Thanks for your view (including the review videos on the 16-80), Yes, with hardly any doubt, the new 16-55 will be optically better, and the one extra f-stop surely is alluring. But for quite some time I've been thinking about how "good enough" may be sufficient for a long time ... not necessarily joining the rat race each and every time. (I may change my opinion, but for now, I think, I'll keep the 16-80 on my X-T5 ... with the extra range.)
I love my 16-80 f/4, but the 16-55 f/2.8 will suit my needs for indoor HS wrestling and basketball games and team photos. I'll keep the 16-80 for travel.
This was my very first Fuji lens, bundled with my very first Fuji camera, the X-T5. I still own my copy and love it. At 35mm and 50mm it resolves the 40MP sensor almost as good as the XF 35mm F2. Maybe I was just aa lucky as you and ended up with a good copy. Seems like copy invariance also affects rhe 16-55mm f/2.8 mk1. This lens was the MVP for my trip to Japan paired with my X-T2. It is weather sealed, has OIS and the aperture ring. The only true upgrade would be the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for its inage stabilization but you loose the aperture ring and some range in exchange for more light. The XF 16-80MM F4 is compact and lightweight compared to other zooms. Its perfect for travel and ideal for bodies that do not have IBIS. But it totally makes sense that you sell it to get the new 16-55mm f/2.8 mk2 for journalistic work. Good luck and happy shooting!
I had the 16/80 mounted on the X-T3 for a while and I was pretty happy BUT then I switched to the X-H2 and I realized this combo didn’t work for me. It’s mainly because the sharpness was not what I expected so I switched to the 16/55 2.8 and I never regretted my decision. Am I going to consider the V2 of the 16/55? Not sure because I expected much more of it like f/2 + Internal zoom.
The only reason I’m going to the new lens is because it’s about the same size as the 16-80. If the old one was that size I would have it instead of the 16-80. I love the range of the 16-80 but not the f stop.
Thanks for the candid discussion. I have multiple bodies (cameras, that is) and equipped two of them with the 16-80, thanks to its versatility and overall sharpness. I also have the 16-55, version 1 lens, but that sits most of the time in the bag (too heavy). However, the last few days I've been auditioning the new Tamron 18-300 (effective 27 to 450), and frankly, I'm in love. As long as there's enough light and/or I'm willing to go into the higher ISO settings, it's super. Particularly considering now I only have to go out with one lens and I'm ready for about anything. I bought it used from a Japanese seller (ebay), got it like-new for around $500 including tax and shipping. It's well on its way to becoming my go-to lens. So pleasantly surprised!
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thanks Kirk. And, back to your original question -- you LIKE the 16-80, right? So do I. You got a good one, too. My 2c, you may end up regretting getting rid of it. Not to say the 16-55 isn't wonderful, but it's 55 vs 80 mm. Plus, will that 1oz weight reduction or extra stop or two (f2.8 to 4) really change your work? I read so often folks who sell something, feel remorse and end up buying it again. Just saying.
I’ve had the XF16-80 for about four years now (using it on the X-T4) and I really like it, since I shoot mostly between f/8 and f/11, I need the 80mm focal length more than the f/2.8 aperture. On a separate and unrelated note, I recently got the XF16-50 (I wanted a new toy) mainly for the internal zooming mechanism and I’m more than happy with it. Be well Kirk.
Great video, Kirk. I'm in the same boat as I've got the 16-55 ii on preorder. Where are you selling your lenses? Seems Adorama/KEH just don't give enough money but I'm hesitant to list it on eBay. Thanks!
Hi Kirk. I’ve arrived at the same place since the lighthouse workshop. Some of my images were softer on the XT5 than they had been on the XT3. I was surprised because I couldn’t tell in the back of the camera. So, I’m going to try the new 16-55 II, which looks great given the downsizing. It will probably be my EDC lens. Then, I’m going to see if I need to “fill in” between that and my 70-300. I don’t think I will, but I’ll see. I also have the 23mm and the 90mm primes, which are wonderful lenses and the 23 is also a great EDC. Thanks for your thoughts and comments! Geoff
I was about to put my Fuji 16-55 for sale, but I put it on the camera for one last walk-about. It's ben a couple of months & it's still on my XT4. As a retired senior, & a hobby photographer, I can't financially justify the 16-55 V2. Yes V1 is large & heavy , but I managed to carry it around all day, with no physical discomfort. I'll keep it for now............
Thought provoking video, thanks Kirk. I have the old 16 55 on an XT3 and for landscape work from a tripod it hits the spot every time. As always its down to your use case and as I am thinking of doing more hiking without a tripod then the XT5 and 16 80 become more attractive. I think my main takeaway from your piece is that I just cant seem to let go of the 16 55. Its that good!
It's a great lens but for me too big and heavy the new one should be perfect because its basically the 16-80 with out the length at the long end but a 2.8 and thats what I need.
Ditto. The downside is the loss of the 55-70mm range when coupled with my 70-300mm. But I would rather have the best lenses for the 40mp sensor and accept having to crop an image occasionally. With the AF upgrade coming for the X-T5, I am hopeful that the combination with the mk 2 16-55mm finally will bring Fujifilm back to the top of the APSC game in terms of IQ, Price and Weight tradeoffs.
I've detached my 16-80 from my XT5 which came as a kit, and just bought a Sigma 18-50 f2.8. The f2.8 was the main incentive. But it's also tiny, significantly cheaper than the new 16-55 fuji and 30% lighter. Seeing how I get on with that, and may upgrade to the Fuji eventually.
Hi Kirk, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I had the 16-80mm and parted for the old version of the 16-55mm f2,8 and love it, however it is very heavy (as you said, reminds me of old heavy FX Nikon glass). So, I am going to part from MK I and look for the Mark II. And my „solution“ for the missing mm at the long end is to carry either the 50-140mm (when I am not hiking) or the lightweight 70-300mm.
I love my 16-80 and like yourself that 16-55 is tempting. I like all your points and think you should sell it. Get that 2.8 aperture it will make a big difference. As for the lose from 55-80mm I would just crop if your using that 40mg sensor. I would love to see some side by side samples at 16mm. Thanks for your video's their really great.
Had this lens and wanted to like it but the photos I got from using it didn’t give any excitement. Within a few months I sold it for 16-55 f2.8 mark 1 and haven’t looked back since. I’ve seen and test the new 16-55 and was surprised by how much lighter it is compared to the old version. I’m now contemplating getting it for the weight reduction mainly because of my event work and travel.
Kirk, I traded my 16-80 along with a bunch of other Fuji equipment to fund a Nikon Z 400 f/2.8 TC. The Fuji equipment just wasn't seeing enough use, I pared back and kept mostly the X-Pro bodies and fixed focal length lens. Doing prep sports under crappy lighting I had a greater need and use for fast glass. Something Fuji doesn't have a lot of. I still have a rack of Fuji stuff left yet to use along with the medium format GFX 100S and lenses to use; so I haven't totally left Fuji world.
I hear ya. I'm getting by with my X-T5 and the 50-140 in 1.4 crop mode just to be close to 300 2.8 area for HS night field sports. Indoors I use the 90 f2 and the 50-140. I really want a GFX but can't afford it right now. I was a Canon guy for 40 years and still have an EF 300 2.8 non IS.
I use the 16-80 a lot for the same reasons. I got it as part of a kit with the XS-10, since I already had the 18-55. True that for me the primary limit is the F4. But it’s so handy.
I had the 16-80, sold it and bought it again. But I have sold it again and bought the 16-55 M1, and I can see the difference in IQ for my Landscape photography. I also bought the 50-140 with the x1.4 Teleconverter. I know its a bigger set up but I also shot people indoors so this does both for me. It really is a personal preference and you should go with what you need to do the job. I also have the 14mm and 27mm on an x-s10 for my city photos. 8:11
The 16-80 is a great lens and I love it on my X-S10, and because I mainly shoot landscape, only f4 and softness at 80mm is acceptable to me for the versatility. The new 16-55 looks incredible though, and worth it if you're a working photographer. The new 16-50 has also piqued my interest, for everyday and traveling, but I really do shoot more telephoto and not sure I could give up 80mm lol, and I don't need the better resolving power.
I'm thinking to sell my 16-80 for the 16-55 f2.8 mkII also. It makes the most sense right now. I've really enjoyed using the 16-80 and will miss the reach but I think the pay off of f2.8 and the higher quality glass plus better resolving of 40mp is worth it.
Hey Kirk. I was just contemplating the 16-55 f2.8 ii the other day. I too have the 16-80 and loved and still lov it even though it's a little bit heavy (not too bad though). I did buy the 16-50 f2.8-4.8 which I love for the light weight and I too typically shoot f8-f13 anyway. I still have the 16-80 but force myself the take the lighter 16-50 as it supposed to resolve 40meg. I do miss the reach of the 80mm and the marked aperture ring. I also like the extra stabilization of the 16-80 even though the x-t5 has ibis the extra stabilization allows for slower shutter and lower iso for cleaner image. I keep telling myself I need f2.8, but I'm not sure I would actually shoot that low and not having the extra stabilization makes me want to just stick with what I have. I look forward to seeing how it works out for you!
The price drop on used 16-80 should be an opportunity for those on a budget or with older non-stabilized bodies. Since it has little value, I'll probably keep mine and try the mkII. I'm kind of skeptical it will be that much better and I will miss the reach.
My 16-80 is the one I use for hiking or when I have no particular plan and I want to keep the zoom range on my XT3 or XS10 at 26 Mpxls. Maybe for those using 40 Mpxls they could go for the 16-55 and compensate the shorter length with croping in post-production. I personally do this with the 100XVI which is fixed 23mm
I sold my 16-80 a little while ago, as I really didn't like it, outside as a walkaround lens it took nice photos, but mine was really not sharp enough outside the centre . I'm only using a 23, 56 and 10-24 now, and an X100VI. the 10-24 is used almost exclusively for video, I'm thinking about getting the 18-120 F/4 for video if i can get a good price
I had the old version of the 16-55 ,it's a very nice lens indeed but the versatility of the 16-80 won over the tiny bit sharpness difference. I might buy someday the new version but will keep the 16-80.If it's good enough for Andy Mumford it's plenty good for me. If i really need more sharpness and speed primes lens is my way to go. Different practice different needs
I bought this lens 8 months ago and love it. It is a bit too large for my X-T30II but with a grip it's manageable. I also use it with my X-Pro2 and this combo works better because the X-Pro2 is a much bigger and heavier camera. I would love to see Fuji creating a 18-55 V2 with WR. Still have my 10 year copy but use it much less because of the 16-80. Thanks for the great videos.
I like that idea of an 18-55 v2 such a great lens. For me the 16-80 was and is a special lens. The new 16-55 v2 will also be that. Looking forward to it.
I also had the 16-80 since it came with my X-T5. I used it for a little while and really enjoyed it, too.. but sold that to make room for the 16-55, which I preferred for its resolution and speed -- and I certainly wasn't disappointed. But ultimately.. like others, I recently parted with the 16-55 primarily due to its weight then pre-ordered the new version. Having now owned the majority of "kit zooms" at some point.. literally all of them were very good (at minimum.. and I actually kinda miss my ultralight XC 16-50 zoom) but I think this new one is about as close as I'm gonna get to a holy grail.
Hi Kirk. I can appreciate your dilemma. I have the 16-80mm f4 & really love that focal range. It is just so useful for an everyday lens for my XT-3. I have been debating picking up a used 16-55mm f2.8 lens now that newer version of this lens has been released. I know that the new lens has some advantages in reference to size & weight & somewhat better image quality, bokeh contrast, etc. The size & weight of the old lens is not an issue for me, & I may just go ahead & pull the trigger on version 1. Best wishes for your channel & thank you for the content that you provide to your viewers.
I have the same dilemma. I also have a good copy of the 16-80 and love the range of that lens, specially on my X-T3. On my X-T5 does feel a lot softer though, so I’ve considered replacing it with the new 16-55 mkii, but I feel I’d miss the extra range. Tried the new 16-50 and it’s light and great but ended up returning it, although might buy it again in the future if I see a great deal. Can’t justify the new 16-55 just yet, but it looks definitely intriguing and might once there are second hand ones available.
I am doing the same thing. I have the new 16-55 on pre-order. My copy of the 16-80 has better sharpness at close to medium distances, but gets mushier close to infinity. I already have 72mm filters for the 16-80 and the new lens takes the same filter thread. I'm pairing the new lens with my 90F2.
I'm thinking of selling my xf 16-80 to buy the new xf 16-50. Trading an old kit lens for the new one. The new Xf 16-55 II isn't a priority because i'm very satisfied with my copy of the first one. It's basically my favorite lens right now. Yeah, it is bulky, and that is a drawback.
Oh, I see the new one has some great reviews, Yes, sell if will help you get the new one, look forward to your reviews on the new one, amazing engineering from these folks.
Hi Kirk, your logic seems sound. I'd probably do the same thing but I'm hanging on to mine for now. I've also been eying that new 16-55 so I may be contemplating the same thing as you soon. Decisions...decisions!
I Kirk. Thank you for all your videos that helped increasing my knowledge, inspired me to take photos and I could stay the whole day just watching your adventures. Not so thank you for helping fueling some GAS here sometimes 😂. I bought the Xt5 one month ago and the 16-80 had been my companion for two years on my xpro3. My copy was great but was not on par with the 40mp Xt5 sensor and I struggled when light was fading away on the end of the day, specifically in travel photography. So I decided was time to make the move for a change. I always was a fan of aperture ring but honestly, more on the xpro3 with that “rectro” look. On the xt5, finding the 16-55 f/2.8 bloody heavy and expensive, I ended up watching videos of the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 and pulled the trigger here in Hong Kong and just bought that lens. No big deal the fact of assigning a command button to the aperture. I switched for the back one because holding the camera sometimes I was changing aperture without noticing it. The lens is amazing: light, sharp, fast focusing, a lot cheaper than the 16-55 f/2.8, weather sealed and even not full metal built, it’s an amazing composit/plastic material that is high quality and I can see the reason: it’s not to avoid production costs, it’s to make a product light weight that could not be possible to put so much glass inside without making so heavy. I do not regret a second making this change even if I want to remain a Fuji fan boy, I’m open to jump over the fence when I see a product that Fujifilm is not getting there with their road map (like the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2). I bought the Fujifim 70-300 for traveling and I love it for what it is (f/4 - f/5.6) because I did not want to carry another “brick”, the 50-140. Maybe the Fujifilm 70-300 shows a tiny bit more micro contrast at 70mm than the Tamron at 70mm but I’m being unfair to compare a lens at the beginning of the focal length at f/4 to another at the end and at /2.8. Tamron is, to me, a perfect lens considering such the zoom range at the amazing constant aperture of f/2.8. I’m a prime guy, my favorite lenses are the xf 18mm f/1.4 WR and a Vitrox 27mm f/1.2 mostly for work but when it comes to travel, I don’t want to be changing lenses all the time so I believe two decent zoom keep us covered. Keep your great work and a big thank you from a Portuguese that follows you from Hong Kong.
Many thanks for following along. The Tamron looks interesting but I’m a believer in going with OEM gear. Usually it’s used gear but I’m not buying the big version 1
It's hard but you can't be sentimental about kit. As a professional your equipment is your tool box and you have the best within your budget taking account of the needs of your work. Fuji should actually give you the new lens, you have been responsible for more 16-80 sales than anyone else on the planet. It's a great, undervalued lens... as long as you get a good one.
I rented then purchased the 16-80. It was the all purpose lens for my trip to Switzerland. I wanted the 120 reach and compression. I thought for a zoom it was sharp for landscape / street photography. I did not like the weight but it was lighter than the old 16-55 lens. I do not have the 16-80 due to a loss in London but will rent a new 16-55 before buying that lens. The 2.8 is a plus but that is why it is only 1oz. Lighter. I will consider 3rd party leneses to but they must be auto focus.
You wrapped it up...16-80 - great range had it too. 16-55 Mk I, great heavy lens which I rly loved but sold it off 5 Weeks ago after pre ordering the Mk II Version. Release is on the November 28.....so Im also waiting....
Im gonna get the new 16-50 f2.8-4.8 with a good Black Friday deals. Don’t care about the aperture, but a zoom lens this small and with internal zoom? That’s a must buy.
I had a chance to try a Pre-release copy of the new 16-55 f2.8 at a Fuji agent, yes it' is sharper on the XH2 but I saw little difference on the XH2-S, it's smaller and lighter than the my old 16-55 f 2.8, but here's my issue, basically Fuji built exactly the same thing in a smaller body, no OIS, no internal zoom and still f2.8. if they had kept it the same size has the original with internal zoom and made it an 18-55 f2 I would have been the first to throw my money at it and sold my old 16-55 and the Sigma art 18-35 f1.8 to help pay for it, but has it is I just don't see the advantage of spending more money on the pretty much the same thing.
Dave, I was going to get the old version when I started in the system but it was too big and heavy so I used the 18-55. Then the 16-80 came out and I was the first one in line and I got a good copy. Luck was with me.
I would give further consideration to your decision. I suspect there will be numerous occasions, aside from photo journalism, which may require the longer reach of the 16 - 80.Selling that lens for $350 would provide only 29% of the cost of the new 16 - 55. You may wish to retain the 16 - 80 as well as purchase the new lens. Yes, there would be some duplication, but you might indeed miss the benefits of the 16 - 80 in those instances outside of your photo journalism. In my photography, 24 - 84 is not enough. Therefore my 18 - 55 is no longer used.. 24 -105 on my Canon is still a bit lacking. I appreciate my 16 - 80.Then again, when all I owned was an M - 5, I made do with 35, 50 and 90 mm focal lengths. Yet I still missed longer focal lengths.Hopefully I have not made your decision as clear as mud!
I pre-ordered the new 16-55 2.8 weeks ago. I traded in my old 16-55 2.8 and other lenses to pay for it. This lens will become a real workhorse. The expected delivery date is mid-December, and I have no regrets.
I never pulled the trigger on the 16-80 due to the conflicting reviews. I have a 24-120 f/4 Nikon zoom on my DSLR, and know the range is great for a one lens kit, but again, those reviews were all over the place, so I kept my 18-55. I'll be watching the real world reviews of the new 16-55mm f/2.8. I'm also considering just going back to Nikon since Fujifilm can't actually produce what they announce.
I have the original 16-55 and yes it is heavy. I had a 18-55 but sold that. I want a lighter 24-70 equivalent but the price of the new 16-55 is very expensive. The Sigma is looking attractive but I first want Fuji to fix the af issues before I buy any more Fuji kit.
2 months ago I am considering between this lens and the Tamron 17-70mm lens, and I am glad I chose the Tamron 17-70mm lens because of the constant F2.8 and the OIS in the lens. I am using the XT3 so the OIS is important to me. I also own the old 16-55mm lens from Fujifilm and the image quality from the Tamron is not that far from it. So instead of the new 16-55mm lens from Fujifilm, you can also consider the Tamron to save some money and have a longer reach.
In the long run the Fujifilm lens will be a better choice of me. f stop ring is big for me. Im also used to 24mm although 25.5 is not that far off. The difference between 105 and 84 is also not that big a deal.
Kirk, I tried three copies of the 16-80 and had to send all three back. To say the least, I was very disappointed. After extensive, real world testing (not brick walls or charts), all three lost an easily visible amount of sharpness about half way between the center and the edge of each frame at all focal lengths and all apertures. 😩 One copy also produced very smeared detail on the edges. As you said, like it was a windstorm blowing leaves. I really wanted to like and use this lens. I also use a Nikon Z8 and the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens and found the extra focal length useful. So, I thought the 16-80 would nicely fill that need. I’ve had and used the original 16-55mm f/2.8 since it was released. A superb lens. I’ve made over 40,000 exposures with just that lens. The new one should even be better. I’ve contemplated retiring my older 16-55mm lens and picking up the newer model but the old faithful is still going strong! Consider yourself fortunate for getting a good copy of the 16-80. I know you’ll like the new 16-55. I wish you the best and many wonderful exposures to come!
Thanks Dennis. I got one of the first lenses out of the barrel as I pre ordered it immediately. Sorry you could not find a good copy that stinks. I hope quality control is better with the new 16-55.
Don't do it, if I ever sell my 16-80 it is to get another one, brand new. I am a photojournalist too and I use it a lot, I don't care about f/2.8 vs f/4 and even if the new 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II it is great, getting both it is great too. That one it is even better to the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L-IS. Past summer I won a Fujifilm contest (Spain & Portugal prize) in "The International Day of Photography" using that lens and I received a Fujifilm X-T50 + 14-45mm kit lens, but I am still using my 24mp cameras (X-H1 and X-E3) and that lens it is perfect as well as for 26 mp cameras, I don't need 40 mp for photojournalism, so I just use the X-T50 for some works, maybe it is better choice to get a 26mp camera to use that adorable lens or, a 24 mp too. If you want fast apertures, small primes are great, like the 35mm f/1.4 or other ones. I think you are wrong, you love that lens and in good light conditions you get great results even with 40mp sensors, but maybe you need a 26 mp sensor, much more to a f/2.8.
I'm still on the fence about selling it but have pre ordered the 16-55 v2. I use the 16-80 all the time as well for PJ work but on my X-T5 and X-T50. So far I have not had a big problem except for the f4 which I'm not a fan of.
@ I am thinking about to get a X-H2s because I love my X-H1, so for these cameras 16-80 it is perfect, the 16-55mm Mk II it is grate too but you know at 80mm at f/4 you have similar bokeh to a 55mm at f/2.8. I prefer staying with that lens and probably selling the 18-55…
Ok, I own a copy and it was supposed to be sharp at aperture 4.0-5.6, according to everything I saw and that is why I bought it for landscapes. Tried it as a single lens on X-T30 II, however, it was soft in the corners. Ultimately, I found another review which said it was sharpest at 5.6-8.0 from 35mm-80mm, anything else, might as well forget it. I have the XF 18-55mm f2.8-4.0 which according to a review is sharp edge to edge throughout. That has not been the case on either the X-T30 II or the X-H1, causing me to purchase the Canon R10 and RP. I must say, with all the manufacturers I have owned over the decades, Sony wins, hands down for me at least. I owned the a7R3 and a6400 with great lenses, resulting in excellent, frame worthy photos. One is hanging in my den. It might be that I do not have the Fujifilm Bodies setup properly. I owned the X-T1 and X-T2 which both took great landscapes, so, something has changed over the years. Might need to go back to the drawing board and trade in the X-T30 II and X-H1 for a X-T3, which I owned for a short time as well. Time to go back through my photos and see which cameras gave me the best results over the years. I love a lens that you can put on and forget about it, just shoot around town, the countryside, wherever you see something of interest and capturing that moment....in the 24-70mm on Canon was perfect and the 70-200mm were all I needed back in the day.
I think i never sell this lens because of its range. A perfect combo with the 70-300. Yes,it's not perfect for low light but i took some photos of a band and if you are not afraid to go up to ISO 6400 or more it's absolutely o.k. The band was happy with the results and so was i. But it's interesting, everyone compairs the 16-80 with the 16-55. I think you can't because fuji has no other lens with this focal length. 18-55 vs. 16-55 makes more sense..imo.
I used the Nikon 24-120 f4 for many years. The 16-80f4 is that lens for me. Never liked the 24-70 or 24-85 range. Not every lens has to be perfect. In my view after 40 yrs being a photographer, we all became obsessive about sharp lenses. MP, sharp, speed, AF etc have become the new drivers of photography. I understand UA-cam creators gain income from equipment sales, just like photographers don't make money from selling prints but running photography tours, selling advice rather than teaching skills. Sure, new lenses and cameras are great, but very liberating to step out of that rate race and watching the disbelieve when you step in the field with older gear, creating art when the others lot talk about their latest specs and changing systems because their current camera only has 30 mp and not 50mp, or shoot at 25fps vs 30 fps.
Jake I understand what you are saying. I have been in this business for almost 50 years and I know good glass when I see it. I sell my prints and do tours around my island. My affiliate links bring in nothing. I do this YT thing to bring in a little extra money. I'm still a part time photojournalist so my gear are tools.
I had the 16-80, sold it long ago. I know have the Sigma 18-50,2.8, and i love it. Its much cheaper than the fuji, and i am very pleased with it. Give it a look.
The 16-55 mk2 is not only faster, it’s also lighter than the 16-80. With IBIS and the ability to crop on a 40MP camera, I feel the 16-80 is getting harder to justify getting unless you really want that reach and want to save some money. For a one lens set up, the 16-55 mk2 is worth the higher cost over the 16-80 in my opinion.
I think you're making a certain mental mistake. If you want to take advantage of the capabilities of a high-resolution sensor, switching one zoom lens for another won't be a good solution. I have the 16-55mm/2.8 zoom and tested it on my X-T50, and unfortunately, it's soft on this sensor. The most reasonable solution is to use high-resolution prime lenses. I've researched what works best with a 40 MP APS-C sensor and concluded that, for landscapes, the Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 VM Super Wide Heliar III Leica M performs best optically for me. The difference in quality and detail is drastically in favor of this lens compared to Fuji optics. For street photography and light portraits, I opted for the Voigtlander 27mm/2.0 Ultron Fujifilm X. Currently, for portraits with more background blur, I use the Sigma 56mm/1.4, but my ultimate goal is to get the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm/1.2.
$350 isn’t chump change but not enough to dump a lens that has worked so well for you. Sell after the new one has thoroughly proved itself. Flip side is everyone will like be moving theirs on for the new so maybe the prices will get worse?? Decisions…
I'm going to hold onto it just in case. Only until I really know. I'm selling off three cameras I don't use and have already sold off two so the lens is paid for.
Why not do some research on the Tamron 17-70 2.8 or the Sigma 18-50 2.8 for Fuji. You may find a less expensive alternative that will work for you. Cheers!
I have that Tamron lens. f2.8 through the range, cheaper and lighter than the 16-55 V1. No aperture ring but optical performance is as good as the 16-55 though rendering is a bit different. Also weather sealed. My basic kit with my X-T5 is the Tamron and Fuji 70-300. Those two lenses have the same size filter thread. I have owned the 16-80 and the 16-55 V1. Looking at the new 16-50 although it has received good reviews I can't see any benefit over the Tamron.
For me I want the aperture ring and the extra width. Yes the Tamron is not much different from the 16-80 in the focal lengths. Much different in aperture yes but I’m going to stick with the Fuji brand.
I tried to get the Fuji 16-55mm II for a trip to Venice I'm going on this week and it would not have arrived fast enough. I have both the original 16-55mm and 16-80mm. I plan on taking the 16-80mm and a couple of f/2 primes due to the restrictions I have for carry-on.
Too much marketing hype with photography. Yes, the 16-55 has an extra stop and is generally a little sharper (only if you pixel peep). Will you really notice that much difference? I wouldn’t. $950 more and I guarantee in 6 months you’ll regret the loss of the extra length.
Stan I honestly feel the X-T5 is better than my X-T3 was. I love the lens and I’m still up in the air about selling it. But the 16-55 v2 will make my PJ life easier. I sold my XT3 and XT30 to pay for it. I didn’t need all those cameras.
Save your money, just close it down a little when you shoot if sharpness in such a big deal, besides I seem to recall you need to quadruple the megapixels to double the actual resolution on the sensor or something like that. In any event, I say wait. Let the GAS pass. I don't think you will really gain enough in my opinion. In addition to Fuji, I have some M43, and Canon, and I have a kit zoom for m43 (specs escape me at the moment) and that thing does a great job certainly for the 20mpeg sensor. I think we make far too much about incremental changes. I just up-rezed it besides and I think it more than adequate. OR rent one and do a real comparison, do that first.
As I said for me it’s a tool that sees a lot of work so for me it makes sense. If I was just doing landscapes and fun work I would keep it.
I may hold onto it as a video lens.
My 16-80 lens is pretty much crazy glued onto my X-T5. I couldn't live without it.
If you have a good copy that’s great
I had the 16/80 mounted on the X-T3 for a while and I was pretty happy BUT then I switched to the X-H2 and I realized this combo didn’t work for me.
That's great I'm glasd you were able to find a great lens for your uses.
Thanks Enrique. You and I have both been using this lens for a long while now and we both love it. Sad to see it go. I will miss the 120 focal length.
Great video, Kirk. I'm in the same boat as I've got the 16-55 ii on preorder. Where are you selling your lenses? Seems Adorama/KEH just don't give enough money but I'm hesitant to list it on eBay. Thanks!
Probably fredmiranda.com
Geoff
Geoff - Same here. I don't think Ill need to fill in either. I'll be fine.
I'll keep it for now............
same for me, the weight isn’t an issue for me, I am not a pro, not a wedding photographer and don’t have to run around with it the whole day
I'll be using it in a professional manner so for me it makes more sense.
I agree with everything you said. also hoping the AF gets better.
Let me know how you make out!
Tom - sounds like a reasonable idea.
Im with you on this. I have plenty of options from 55-80.
That is the main reason for me smaller and lighter faster f stop and the same filter size.
Yes I agree with that. The lens is so handy and for me does just about everything.
Back a few years ago I decided against the 16-55 v1 because of its size and weight. The new one should be a better fit for me.
I'll just have to see if I really miss it.
Exactly my thoughts
Fortunately, I haven’t had issues with the xt5 and this lens. Looking forward to your review on your new edition to the fuji family.
Same here. I am excited about the new lens.
I like the 16-80 but just pre-ordered the new 16-55 2.8ll. I wonder how long it will take to get one? Hope it isn't as bad as getting a x100Vl
They have worked out their supply chain issues so they should be able to fill all the pre orders.
You may be better off with staying with the 16-80.
The price drop on used 16-80 should be an opportunity for those on a budget or with older non-stabilized bodies. Since it has little value, I'll probably keep mine and try the mkII. I'm kind of skeptical it will be that much better and I will miss the reach.
I might be going the same direction.
I can easily do that with the 1.4 crop feature in the X-T5 thanks for reminding me.
Thats a good idea!
The 16-80 has its best resolution at F4 - F 5.6. I avoid getting beyond F8. At 11 its already blurry due to diffraction.
I have not had a problem shooting with this lens up to f13.
I am using the 16-80mm as my go-to lens on my X-T20. My advice: Keep yours, and buy the new one in addition.
That is what I'm going to do just to see what happens.
we need a II for this... cus the versatility of this is great.
Yup
I had the old version of the 16-55 ,it's a very nice lens indeed but the versatility of the 16-80 won over the tiny bit sharpness difference. I might buy someday the new version but will keep the 16-80.If it's good enough for Andy Mumford it's plenty good for me. If i really need more sharpness and speed primes lens is my way to go. Different practice different needs
I may keep the 16-80 for a bit after the new lens comes in just to compare.
I've been hoping that Fujifilm might launch an updated version of the 16-80, with the 40 megapixel cameras in mind. Still, maybe next year.....
Boy wouldnt that be awesome!
I agree and have pre-ordered it.
Thanks Jeffrey! Hopefully I can come up with more ideas.
For me it makes sense. Sold the X-T3 and the X-T30 to pay for it but I was not using those cameras.
That’s a great combo. I’ll be doing that as well.
Only get something you need. Otherwise it does not make a lot of sense.
Oh, I see the new one has some great reviews, Yes, sell if will help you get the new one, look forward to your reviews on the new one, amazing engineering from these folks.
I can’t wait for it to show up!
Hi Kirk, your logic seems sound. I'd probably do the same thing but I'm hanging on to mine for now. I've also been eying that new 16-55 so I may be contemplating the same thing as you soon. Decisions...decisions!
Steve - Depends if you really need it or not. If you are getting what you want now then maybe you don’t need to change.
Thanks David. I wish I could have profited from all those 16-80's.
I'm still on the fence about selling the lens. I may use it for video.
I use a 16-80 on my X-T5 and like it a lot.
Same here but I want the 2.8
You wrapped it up...16-80 - great range had it too. 16-55 Mk I, great heavy lens which I rly loved but sold it off 5 Weeks ago after pre ordering the Mk II Version. Release is on the November 28.....so Im also waiting....
Same here
Im gonna get the new 16-50 f2.8-4.8 with a good Black Friday deals. Don’t care about the aperture, but a zoom lens this small and with internal zoom? That’s a must buy.
It may work great for you. You should get a good deal.
Won't do that. I'm happy with it. And it's so versatile. I don't need 2.8 on wider lenses. If I do I go for primes, sometimes even vintage ones.
For me it makes sense for others like you maybe not.
Charles - I too used that Leica setup and went over to a DSLR for long glass. I'll keep the lens for now and see if I use it for video
Maybe rent a copy of the 16-55 mk2, do your own comparison to see if you really need the lens
That is a thought but if I wait I might not see it for awhile.
I pre-ordered the new 16-55 2.8 weeks ago. I traded in my old 16-55 2.8 and other lenses to pay for it. This lens will become a real workhorse. The expected delivery date is mid-December, and I have no regrets.
Same here!
I’ll make sure I give an accurate report of my experiences with it.
Yes an ongoing issue with Fuji
My thoughts exactly: I have sold my 16-80 and have pre-ordered the new 16-55. Now, Fuji, don’t keep me waiting too long!
Right now I need the 16-80 for work so I can't sell it yet. But the new lens is on pre-order.
I like the lens, because great with my 70-300 for walks. I’am not a Pro so I don’t care about edges…… and but keep up the good content.
Wil it’s a great match with the 70-300. Hope all is well. Have some great walks.
William - Yes Fuji does have it's issues. I'm a Canon guy from way back and if they were not so slow to mirrorless I would still be a Canon guy.
True they don’t compare that way.
Also, its 2.8 through its full range, i believe the fuji is 2.8-4.
I'll take a look but I really want the 16/24 focal range.
I feel my life has improved due to your decision. Really !
Good luck!
George - I feel the same way as you.
I'll have to look into using my primes more.
I just cannot afford anything - I have to work with what I have. I always find away!
I have sold off gear which I don't use to pay for it.
Sounds like a great trip. The 16-80 won't let you down.
Too much marketing hype with photography. Yes, the 16-55 has an extra stop and is generally a little sharper (only if you pixel peep). Will you really notice that much difference? I wouldn’t. $950 more and I guarantee in 6 months you’ll regret the loss of the extra length.
I will miss the extra length no doubt but I'll love the extras stop.
For the sake of $300, keep it Kurt. You never know, there may come a time when you regret not having it.
For now I'll hold onto it. I already have sold off gear to pay for it so its paid for already.
Keep this lens, one for 8 lens !!!!
Yes true! but I really need the f2.8
Do you REALLY need more megapixels? Ditch the camera. Keep the lens. No real need to upgrade.
Stan I honestly feel the X-T5 is better than my X-T3 was. I love the lens and I’m still up in the air about selling it. But the 16-55 v2 will make my PJ life easier. I sold my XT3 and XT30 to pay for it. I didn’t need all those cameras.
Nice video! And can't wait to see your review on 16-55 mk2!
Haha same here.
Trade off ?? not at my level..............
Missing the 55-70 range. I'll live though.
OR
rent one and do a real comparison, do that first.
For me it's the fstop at 2.8.
How did it felt to create a such clickbate thumb for an old man like you?
lol pretty darn good
ive had 2 and far end is SOFT....not that impressed
Not mine.
