- The Fujifilm lens that I never talk about is the fuji 16-55mm f2.8. The reason I never talk about it is because it's the lens you guys are always looking through when I make my videos!
However having said that! its the workhorse lens of this channel and from a fujifilm perspective is likely my most used lens! But it does have a bit of a size issue! and this has caused my eyes to wonder a little!

I'm on a similar journey. I mainly shoot street, landscape, and travel. I started with the XF 16-55mm on my X-T3, then got the Tamron 17-70, then got the Sigma 18-50. As others have said, the review from Hugh Brownstone was illuminating during my research of the Sigma. My own testing has shown that the Sigma consistently has better sharpness away from center but the Fuji is consistently sharper in the center. Actually, I'd say that my testing actually reveals the very poor sharpness of the Fuji for details anywhere near the edge of frame, at nearly all focal lengths and apertures. Surprising! That said, sharpness - at either the center or the edges - ain't everything.
The Fuji is huge and heavy, and stands out when doing street photography. The Sigma is fantastically compact and light. The Sigma also suffers greatly from purple fringing. The Tamron shines for its utility: OIS, focal range, decent IQ. I've used it primarily in the snow and other inclement conditions when it's nice to avoid changing lenses. The Sigma is great for street and everyday, which means it gets used the most! For travel, it's easy to pack the Sigma along with a couple primes and a telephoto zoom. The Fuji is...well...not getting used much any more despite my sentimental attachment to it.
I still have all three but have been trying to decide which one or two to part ways with. (Also, my primes and my 70-300 blow away all three of these mid-range zooms for IQ, focusing, user experience, etc.)
This Lens is a banger. It never disappoints me. Always great colours, in focus and sharp. no reason to go with primes if you don't need 1.4 or so. It's build like a tank and feels so. no cheap material like Tamron or sigma. it's a pure joy to use. this is my lens for a lonely island. end
I appreciate this video because you can’t ignore the facts. This Lens is heavy; it’s all about trade off. My D700 paired with the 28-300mm is heavier than this Lens paid with my X-T2. I remind myself of that and just focus on creating images. My peak design strap does it’s job and the weight is evenly distributed across my
Body. Guess what? The weight disappears as I engage with life and create. This Lens is simply beautiful. It does the job perfectly👍🏽
really appreciate all that you have said in this video. yes I too struggled with the "tipping point issue". weight/size versus versatility. I especially appreciate you bringing up the current trend that primes are best and zoom are 2nd rate. over the years I have fallen into category but in the past year I have found and admired one of my zoom, to the point its practically my first go to lens. so nice to see you confirm my new found believe. zen billings in canada
Great vid! It may be heavy, but my travel kit is the 16-55 and the 50-140. Super versatile, weather resistant, and no lens switching required if you're carrying a second camera body. I just returned from Iceland, I swear by this kit.

I originally purchased the 16-55 f/2.8 to use with my X-H2. At first I found it very useful but soon got tired lugging it around while travelling & when using it for street photography. I agree that the picture quality was excellent and the focal range very useful.
Previously I had owned an X-Pro2 which I used extensively with the 18-55 f2.8-4, and I missed this combination's weight & size.
The X-H2 is a much bigger camera all round compared with the X-Pro2, so the heavier Fuji lenses are a better match, but even so the 16-55 f2.8 had to go and was replaced by the 16-80 f4. I didn't miss the extra stop and overall performance was not significantly downgraded and the lense's stabilization appears to work well in conjunction with the X-H2 iOS.
However, you know what, I think I should have kept the 18-55 f2.8-4, as my walk around zoom. The 14mm f2.8 & 23mm f1.4 (MK1), could always be carried as back up, if needed. Better still I could always go lighter & use my 18mm f2 lens, and take advantage of the X-H2's 40 mega pixels & use the camera's inbuilt sport mode or 1.5/2 digital crop.
...next I'll be repurchasing an X-Pro2? Perhaps I should be careful for what I wish for!

This Fuji 16-55mm has been fantastic for my street photography and is a 'keeper' :) I am reducing my use of it during winter, as its f2.8 isn't so strong on gloomy, grey days or night time. The f2.8 also gives relatively little bokeh/separation unless you're relatively close to the subject and ideally using its 55mm zoom.
The weight of it hasn't bothered me, as I use a short wrist strap to help my wrist take about half of the total weight. I can do a 10 mile walk with it in my hand, with just a couple of rest breaks (but I am a big bloke). Carrying it as a second lens on long walks is a bit more borderline but I have done it.
When I carry it in my hand, it protrudes a bit to my side and feels more likely to get bumped or bashed in London crowds than my more compact 33mm lens.
But it's still a terrific lens. Use its zoom ambitiously to get the kind of distortion and or natural framing you need for each shot and you'll hugely appreciate its flexibility. Something I really miss when I'm using a prime lens.

When I'm out and about with 2 primes in my bag and I need to change lenses I always wish I had a zoom instead which is why I got the sigma 18-50. The main reason was price, but compactness and weight are an added bonus. I'm going on a trip soon and will bring my XT3 and sigma 18-50. That will cover me. Good video on a very relevant topic.
I remember people giving this lens "bad reviews" just because it is very heavy and no OIS for the price and also does not follow the fujifilm philosophy of "small apsc cameras and small lenses" at the time. while I agree is justfied back then. But fujifilm cameras now have IBIS and also have larger cameras now like the XH2,
I have this lens for a long time and almost on the verge of selling it but never did.
i used it on my xt-3 and even my xe4 (with a grip) and had no problems with it. I also own the sigma 18-50 and tamron 17-70 but I ended up selling those and still kept the 16-55.
It gives me pictures with "character" and always fun to use and built like a tank.
It is kinda funny that people now are raving the Viltrox 75 1.2 but that lens is heavier than the 16-55.
I also got it and it shares the same filter size! :)
2-4 primes and 2 cameras are much heavier in a bag than this lens, a backup lens and body in a bag. I always consider selling but then decide to keep it. It's a beast of a good lens. Never disappoints but never gets the respect it deserves. Great video on praising this keeper.
I’ll keep my 16-55 f2.8 any day! sure, it’s a little bit hefty, but it’s the perfect lens to carry when you don’t have anything else in mind.
I definitely love the 16-55 for event photography but generally prefer primes for everything else! I've never used the 16-55 for filming UA-cam so I may try that to get more use out of it.
I really like the f2.8 look for video, I feel like it's shallow without being too shallow!

Coincidentally I just bought a used copy of the Fuji 16-55 f/2.8 for my X-T5 and.. WOW. In the past I've owned (and with one exception, sold) nearly every "kit" Fuji lens dating back to the XC 16-50 OIS v1, but with this 16-55 I finally feel I've hit that holy grail of image quality, aperture, AF and focal length. Perhaps oddly, my backup lens in this regard -- mainly for snapshots and weight savings -- will likely remain the feather-light XC 16-50 OIS v2, which can be surprisingly decent when avoiding it's weak points (low light and/or the 50mm end). XC lenses tend to be sleepers in the Fuji line, but that's another story.
Agreed on all points.. Also a fan of XC “sleeper” lenses, especially for hiking
It's such a workhorse lens but I always hated it for photos outside of closer sports coverage yet those samples are gorgeous. Very hard to beat for video.
I've been a photographer for 20+ years. At one point I was carrying around a D700 with battery grip and Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 for concert photography for a total of 3.44kg of handheld weight. Not including tripod whenever I needed that. As much as your average bass guitar. So check your privelige, lol.
Ah: the 16-55! Still one of my favorite lenses! One of the few zooms that looks like a prime. And I like that it's extremely rugged. And 16mm being my favorite focal length, this lens has no equal. It was one of the reasons of why I switched to fuji :)

I really can't speak for the 16-55mm (I have not used it) but I get the weight/price/performance balancing act.
I tested the XF56mm (original) and the Sigma 56mm, I kept the Sigma, it was as good in my opinion (or 99% there) at less than half the price of the new Fuji 56mm WR, I love it for my portrait work
People seem to really like the little Sigma zoom - and from what I’ve seen in terms of lens ‘tests’ on YT, optically the Sigma seems just as good optically (sharpness mainly) as the Fujinon… but something you will only discover by using it yourself I suppose.
I have the 18-120mm zoom which is great for me but it stays in my studio and I never need to carry it anywhere. All about the right lens for the job ain’t it!

Love everything I hear about this lens and want to pick it up so bad. I wonder if you’d consider the Fuji 18-55mm for a lightweight kit. I’m on a Xh2s and combined it’s a great run’n gun build. May not be 2.8 all the way through but I just got mine for $400 like new, and very comparable image quality wise to the 16-55mm, from what I’ve seen in comparison videos
I love my 16-55 on my X-H2 and it is my only lens at the moment.
In my opinion, the 16-55 makes sense if you're purely going to only one location with a tripod. Let's say a sunset/sunrise location for travelling its primes. No brainer for me, the travelling with 2-3 primes.
I've always held off on the 16-55, but recently, I've become somewhat intrigued by it.
Its odd ive never owened a full frame 24-70 ..but its got me curious 😮...i tend to go 23,35, and 56mm ..thanks for video
I chose the Sigma 16-55 2.8 over this lens because the weight, I will probably switch in the future but for now I'm really happy with the results I get with the Sigma lens and paired with the X-Pro3 it's not heavy to carry around. also very small.
unfortunately it's not super sharp on the X-T5, but what makes it the best lens for me is it basically doesn't have any flaring or CA.
I shoot a lot of timelapses at sunrise/sunset and don't want the flares to ruin the shot, so it's pretty much my only option
so i have the Sigma 18-50 and the Tamron 17-70mm. I have never gone for the fuji 16-55 as the weight and price put me off, although i do have the fuji 18-135mm, which is my lazy lens for holidays. As a total amateur, i can say the sigma and Tamron are great, i use the sigma for everyday and the Tamron for Music events (opera or shows), for the reach, or if im using my backup xt30 (no.ibis). However, for my Xt5 or Xs10, i reach for the sigma every time, juat makes my life easier. I watched numerous videos before those purchases, and i have to say, both are great, and good alternatives to the fuji if you are an amateur like me. If the weather is terrible, then i use my 18-135mm, since like the 16-55mm its a bricket and i have faith it will survive, although i always sweat about the f3.5-5.6. Ps Hugh brownstone doesnt lie, he was convinced and that was good enough for me.
I finally jumped into mirrorless and switched to Fuji, got myself an X-H1. I have it in my head that this lens will be a fantastic fit for the IBIS-and-grip-having X-H1, if I can ever afford one, haha. I love having a comfortable grip on the X-H1 and despite the crazy weight of the 16-55, I am optimistic. Working out with those dumbbells in preparation :D My current only XF lens is the tiny, lightweight 23mm/f2, the 16-55 weighs three to four times that one. :D
I've shot Fuji since the X-T2 came out, and before that I shot Canon 1D Mark whatever...and maybe it's because carrying that around with a grip and a 70-200mm lens made me understand "heavy"...the 16-55mm is not heavy...it a superb lens in everyway to the sigma and a workhorse for any need that you have in video or taking images.
I had the Sigma...its rly tiny....but lacking aperture ring and Fuji Colors....I still was looking for a good 16-55 used...and went for it...and I must say...rly a whole different leaque....I also got the 23 LM and of course it is on level above, but since I got the 16-55 I only use it when I need the speed....also got me the 50-140 used, rly a gem....same quality as the 23 LM

I tried about 7 years to get something better, no chance ) Ithink it lives longer than me =) ive it on my xt 2/x-t3 to my new xh2 and i love it =) All the red bages on the 40 mp sensor are awesome ! Im with you =) Keep up your good work.
Looking back through the my Lightroom library some of the photos were taken back when I had an XT2! and thats right when this channel first kicked off 4 years ago! I never tried it on the XT5 when I had it! Really struggling to avoid picking up an XT5 in the future!

This is really a chunky lens :D I bought the tamron 17-70mm f2.8 instead. Cheaper and more range while mega sharp. I can really recommend. 👌

Love this lens but finally sold mine for the sigma 18-50 which is just as good but so much lighter. The sigma also is NOT optically inferior.
Makes me want to sell the 23 and 35mm and get this haha. Also, where can I get the portra preset you used in some of your pictures? Love the colours!

The only reason that I use primes for wide angle on my FF and MF3 cameras is the size and price

Prefer primes because of the way they feel and balance better on my X-E4 and X-E1. Even the XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 feels uncomfortably front heavy on the X-E4. I can’t imagine how bad the f2.8 constant would feel on the small bodies.
Use the 16-55 but it is heavy and only use on my XH2s because it is too big and heavy for my smaller Fuji bodies so I bought a Signa 18-50 for my XS20. Great option. Optically it is as good as the big boy
I need your opinion on some lenses that I'm taking on my upcoming trip. I've already decided on the 16-55 and the 50-140. This pretty much covers me. This trip will be a lot about creating content and making portraits. I want to bring one additional prime lens. Here's my choices. 23 1.4, 33 1.4, 50 1.0, 56 1.2, 90 f.2, also the Viltrox 27 1.2 and the 75 1.2. I'd love an opinion.
I have the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and it's an absolutely fantastic lens, it's incredibly sharp and if you look at the video from Three Blind Men and an Elephant they tested and found the Sigma 18-50mm can hold it's own against the red badge 16-55mm.
If you do get the lens in the future be sure to upgrade the firmware asap as it irons out a couple of launch bugs that can get annoying if you don't update right away.

Luca Petralia made a comparison between the Sigma 18-50, XF 16-55 and Tamron 17-70 and the XF 16-55 is clearly the best lens (esp. in terms of IQ). But for lightweight travel the Sigma can be an alternative for some people.
@@muttishelfer9122 the 18-50mm definitely trades blows with the 16-55mm, at 18mm it's been shown the Sigma is sharper though going into 50mm territory is where the 16-55mm takes it.
The 16-55mm is an excellent lens though with its size / weight and price it really makes the Sigma 18-50mm a bit of a no brainer for me personally, especially when you're getting 80% of the optical performance for less than 50% of the price in a much smaller package.
@@echo_waves9439 Very late to this, but Christopher Frost's review of the Sigma on the 40MP sensor showed great centre sharpness but godawful edges/corners at the wide end at all apertures - this is because it's relying on software to correct distortions rather than glass and engineering, which is where some of the money is being saved. Anyway, certainly not what you want if you're into landscapes. I've been weighing up all the standard zooms on Fuji and I'm not sold on any of them...
Have you zoomed the lens in and out in the rain? If so did you do anything like wipe it off or get it under cover first? I have an xf16-80 which is WR but am worried about zooming in the rain.
I try and avoid the rain tbh, my camera might be weather sealed but I’m not 😂 I hate getting wet.
I have done what you said! Zoom in the rain a bit! I do have a cloth in my bag that I used to wipe it down in bad weather. It’s been fine in my use! But I do try and avoid it

Credible review, Goughie. Don’t people like carrying around heavy things? Front loaded balance helps compose down-looking shots.😂 Ergonomics, versatility, optics - always a trade off. Why did red labels go away? Your dog?
Minor point .. reflection in framed photo (elk?) behind you a bit distracting. Perhaps lighting adjustments would solve it. Cheers!

I’ve noticed that reflection in my videos, I’m crammed down one end of a bedroom, not too much that can be done about it for the time being I don’t think
Size and weight should be the ‘prime’ objective for designing APSC lenses. At least zooms. Obviously with decent image quality, OIS and WR where possible… but size and weight first.
Im a landscape shooter and I have 8-16mm fuji 2.8...its a tank to carrry. Im curious what focal length do you set to for video ?
For the video at my desk? I’m in such a small area that I’m at 16mm on the 16-55
I have this camera lens combo and am still struggling to get the best out of it….I thought it would be an upgrade from my OMD solutions (ex Olympus) OM-1 and 12-100 lens…..unfortunately the ‘Olympus’ kit just slays the Fuji outfit for sharpness and things like dynamic range and noise only lags slightly behind…..
The Fuji xt-5 is a lovely handling camera, but all those megapixels seem to be a hindrance…. The 16-55 Fuji lens just doesn’t cut it for me and is quite a disappointment in my eyes, it lags a long way behind the prime lenses…I’ll persevere but I think Oly’ might win the day…..I’ll be keeping my xpro-2 though, ….. for now….🎉❤
Love the 16-55, but I prefer the 18-55 as a travel lens. It's less than half the weight and the image quality is still superb (at least in the copy I have). If I need a faster aperture, then I have the 1.4 and 1.2 primes.
Disagree the IQ is definitely noticeable
ive considered getting this as an upgrade to the kit 18-55 lens, as i’m sometimes disappointed with the optical quality there. however the lack of IS and weight put me off. is it worth it optically? i don’t mind the weight if it is.
other consideration is ideally i’d upgrade to a camera with IBIS if i had this…
I had the 18-55 on my X-T4 and current X-T5, but switched to the 16-55 and am very happy. The 18-55 almost felt 'buggy' as its focusing was unreliable (I tried all kinds of settings changes to fix it, but without total success). And the variable aperture made it less intuitive and more fiddly.
The 16-55 rarely leaves my camera now. I did need to make changes to my wrist strap to help my wrist take some of the weight when carrying it for hours in my hand during walks, but that now works great.

Yep, that’s pretty much the same reasons I’ve held off buying the 16-55 myself, as an upgrade to the 18-55 kit lens.
I just don’t get on with the kit lens - its sharpness is … ok I guess, and contrast too, but the bokeh is awful, and the unmarked aperture ring is annoying. But its size and weight are so hard to give up compared to the 16-55, which really is a chonker on my X-Pro3.
Interesting. I originally thought about the 16-55 but looking at the size and weight I’ll go with the 18-55 as I’ve seen quite a few video’s comparing the two and many have said the 18-55 is so good in comparison with the 16-55, especially factoring in weight, size and cost. I actually got an xc 15-60 with my Fuji x-t30 as it was a used bundle. Tbh it’s such a great, light lens. Really good image quality for a cheap lens but no aperture ring, hence the desire for the 18-55.
Interestingly, I’ve just gone back to the fuji 16-55 after using the sigma 28-50. The optical quality of the fuji is far better & the sigma has missed focus enough to be irritating. So will just have to put up with the weight then!
Hi! I'm just wondering if you've experienced problems with your copy. Recently I found my 16-55 changing aperture whenever I zoom beyond 16mm. For example, when I zoom in to 35mm, my aperture changes from 2.8 to 3.2. What do you think? Could it be electronic, or is it just a setting that I missed? Nice video!
Almost sounds like you're using the 18-55 and not the 16-55. Is that possible?

That 16-55 2.8 would be super nice, but I can't justify it when I have an 18-55 2.8-4 "kit lens". I'd go with that if I didn't already have the "kit lens" but even then it's almost double the price but not necessarily double the lens, except for size and weight.
I moved to fuji apsc as my primary system because I wanted the lighter lenses of apsc. So the 16-55 never interested me. The sigma 18-50 is my zoom of choice now
seems like im going to have to try this sigma out!
@@GoughieHey Goughie, just an update on the sigma 4 months later. Just for context I shoot a good amount of Motorsport and do use the 40fps on my XH2S pretty regularly.
The sigma cannot keep up. But all my other Fuji lenses with LM af all keep up just fine.
So maybe I will pick up a Fuji 16-55

firstly ı bought this lens with my xh2s but when ı am going to take real estate video or photo for commercial its not enough and when ı am using it with my djı rs3 mini its not working well. So ı bought viltrox 13mm f1.4 . its light and wide. I will sell my 16-55 and maybe upgrade my djı air 2s to air 3 :)
Why would you consider the Sigma 18-50f2.8 especially if weight saving is your goal when you could just use the Fujifilm XF18-55f2.8-4? Smaller, probably better than the Sigma and yes, you do lose a stop at the long end. I always put it in my camera bag when I am working because more than once it has been very useful. The results with XF18-55 are more than good enough for professional use. Just my two cents.
From a brand new perspective the Fuji 18-55mm is more expensive than the Sigma. That’s the main reason why! And I’d rather a constant aperture than the extra 5mm

For Sure, 18 to 55 lens is very versatile and good for parades and festivals where you don’t need a super zoom. Also I have the 16 to 80 lens and this too takes great quality shots but not seen many reviews in this lens

How big a percentage of your total carry weight would 300g make up, though?
Oooo interesting, I think volume might be the bigger annoyance but typical Fuji video

Total = 1990g
So I think that makes it 15% weight reduction

= 1315g
So I think that’s a 23% reduction
I don’t have the time or effort required to the do the volume calcs 😂
I guess my point was that in this scenario the “video camera” weighs 1315g and the camera you all see weighs 675g and that annoys me, anything I can do to make that smaller I’d appreciate, also because I use a shoulder bag and have my fair share of back problems 😂 it all helps!

Sigma told on their site, that 18-50 is weaterseald. I own Sigma insted of 16-55 and this lens is epic. Even with her macro abilities.

i have this and the 35mm f2, and i swear at 35mm the 16-55 is sharper lol
Great lens for sure. The Sigma is nowhere near the quality.
Le sigma 18-50 est bien meilleur pour 40Mpx. De plus, il est moins cher, et plus léger. Il faut dire Bye Bye à ce Fuji 16-55MM F2.8 !

I had this lens for a bit, and found that almost ANY prime lens was favorable for me ... with just a tad more effort. I'd much rather have the 23 or 35F2 along with something like the 56 1.2 or even the cheaper 50mm F2, and you save money. Better quality images IMO, brighter aperture, lighter weight, and it takes a few seconds to change lenes once you're comfortable with your gear. If you do prefer wider angle, then I'd suggest the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 paired with the 35F2 over this monstrosity. Primes have never become a 'trend' they just are better ... please stop talking nonsense
