I was so happy to leave Pat and Debbie Boone behind in the 70s but now I will forever hear them each time I play or hear drum fills, thank you for that lol.

Pat Boone was a singer in the 1950s. Debbie Boone was his daughter who had a hit record in the 1970s.

That snare sounds just like Chad Smith's snare. It's just so.. crisp, and sounds absolutely fucking awesome.

Thanks Joe. Probably the most valuable information out there. These are classic fills that sound great, and will actually be used by a working drummer on a regular basis. They are exactly what’s called for in their musical context.

Great vid. These are the fills that land gigs for drummers. Easy, musical, and very clean. I've gotta go back and listen to that tune again. Lots of great usable fills.

I love the drums in this song. I love the style as well. I have been using it to get that double hit on the bass fluid along with the 8th notes being consistent. I have been improvising the fills to be honest, along the theme. After a few months I am glad to say I am now quite proficient at the double and even double double bass hits, but it is fantastic to find your video showing me the fills. And that 3 bass drum part is very interesting! I'll admit I never picked that up.
I play it by ear, but to see the technique broken down is brilliant. Thanks.

Absolutely useful fills. As you said, it is important to have a bag of breaks and fills in order to survive in any musical situation: jams, song writing process, improvising...

    Joe--you must LOVE Paul Weller.
Especially his music in the '90s.
    His drummer was SO soulful.
Some of the most tasteful drumming I've heard in pop/soul music.
    Just brilliant!

It's a Gretsch. 14 x 5 (I think). Evans power centre reverse dot head on the top and a hazy Evans 300 snare side on the bottom. Both cranked pretty high. I think it was an anniversary model or something. It was a gift.

Great fill ideas ! The ultimate 'soul' fill, for me, is still the Earl Young thing he played on all the classic Delfonics / Stylistics records. I call it the "Pak Paka Dum" fill ahah ! The simplest thing really, but if you really lay it down with that laid back feel, its just "that" sound.

Pat Boone and Debby Boone..."I don't know who they are". HA! Now I feel old. Pat was a HUGE American star in the 50s and 60s and even outsold Elvis Presley at the time. Had his own TV show as well. Debby is his daughter who was also pretty big in the 70-80s and had one big hit, You Light Up My Life. I enjoy your videos Joe!
