it's very common in Indonesia to talk to a stranger just to show your polite gesture, especially in public places where you sit near each other for some time, such as restaurant, train station, hospital, etc. we called it "basa basi". some people start conversation with the question "where do you come from?" or "dari mana?". other foreigner may find it weird and annoying but it's our culture

But I don't understand even single word what Sunda people say, also Bali, Bugis and hundred of other languages spoken by local people throughout Indonesia. Fortunately we have Bahasa Indonesia as our National language so can communicate each other.

In Kalimantan, you can use malaysia language tone, the local will be understand, but if you can't, just try using Indonesian Language or English...
