Retired LEO and I always carry! Wife has her CHL and carries as well. I'm all for everyone who is mentally stable and properly trained to carry. All 4 of my kids have been raised around, taught to respect and learned to treat every gun as if it's loaded. Who determines who’s mentally stable? If I hate you or you offend me I can call up law inforcement and thanks to red flag laws, with arbitrary means of measuring instability, and no due process, now you have no gun and it’s a huge hassle to clear your name. Sorry to go off like a mentally unstable person 😆but that criteria pisses me off. Trump and Biden are both clearly on record supporting red flag laws.

When my first wife and I were dating, she cried the first time she saw my guns. But she decided if she had to live with them when we got married she needed to make friends with them. I took her to an indoor range to shoot and gave her some of the basics. I then enrolled her in a basic firearms class that was offered by that range. She came home from the class feeling EMPOWERED (and shooting more accurately than me!) The state I live in no longer requires a permit to carry concealed or open though the permit is still available (for reciprocity purposes). I have mixed feelings on "permitless carry". I don't think you should have to have a permit to exercise a constitutional right, BUT, with no permit requirement there really is no incentive to get the proper training (most people won't unless it is absolutely required unfortunately). The most important part of training is the legalities of when using the firearm is genuinely self defense and when it is not. Marksmanship is also important. A firearm is useless unless you know when it is appropriate to use it and it's useless if you can't hit your target. It's also useless in the hands of someone who is not comfortable handling and firing it.

I have been carrying daily for most of my adult life and have actually been in a situation where I had to use my firearm to defend myself from a man who stabbed me during an attempted robbery. He gave me no warning or option to comply.
It is a sad fact that there is currently no way for the average citizen to legally carry a firearm in all 50 states, even in an RV. Be aware of the laws in each state and, if there is a chance that you will be in violation, AVOID THAT STATE!
*If you don't feel comfortable using a firearm, don't. Take measures to get yourself comfortable or avoid them altogether.
*If you choose to carry, only carry on your person. Never in a purse, bag or fanny pack.
*Never show someone your firearm until you are ready to shoot them.
*If you must shoot someone, keep shooting them until they run away or stop moving altogether.

There is a TV showed titled "I Survived". About half of the stories are about women and men who get assaulted or abducted. It’s highly unlikely they ever need to use it but I’ve spent all my childhood in and out of baby jail and it continued into my mid twenties, So drawing off that experience and now my ten years driving all over the country for a living I think the majority of people are good people even the ones we briefly encounter and seem like total jerks . But I’ve met and sometimes even celled with people that don’t have any empathy and are just wired in a way that they don’t see hurting someone for something they want being wrong. There are many young women and senior women traveling alone, having a fire arm could save your life. Yes it's important to have several modes of protection. But knowing firing a gun at a perpetrator will do what bear spray can not! Stop them dead in their tracks! Another thing having an emergency locator if you go to any remote area with no phone signal. Very important!

Former Deputy (17 years) before that I managed a high end Gun Dept., even as a Deputy I had a FFL for eight years. I am in agreement with Mercedes....not everyone should own or are capable of owning a firearm. Mercedes hits a home run again with "reciprocity" with States honoring each other's Firearm & Carry privileges.John made me chuckle about scoping out your area.....in a restaurant to this day I still have to sit with a wall behind me LOL. John when going through Illinois your firearm can not be in reach.
    Suggestions:
When handgun shopping.......go revolver: at 2AM half asleep, no safety to fumble with, unlike a semi auto pistol a revolver will not jam. Stay reasonable in size: a .357 will go through several neighboring trailers before stopping. Buy the handgun that best fits your hand.....benefit of a revolver. There is actually a .38 Lady Smith for women, small grip.
The best security gun for trailer parks is a .410 shotgun: you won't "probably" kill your neighbor with a round going through 3 or 4 trailer walls. PLUS the "racking sound" will deter most criminal types.
Besides learning how to use it: practice, practice, practice!
Next get a "umbrella" insurance policy. "Ole John Criminal" who probably didn't do a good thing in his life will turn into "Saint John" by his family who will try to sue you. My policy is One Million Dollars for $180.00 annually.
REMEMBER: you aim to kill, not to incapacitate.
FOR those going to Alaska: Don't even begin to try to cross through Canada with a firearm. It will be seized at the border, possibly along with your vehicle, can end in arrest.
Google how to ship your firearms to yourself in Alaska.
Mercedes & John....great video! Love you guys, stay safe, God Bless!!

Some good points but I totally disagree on the "racking sound". It may deter "most" criminals but if that criminal is one who is prepared, racking that shotgun will likely be the last thing you ever do as it will take up valuable time. ALWAYS keep one in the pipe! Also, never say you aimed to kill as that could seriously go against you in the courtroom. You fired to stop the threat.

    • @richardkoch8752
      @richardkoch8752 3 роки тому +3

      @@drewpodnar4784 Good discussion.
The reason I said "you aim to kill, not to incapacitate" is that there are some who think you can shoot them in the arm or shoot the gun out of their hands to stop them. If you're not able to shoot to kill don't carry.
Any Officer will tell you the same thing. Three center mass. It's amazing how many rounds it can take to put someone down for good. One of my co-Officers was actually a FBI Sniper Instructor. They trained with their rifle which part of the head to aim for.
As far as not "racking a shell" a split second is all it takes to rack a shell. If time was that big of a factor and they're already prepared, they would have you before you can bring a long gun up to aim. Not having a shell in the chamber could be a safety factor for homes with children, plus it could also possibly keep you from being a victim by your own gun.

Your comment "go revolver: at 2AM half asleep, no safety to fumble with" really concerns me. How can a person justify aiming a weapon at another person if they themselves are half asleep? It could be your neighbour, your child or another innocent person and you would have trouble discerning when you are half asleep.

@@richardkoch8752 All good points, especially aiming for center of mass rather than to incapacitate. I would suggest terminology more in the line of "shoot to eliminate the threat" rather than "shoot to kill" It's the same physical action, but the mindset of stopping the threat vs. killing a person could be the difference between serving years or walking free in the aftermath. Just ask Kyle Rittenhouse!

Just walked out and told my now husband then boyfriend to enjoy himself. Never been inside a building shooting. Was always a farm. Will never go back to an indoor shooting range.

Non Restricted firearms (Rifle, Shotgun) can be driven from coast to coast as long as its stored properly.
Restricted firearms ( Ar's, Pistols) Require an Authorization to transport from the GOV't before it can leave your house. Plus it can only be used at a Range. No one but police carry in Canada
So great on one side, Camping and travelling Canada wide anywhere hassle free while carrying in you car, boat, camper whatever.

John is a hoot! Mercedes is your rock John. State to state the laws change if you are carrying or holding a firearm weapon, and live rounds. You really have to check out every travel route you take. This is beyond having the lockup of a weapon. State to state rules are so conflicting. I think weapons should be locked down, regardless of a concealed carry permit! And I agree with John that you should have the right to protect yourself with a weapon. I have not fired mine in over 50 years! But I believe we need to have those weapons locked and checked in our home or RV. And I agree with John to carry insurance to legally carry a weapon throughout your travels. Be safe my friends.

Each state has a reciprocate with other states. USCCA has a great map of reciprocating states and what's allowed. If you your LTC/ CHL license on your home state, then this map will tell you what states you'll be allowed to carry in and which states have restrictions as well as which states require you to notify a police officer in the event of a traffic stop. Regardless, everyone who carries should be well versed, trained, and be
comfortable about having a firearm in their possession.

That coupled with politically motivated prosecuting district attorneys, confused juries and even Judges uneven handling of pre-trial and jury instructions can make the outcome of a trial questionable. And it goes on - consider the competency of your legal counsel (and motivation based on fee structure), what third-party witnesses thought they saw and their biases, your character, what we say at the scene of the crime when giving LEO our statement, losing defensive rights based on weapon used, licensing, etc.

One thing a lot of people do NOT know is that in many states a bludgeon is more illegal than a firearm or blade ( knives ). A baseball bat, brass knuckles, black jack, and the like can be illegal to have in your possession, if it appears to be used as a weapon. And don't forget that those weapons require close contact. Something like 35 years ago, the city of Kennesaw, Ga. passed an ordinance that every homeowner must possess a firearm. Overnight their crime rate dropped drastically. I do not recall the numbers. And the law stands today. Great video, more people DO need to talk about this. I am a proponent that everyone should be trained by a professional as they do it all the time and are less likely to miss some nuance that the new shooter is doing wrong. Everyone can easily fall into some bad practices, so matter how experienced you are, let the pros train newbies.

Guns are a large part of the reason I’m looking to get a camper. My son shoots for a Scholastic Clay Target Program (shotgun) team. He also competes in other leagues and the places where these comps are held are often rural areas with nearby (or even at the venue) campgrounds. Camping there is better than finding an AirBNB or whatever 20 miles away. So, gun storage is one of the criteria I judge campers by. Walk in pantry? Nice place for a gun safe! Large closet? Same thing! I do carry a handgun of course, have my Michigan CPL (lots of reciprocity) and securing that is a concern as well. I agree that if you can carry you should carry. Having competition guns and lots of ammo for comps is another reason to carry… it’s expensive equipment! My son’s competition gun, bought used, still cost more than my first five cars combined! And ammo… it’s very expensive and hard to find these days! It is a crime target, all the more reason to be prepared just in case. Great video!

    • @ConservatEV
      @ConservatEV 3 роки тому

@@KennethLongcrier Depends on the type of shot. Buckshot can actually penetrate walls better than 5.56 rifle rounds in some cases!
It’s all due to physics. Dense spheres tend to lose little kinetic energy passing through walls, while 5.56 rounds tend to start tumbling as soon as they hit anything, sapping a lot of their kinetic energy. Spheres can’t tumble like that unless deformed. I wouldn’t want to be hit by either on the other side of a thin RV wall but the buckshot could be worse in this regard. Ballistic gel tests have shown this to be possible.
The moral of the story is be VERY careful what is behind your target even (perhaps especially) when using a shotgun. Over-penetration is always a possibility.

    A few observations:
If you have kids, they are capable of going to the range to shoot and see the destructive power of guns at around the age of six. (start with .22LR and use double ear protection for them - foam plugs, plus muffs) - This will let them learn that they are a tool, much like your skill-saw, or your drill, and can kill or hurt someone if they are used incorrectly. (When they are not familiar with them, is when kids are more likely to be hurt - kids are naturally curious.)
As for stashing guns in various locations, that can be a recipe for disaster. (for several reasons) - A better plan could be to keep all the firearms locked up except the one you have on your person. (which stays within arms reach if you are not dressed or in bed)
That is right - you should keep one on your person when inside your home, as well as when you go out. There are MANY home invasions every year. A home can be hardened to make it a little harder to gain entry. Most RV's can be breached with a simple screwdriver within seconds. You likely will not have time to retrieve a firearm once a break-in begins.
I agree with the sentiment to be sure you are staying within the laws, and also to get training. One other thing that should be done, is to establish your mindset in advance...That is, decide before you get a gun, under what circumstances you are mentally and emotionally prepared to use it. - Most parents would use one instinctively to protect their children or spouse. However, would you use one if someone were stealing your BBQ grill outside your RV, or was stealing your car from the driveway?
As I got older (and wiser?), I decided that I would not use one to protect my common possessions...I think a persons life is worth way more than a $400 lawnmower they are stealing from my garage. - For me, it boils down to my home....Anyone that breaches my walls that is not invited will find out what gun I have on my person, and what training level I have with it. When outside my home, it really boils down to protection of my family, then myself, then others around me if I can help without jeopardizing the my family.
Last thing, I also have a permit, even though my state just approved permit-less carry. (The permit is so I can carry in the other states that recognize it) As for travel, I only go to states (or through states) that allow the population to defend themselves. States like California, New York, etc that restricts firearms have nothing that I have to see in person....I will be content to visit those states virtually. (Not because I am scared to go there, but because I refuse to spend any of my dollars in these freedom restricting states.)
Evil walks among us every day.....You must ALWAYS be prepared to defend your loved ones. A lot of folks do not carry at home, and think they will have time to run grab a gun if someone breaks in....
Wolves travel in packs. Imagine your mental anguish if you are at home (or in your RV, etc) unarmed and unprepared, and the wolves breach your door before you can get to your firearm...They rape your wife in front of you and slice her throat and then rape that, they pour Drano down your kids throat for kicks, and make you watch as their life begins to fade away painfully, then they pistol whip you and leave you knocked out, to let you live with those memories. (all for a lousy $350 worth of stolen items) ...This is not fiction - I know the poor soul that had this very thing happen to them. If he had a gun on his person, it may not have prevented this savagery, but then again, it just might have.
His wife did not like guns, and would not LET him keep one at home. (Men, your #1 job is to protect and provide for your family. It has been this way since the start of time. Do not let your wife forbid you to fulfill your #1 job)
    - I want at least the CHANCE to change the outcome of something like the above.
Always be ready and have the means to say "Not my family, Not Me, Not Today"

I agree. I was raised shooting from an early age, and my old man was STRICT on safety! We went back east from Oregon, to Wisconsin for a family reunion staying at my grandpa's house. They put me and my cousin in my uncles old bedroom he would use to come home and go hunting. My cousin was a city boy from Chicago that knew nothing about firearms. He started rummaging through drawers snooping. I told him it wasn't his stuff, and to stop it. He then opened the closet and said "Check this out!" pulling out a 12 gauge pump shotgun. I was sitting on the bed and told him he should leave it alone. He cycled the action, spun around toward me, leveled it at my chest, and pulled the trigger! I lost my shit! We ended up outside, where I ended up with him on the ground and me on top going "Christmas Story" on his face!(see the movie) When I told my dad what happened he agreed he deserved a beating, and I did not get in trouble. What was scary was that my uncle told me he usually stored it with shells in the tube. I must have had an angel looking out that day.

My wife used to be terrified of guns and now she has concealed carry. Having backup is a good thing!

John, I think we need to be consistent in our beliefs which means it's my choice whether I want to own a firearm or not. I have no problem with people choosing either way. As a side note some woman in Philly pulled a gun on the cashier in Chipolte the other day because she could not get her order but Philly being what it is she still hasn't been caught.

I was at an RC flyin a couple weekends ago and I carry. Since I am CCW I have to keep it concealed, but since I was on private property I first asked the proprietors of the flyin if they had any issues, and their response was they feel much safer with a licensed and trained armed person than not, so I was allowed to take my cover shirt off and carry with it exposed. Not one person objected to it, in fact a few brought up conversations about firearms and shooting. I believe the majority of people do feel safer if they are with someone who is licensed and trained today.
Mercedes is right, some people just don't have the confidence to carry, and the Intestinal Fortitude needed to pull the trigger in defense. For them a non lethal device is better suited. This was actually a very well stated subject, and glad you did it even though you didn't want to.
On the flip side, those who are braggerts and are allowed to open carry in some states, and walk around with their big guns exposed can make some people leery about being around them. When I carry, only the grip is exposed, and being an LC9s, there isn't very much of it to expose, so it is easy to conceal.

As a founding member of the ODD SQUAD, I am hoping that you will hold a Newbie Week sometime, maybe next Spring when we can come out, practice parking, find out more about the best gadgets and must-haves for our Newbie RV's, which I most likely will have by then, and how about getting a local HUNTER"S SAFETY COURSE instructor out to introduce those interested to firearms? I took the Missouri course with my kids many years ago and we didn't shoot as part of the course, but I kept the book. The information is good for everybody, whether you decide to carry or not. My sister carries a BYRNA, I would also be interested in knowing more about that as an option, maybe that would be an option for some people.
Anyway, Mercedes and John, if you line up a NEWBIE week, I will sign up for the whole week, participate, AND help out however I can!

I was considering a trip up to the New England states to see the fall colors.
Then I had a thought, I'd have to leave my weapon at home instead of risking
being arrested and jailed for simply having it in my possession. NJ, NY, CT, RI
MA, VT, have some of the most outrageous laws for simple possession

You should never post things on the internet that you know nothing about. Vermont has constitutional carry for all residents and visitors as long as they are adults. You can open carry or conceal carry without a license. Many of thestates that you mentioned have very liberal gun laws.

Vermont? Last i knew Vermont was constitutional carry. What are the laws that are so bad in VT in regards to possession?
Being from MA we have some of the worst laws ever.... the states to my north are a lot better.

Any person 16 or older (although federal law requires the age to be 18) who can legally possess a firearm is allowed to carry openly or concealed. There is no distinction between resident or non-resident, both are allowed to carry without a permit in Vermont. Therefore, the state does not issue permits.

Excellent talk on a very touchy subject. I am a very staunch 2A supporter but I also agree that ANYONE who possesses a firearm should be trained.....trained....trained!
I am also a strong supporter of "less than lethal" forms of defense. There are several very good pepper gas launchers (Life Lite, Byrna, etc.) available out there and in most cases they don't require any license to carry. Electric stun guns are also very effective but they are 'in close' defensive weapons where the gas launchers work up to 60 feet.
In any event, stay safe out there.

I am a senior citizen from Arizona, an open carry state. I carry and always have, have my concealed carry, and have NEVER camped without at least one firearm. Never needed it except for rattlesnakes and a rabid fox, but I am a firm believer in having one. I do agree you need training, need range time, AND if you are not comfortable carrying one, DO NOT carry. Worse thing you can do is misuse it, have it taken away from you, or worse, injure someone accidentally.
Most of those I camp with carry. We don’t carry openly in an established campground, but carry open if remote boondocking

best, Best, BEST! For God-fearing Christians who believe their Lord has a plan for them, John and Mercedes are ironically and hypocritically sooooo so fearful... as if they don't really "trust in the Lord" and that the Lord will have their back. That's one of the problems with belief and faith: you can tout it, preach it, override it or forget it however, whenever you like. They will smile and cheer "God rules!", but their actions and talk reveal their true feeling that ""Fear rules!" The irony that they're oblivious to is that promoting guns in more hands increases their probability of being a victim of gun violence... hahaha... increasing their justification for owning and carrying guns. Onward Christian SOLDIERS, indeed!
Sorry for the tirade on your kind comment. German Shepherds are the BEST! It's just that the hypocrisy of Bible-quoting-toting, God-has-a-plan-for-us Christians drives me NUTS!, and it's why this country is the laughingstock of the world.

Your RV is a Home, you have every right to defend that home regardless of the State your visiting. There are local laws, and there are Constitutional Rights, get to memorize them (Your Rights) and understand the difference between a Police Officer and a Sheriff's Deputy.
Regarding the firearm you choose for your primary defense weapon, keep in mind the ammunition you use and know it's ability to penetrate walls, once that projectile penetrates your walls and keeps on going, the odds are now against you. Shotgun slugs and buck shot will punch through almost anything, Use "Frangible" ammunition within the confines of your RV.

Hi guys, I love love love you for doing this video.....I am a retired LEO I am still very proactive, I am a tactical hand gunner and used to teach those classes, I worked with TRU which is a (Tactical Response Unit) I am 70years of age and am a died in the wool sheep dog....great points were made by both of you on this video most people are afraid of the BANG when the gun goes off that seems to be their biggest fear.....most gun battles will happen within ten to four feet of you if you have to deploy your weapon.....hand guns are used to fight you way to your long gun.......one of the things they taught us in the academy was the phrase " My life was in eminent danger" !! This is a phrase you need to use if you are asked by any LEO why did you use your weapon? If you choose to carry a weapon you need to be resigned to the fact that you may have to use it and not to threaten or to wound someone ......so you need to discuss this with your family, priest, or your supreme being before making this decision, it is a heavy burden that you will have to carry if you decide to be an armed citizen......and you are right practice practice practice......I also have multiple hand guns shot guns and long rifles.... and I stay proficient with all of them. When we are in the RV I am only a few steps away from something for protection....I carry LE rounds in my shot gun as well as LE slugs nothing says get the heck out of here than racking a round in your shot gun if someones at your door of the RV and you suspect they are there to do you harm....I worked almost twenty years with Sheriff Joe Arpio in Arizona as an MCSO deputy, three years with Glendale PD doing various things even EOD five years in DC/ VA area as a contractor for DoD then three years reserve in a small Kansas town on the Oklahoma/Kansas border.....I can still shoot almost perfect scores on the range I am currently a member of a group called ZERT which are all retired LEO and Military along with civilians so once a month training on the range as well as medical training and comms training I have a Ham license as well as a GMRS license its all great fun with a purpose......Please more videos about this subject I started out training my daughter at a young age on gun safety etc..... she is now working with Homeland Security and thinks she can shoot better than her old dad LOL any way stay safe, more videos and God Bless you both.........Dave

Such an important topic! If you're going to carry...
    - Do so legally
    - Keep your firearms out of little hands
    - Get trained and stay that way
    - Research the rules and regs for every state you'll travel
    - Understand "reciprocity" is only the beginning, there are many nuances ("duty to inform", mag capacity, etc)
    - Seriously consider carry "insurance"
    - Have the ability to properly store firearms and ammo for every state
Thanks for all you do and stay safe. 🙏
