this video said it hit home for him, for his grandfather or so served in the bomber group that the markings on the tail taht the ye old pub belonged too
One thing that they only touch on briefly in the video is that Stigler knew there were German anti-aircraft guns ahead. Charlie's bomber was flying so low and so slow that there was no chance of them missing the damaged plane, so Stigler flew so close to the bomber that the anti-aircraft gunners could not fire without hitting one of their own planes. (see 4:36)
Remember, that was not the US Airforce as they were not founded until 1947. That was the US Army Air Corps. Sabaton has chosen a genre that is endless when singing about war and the history of it. With imagination they will never run out of material.
Great story, an emotional ride from sabaton. In the UK where i live we had armistice day yesterday, November 11, 2022, Armistice Day, marks 104 years since the end of the First World War. Every year the nation comes together to remember the bravery of the men and women who played a role. I know you Souls have many songs to react to, and i think a great live song a rock masterpiece from the Irons Paschendale live is the zenith to remember those souls who fell, if you so wish good wishes to you all. ua-cam.com/video/mlU0iuw0Kpo/v-deo.html
