    In Indonesia, racism still exists, sometimes a small form of racism is implied or hidden in a joke when we banter between friends. Our nation is not a perfect nation, but we hope we can continue to uphold our country's slogan "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" which means "unity in diversity" because we have various races.
    Thanks for the video

      Racism is basically an act of discrimination against a race. if you mean to describe the characteristics of a certain race, it is only limited to a joke, it is not an act of racism because there is no element of discrimination there. don't get me wrong in interpreting racism so that new sensitivities emerge.

      Many black people who are not angry are called "black-man" in Indonesia because they understand that it is not a element of discrimination, it's the same when we call white people "bule". in Indonesia, all of these calls do not contain elements of discrimination, they are only limited to calls to describe the characteristics of a race. Don't equate it with the US when calling the N-word, automatically it is an act of discrimination because there is a bad history of discrimination behind the call.

      Racist jokes do exist in Indonesia. I'm Indian-Chinese born and raised in Indonesia. My friends always joke about Indian and Chinese people (stereotypes) and I also joke back about Javanese and Sundanese stereotypes. No one ever has hard feelings about it because we know those were jokes and we truly respect each other. In my experience, people who call on others racist have hatreds buried deep in their hearts just as much as a true racist do.

    Racism and discrimination stem from disparity and injustice. Even in Indonesia, where there are disparities in areas such as education and healthcare, the habit of showing respect and kindness towards others has helped to unite the diverse population. The moral values held by Indonesians have played a key role in fostering a sense of togetherness. 🥰🥰

      @hikashia.halfiah3582 Рік тому +69

      This, racism and discrimination are probably symptoms of deeper problems of the society, usually inequality, disparity, injustices, etc. Indonesia is not exactly free of racism either (especially worse during pre-reformation), but our cultural value and national historical root has make the Indonesia that's fairly tolerant you see nowadays; even with the same inequality, disparity, and injustice problems.
      Doesn't mean we should be lulled to this false sense of security though, eventually if the deeper problems persists, especially social inequality is not handled well, we will be well on express train to ethno-religious-social conflicts, maybe even way worse than the US now.

      A lot of Indonesians have black/brown friends and guess what their nicknames are? Blacky, Keling, Ambon, and the list go on. Most of Indonesians respect other people in front of 'that people', once you're out of sight you might be the main topic of their convo. About moral value, oh idk where to start about this, try being gay or apostate, you will see what kind of moral value they hold on to.

    8:30 Asia-Afrika Street is named after Konferensi Asia-Afrika (Afro-Asian Conference) in 1955. It sparked the independent movement across Africa. Even one of the country which had the representation in the conference did not even had a flag yet, and the committee created it. Nelson Mandela often mentioned the importance of Afro-Asian Conference for the African countries. Yet, it is way underrated since it is not the western favor. On the contrary, it shows the real face of the West in the history.

    We have had problems with racism, in the period between 1998-2004ish there were many riots caused by ethnic/religious strife. But we are still united as a nation and learning to develop a cohesive national identity. There are still incidents of racism nowadays but not as massive, those incidents are small and still controllable.
    We are a country which had been independent for less than 100 years, before that we were many ethnicities and kingdoms with no unity between them. We still have a long way to go but we believe we will become more unified in the future.

    Hi bro.. What happened bro? As Indonesian, I feel weird while read the title of your video.. This country doesn't recognize differences in ethnicity bro, I mean we tolerate each other in our country... just think we all are equal, respect each other's differences.. In Indonesia there are more than 300 ethnic groups, and we still consider all of them as brothers. .. If you have travel around at least 3 different big islands in Indonesia, you will feel a different atmosphere and culture.. I have been to several different islands, such as Sumatra, Java, Madura, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores. Everything will feel like traveling to several countries, only for us as Indonesian to communicate in many regions in Indonesia there is no language barrier because there is a unified language as the national language, namely Bahasa Indonesia because it is impossible to communicate for every province who have a different language. And here there are 1300+ regional languages. Don't blame your country too bro.. and there must be strong and charismatic leadership to dig back a sense of brotherhood as a nation. Just start to spread kindness and mutual respect there will definitely be no racism, because racist actions are a manifestation of a feeling of being superior to other people who have no tolerance and have no feeling that we are all equal as humans.. Understanding each other feels Excellence itself causes division, conflict and war. Look at Indonesia like hundreds countries in a country but we can unite with our national motto "Binneka Tunggal Ika" which means "Unity in Diversity".. Enjoy learning many things from Indonesia bro and enjoy your journey too..By the way, you have excelent video editing, bro 👍. God Bless..🙏

    oh believe me, we have internalized racism here. difference is people think it’s simply a ‘joke’ and nothing wrong with it. my family refers to a papuan boy ‘si item’ or ‘the black’, and they always comment about his ‘ugly’ skin. but somehow, they continue to give food and let him play around with my nephew. they really think it’s fine and they don’t hate him per se, it’s a little confusing for me.

    I can confirm, we are somewhat racist towards Chinese or in our language Tionhoa people. But we do use either your skin color or your body physique (Either skinny or fat) for joking between ourselves. (Example: Like you and me talking like we are friends and I say "So with your skin color does it make you harder to spot at night?" like that, we often use little racism but it is for fun and you can ask the same thing but don't take it too far.)

    I think exposure from an early childhood to all sprts of different cultures and races and learning to debunk the stigmas and stereotypes surrounding those cultures are important, but it's also not a one and done thing. I am Indonesian and from early childhood I grew up with all sorts of cultures and races, I'm chinese-indonesian myself but most of my friends aren't lol. What I kind of find funny is sometimes the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding different cultures kind of arise or get stronger in some people as they grow up even when they encounter all sorts of people on their daily lives
