Anybody would always have an awkward time when dining in a Padang restaurant for the first time. But here's the thing, when you go to any Padang restaurant you can just walk in and take a seat, without you're asking them they would then serve you with the many dishes there are in the counter (or if you want to make sure you can say "tolong dihidang"--[ 'toll-ong-dee-he-dung' ]--meaning "serve the dish please"). These dishes come in small plates just like you had here in the video. You don't have to savor them all though, just pick any dish to your liking (a la carte). Once you finish eating, the waiter will check the dish you picked and you'll pay accordingly. By the way, if they serve you the traditional way, the waiter will come with so many plates stacked in their arms. But to order, you can also approach the counter and ask the waiter to serve you rice with certain dish of your choice in one single plate--many locals do just that.
@@the.yellow.princessWell I would say that's the beauty of it, different country offers different cultures that opens up our soul and enriches our journey in life. Idk about the used plates thing being brought back to the counter, but I think those were the dishes left untouched by the customers when served a la carte. Thanks for sharing the video Melanie and have a nice stay in Indonesia. Can't wait for your next adventure!
In other Padang restaurants, such as Rumah Makan Padang Sederhana, you may get a very large portion on your table, don't be surprised and don't need to eat it all, because you will only pay for what you eat. The waiter only needs to count the remaining food on the table to know what you have eaten. Mel, you are traveling alone, be careful. If you are confused about the language, you may have to use Google Translate voice. Hope you have a pleasant day in Indonesia. Happy travelling, Mel.
go to bandung, only 40 minute by whoosh train..... mountain tangkuban perahu, hotspring kawah rengganis, kawah putih white crater, tea plantation south bandung, mall pvj, food batagor, bakso tahu, etc
Actually, if you buy it as take away, you can choose which food do you want. But since you eat it there, they always serves everything on the table. It's only happen in padang restaurant so you don't need to worry if you eat in warung or another restaurant and they serves some side dish. They won't charge any if you didn't eat the side dish. But make sure to ask if it's included as one with your ordered food. Sambal and other sauce is free. Google translate will communicate with them greatly. Don't be afraid if the grammar is wrong. As long as the key word is right, they will understand.
Hi beautiful, Locals are friendly to foreign tourists, But we still have to be careful wherever we are, Hopefully your trip in Indonesia can be the most beautiful experience of your life 🙂👍
the concept of nasi padang is you pay for what you ate, and the unique things are the food option already on your table.... usually a small plate contain 2 portion of side dish
Usually you just go sit, and they will serve you with bunch of dishes and they will calculate the price after you eat. But the rule is, if you take a little bit from a plate, it's already considered one serve, so might as well eat the whole plate....enjoy the culinary in Jakarta :)
You must go to west sumatra that originaly NASI PADANG. If you want try the best RENDANG at Restoran SELAMAT Padang city. There you find black beef rendang. And Nasi Kapau at bukittinggi city.
Wow, nasi padang is indeed delicious and appetising, I also love to eat nasi padang menu, thank you for sharing the adventure of eating journey in Indonesia. 👍👍
you were not supposed to eat them all, just the ones you fancy. good thing they didn't put so much on the table. usually they put 8-12 dishes. you just take the ones you favour and they will charge accordingly.
In a Padang restaurant, all dishes will be served on your table. Don't worry - you only pay for what you eat. For example, if you only want rendang, chili dishes, and vegetables, just eat those dishes. You won't be charged for the untouched dishes.
When the waiter ask you what you want, just answer: everything. Then your table is full of food and you are charged with what you eat. But vegetables is counted per plate. For instance, there are two pieces rendang in a plate, you pay one if you take only one piece.

That's actually what I usually get for my Nasi Padang 😂 Rice, rendang, perkedel, the veggies sauce and green chili. Lord I need to order them for dinner tonight. But yea, at Padang restaurant you can ask for it 'rames' style, aka similar to Nasi Campur where you ask for specific dish/es along with the rice - and they bring out just the one plate. So funny to see u randomly go in somewhere and literally didn't have a clue, so excited to see, So genuine. I think u should do a lot of similar content like this, so genuine unknown feeling, scared, intimidated, funny all mixing in genuine reaction.
No, the dishes aren't necessarily for 1 or 2 people. At some Nasi Padang restaurants, they serve multiple dishes to the table, and you only pay for what you actually eat. You can take as little as a slice of meat or a piece of potato. You don’t have to finish everything. When you're done, they’ll check what’s left on the plates and charge you accordingly.
This is true Padang food presentation. They will put all the food they sell on the table. If you are just 1 person, they will put just 1 or 2 pieces of serving in one plate. If you come in with your family, they will put more serving per plate. Please do only eat your preferred food, not all whatever they presented on the table. They will charge only the food that you touch in that plate, even unfinished. Padang restaurant etiquette is...do not to ever touch food you don't intent to eat, for hygienic reason. (some bigger restaurants now cling wrap those plates) If 1 serving is not enough, you can always ask for more. If you already make your choices, you can also ask the server to take back those untouched plates of food you don't like.
It's salty because it is supposed to be eaten with rice. The rice will tone everything down, and Padang food is designed around rice. Nasi Padang is directly translated as Rice from Padang. You might find rendang at any restaurant, but they just won't get anywhere close to the Padang people. I prefer the one from "pagi sore" restaurant though, although lately I love Kapau kampuang too. But you really can't beat rendang from Padang restaurant. Those people next to your table are eating with a couple of people. So, they served them "hidang style". That means, they put everything on those small plates in front of you, for everyone to pick and eat. Only those you touch are being counted. Some Padang restaurants wrap the plate with plastic for some kind like sealing. You pay for those that you open the wrap. If you love tasting food, you should pay attention to the origin in Indonesia. Unlike many countries, Indonesia has thousands of cultures, and we preserve them. So, like that rendang that you just ate, the dish is from Padang, and because the dish is from Padang, the best taste you'll get would also from Padang restaurant. There are other dishes from Makassar, Manado, Java, Betawi, Sunda, and so on. And just like rendang, the best taste would be at their respective culture's restaurant. I would recommend trying sup brenebon and cakalang from Manado, also gudeg and fried chicken from java, and soto Betawi, ujung pandang noodle from ujung pandang, babi guling from Bali, babi sei from Kupang.
Mix and use spoon to eat indonesian food or use with your hand. That the ways how indonesian people eat, so you can feel the taste of food and don't eat 1 by 1. Mix all together. Sometimes you can ask or see other people how to eat or use something. Watch and learn before you go somewhere. And ask if you don't know. So you can enjoy your trip more better everywhere you go. Sorry for my teks and thanks to visit Indonesia. Hope you can enjoy the trip. Happy trip for you. Good luck and always be careful
You can ask for one plate serving by ordering one dish like "nasi rendang", or "nasi ayam". They always serve many plates even if you are alone. But no pressure, you are free to choose things you like. They will only charge you the things you eat. It's normal for them to put over 20+ plates in front of you, again even if you are alone. Or, again, you can order one dish plate, or order take away (nasi bungkus). You choose from nasi "rendang", "ayam", "telur", and all available dishes like fried or grilled fish, tunjang, etc
Nasi Padang is the name for culinary delights in Padang restaurants, and Padang is the capital of West Sumatra province, but in the city of Padang, even in every place you will not find a restaurant called "Rumah Makan Padang", and if you want to taste the original taste of each menus at Padang restaurants, once in a while you must have to visit Padang and West Sumatra to taste and see firsthand the specific manufacturing process for each menu there and at the same time you can enjoy the natural beauty and various exotic cultures, I'm sure you will definitely be amazed to admire them. ...we are waiting for your arrival in the field..🙏
i think you don't have to finish it. that's why it comes in different plate. i went to Jakarta many2 years ago. there were much more plates on the table. we only charged the one that we take.
🌍🇮🇩 First of all: Welcome to Indonesia! Especially: Jakarta, our most populated and crowded city. Hope you can stand it ... 😅 Second: You have picked the right place to eat Beef Rendang. Rumah Makan (RM / Restaurant) "Surya" has a long-time good reputation for their Beef Rendang! 😊 Third: But you did your lunch incorrectly. 😬 For in various normal Minang (or Padang) restaurants, you directly go to any available table, sit, wait, and then the waiters would come and serve you many-many plates of so many various different dishes choices! Pick the ones you desire. Enjoy it. After that: you would only have to pay for the ones you eat. 😊 Now, since you entered the restaurant (the RM "Surya") and you went directly to the showcase, and pointing at some dishes - a pity - then OF COURSE they would served you ONLY those dishes! As a result: You obviously missed the opportunity to enjoy SO MANY other Minang-style different dishes! 😁 Fourth: Actually, NOT FAR from RM "Surya", about only 300 meters from RM "Surya", there lies: The extravaganza, magnificent "RM Bopet Mini"! THIS IS - nowadays - THE MORE FAMOUS Minang Restaurant than "RM Surya"! And - IMHO - seriously, honestly, they cook BETTER Minang food! It's many people's favorite Minang restaurant, nowadays! You REALLY really should try this one! 😃😃 The GPS Location is: maps.app.goo.gl/t34vskBAVp1eW9NH6 Note: In RM BOPET MINI, they DO NOT SERVE you plates. It is a Buffet style (that is why they call it "Bopet") restaurant. You will have to queue, and point out which dish you would like to have. And sit. And then the waiter will deliver it for you. 😊 Dishes you should try, there, I suggest: 👇🏽 Lontong Sayur Komplit. Plus with Beef Rendang! And Gulai Tunjang!!! And mixed vegetables! 👆🏽 Really, these dishes are AMAZING! Superb! My all time favorites, there, at the BOPET MINI! Believe me, RM Bopet Mini never fails to satisfy my appetite, and my friends'!! 😃
This "Surya" is one of the most famous padang resto. It located at Bendungan Hilir Jakarta. On your next visit please try sate and soto. I hope enjoy!❤
In Padang restaurant... the rule is that:... they will only count the bill based upon what you've eaten.. so there's no obligations that you have to eat all of those dishes Lol.. 😊😊 so.. if you decided to eat nasi (rice) with only the rendang beef.. than the bill will only count as rice and beef... and no need to eat all of the rendang beef ( you could only eat with just one piece of rendang beef.. and left out the others.. they will count your bill as rice and 1 piece of rendang beef, not two or three pieces )
@@the.yellow.princess no.. You'll never anxiety.. Will be fun.. I'm not joking.. You can try it someday.. Use hand is indonesian culture.. Except not soup or using water please don't use any hand lol

It really looks like its the first time you eat nasi Padang, Foreigners the 1st time they eat nasi Padang: use fork The 2nd time: use spoon The 100 times: use hands Like the 1000 times: use hands with their legs up in the chair

💛💛💛
i think you don't have to finish it. that's why it comes in different plate. i went to Jakarta many2 years ago. there were much more plates on the table. we only charged the one that we take.
Really? They charged me for everything
❤❤❤ beef rendang in surya restauran the best in jakarta area❤❤❤
You are unique l do like it😊, btw don't listen random people follow your heart ❤️
@@masbawang7361 best advice thank you! 🙏💛💫✨
🌍🇮🇩 First of all: Welcome to Indonesia! Especially: Jakarta, our most populated and crowded city. Hope you can stand it ... 😅
Second:
You have picked the right place to eat Beef Rendang. Rumah Makan (RM / Restaurant) "Surya" has a long-time good reputation for their Beef Rendang! 😊
Third:
But you did your lunch incorrectly. 😬
For in various normal Minang (or Padang) restaurants, you directly go to any available table, sit, wait, and then the waiters would come and serve you many-many plates of so many various different dishes choices!
Pick the ones you desire. Enjoy it.
After that: you would only have to pay for the ones you eat. 😊
Now, since you entered the restaurant (the RM "Surya") and you went directly to the showcase, and pointing at some dishes - a pity - then OF COURSE they would served you ONLY those dishes!
As a result: You obviously missed the opportunity to enjoy SO MANY other Minang-style different dishes! 😁
Fourth:
Actually, NOT FAR from RM "Surya", about only 300 meters from RM "Surya", there lies:
The extravaganza, magnificent "RM Bopet Mini"!
The GPS Location is:
maps.app.goo.gl/t34vskBAVp1eW9NH6
Note:
In RM BOPET MINI, they DO NOT SERVE you plates.
It is a Buffet style (that is why they call it "Bopet") restaurant.
You will have to queue, and point out which dish you would like to have. And sit. And then the waiter will deliver it for you. 😊
Dishes you should try, there, I suggest:
👇🏽
Lontong Sayur Komplit.
Plus with Beef Rendang!
And Gulai Tunjang!!!
And mixed vegetables!
👆🏽
Really, these dishes are AMAZING!
💛
My mouth feel hungry after saw you eat nasi Padang ITS my fav dish
💛
In Padang restaurant... the rule is that:... they will only count the bill based upon what you've eaten.. so there's no obligations that you have to eat all of those dishes Lol.. 😊😊 so.. if you decided to eat nasi (rice) with only the rendang beef.. than the bill will only count as rice and beef... and no need to eat all of the rendang beef ( you could only eat with just one piece of rendang beef.. and left out the others.. they will count your bill as rice and 1 piece of rendang beef, not two or three pieces )
😅
Welcome to jakarta

the best nasi padang in jakarta is SURYA restauran in Benhil jakarta❤❤❤
If that's the portion, it can be for 2 or 3 people. If you want to say it, but using Indonesian, saya mau satu nasi rendang komplit
😅😅😅
😂kamu tidak harus menghabiskan makanan semua yg dihidangkan dlm piring itu ❤
It really looks like its the first time you eat nasi Padang, Foreigners the 1st time they eat nasi Padang: use fork
The 2nd time: use spoon
The 100 times: use hands
