Reg Park was that dude for real. Strong as hell too. In my opinion hes got the type of body a true man would want. Hes not a pretty boy hes just old school rugged and rough. He wasnt just into big arms and shit like we see nowadays he stuck to the basics and worked on big power moves.. he knew that the arms were secondary. Definitely one of my favorites of all time. His whole philosophy on lifting weights was amazing IMO. He was huge.. but realistic and actually physically fit
de marques "Hes not a pretty boy hes just old school rugged and rough." Fun fact: Steve Reeves was the more popular Hercules, but Arnold favored Reg Park because he saw Park as tougher.
We all know that Big Lenny was the one who inspired Arnold. The lines, balance and aesthetics of Lenny is unmatched. 700lbs ripped with a 25 inch waist. Truly the personificaition of the golden era look. The Tom Platz of abs.
You mean 700 lbs with a 250inch waist. His transversus abdominis is so well developed he could dwarf an elephant which is pregnant with 30 babies. Not to mention he has 225lbs of intestines
Nick, much thanks for this video. Reg Park was truly the greatest natural bodybuilder ever; he was also extremely strong. He was the 1st bodybuilder to bench press 500lbs. At the 1970 mr.universe he lost to Arnold who was admittedly on steroids and 20 years younger than Reg by just 1/2 point. Most importantly Reg Park set the perfect example for all of us natural bodybuilders of what is truly possible. Reg stood 6'1" at competition weight of 220lbs. Thanks again Nick!
Don't kid yourself man,Reg was definitely on some gear,Larry Scott Dave Draper,Bill Pearl,Sergio Olivia etc... they all juiced back in the day. I'm 53 and natural, took me forever to get to 227 at 5'11". They didn't take a fraction of what these mutants take today though... definitely not hating just stating the truth.
Myles Millner - Absolutely, my stepdad was a powerlifter back then getting a world record deadlift of 700lbs at 12 and a half stone, I remember him saying they used to get some of their gear from their own doctors as well as each other, it’s been around a long time.

Thank you for posting this great video! I was 22 when I read Education of a Body Builder..Great book for anyone needing clear direction on achieving goals and moving one's life forward..We all need that mentor and inspiration in life..Reg Park was Arnold's blueprint for success
I remember when I was 17 or so (just started lifting for a few months back then, was a twig my whole life prior) and I found the "Education of a bodybuilder" book by Arnold and he talks a lot about Reg Park.
He was allegedly the first bodybuilder to bench press 500lbs too, and as far as I know came up with 5x5 and coached Arnold to do 500lb calf raises every day too bring them up. He also claimed he was a lifetime natural, which if you look at his physique over the span of his career, is totally believable.
They also rely on angles/lighting and photoship nowadays. Thats one reason a guy looking like he makes arnold small on instagram would look like a muscular ripped dude in real life. Instagram and social media in general has made people have a false sense of reality which is why they try to cope by distorting their physiques and getting perfect shots.
Its not to be fair but its to give them credit. Almost everyone of them used their own knowledge to progress with the sport, not like today where we have an information superhighway to rely on
All this information provided here was yet another inspirational message for me to return to the world of fitness. It’s been sometime since I’ve last worked out consistently; maybe 2 years. I have been able to maintain my overall physical fitness pretty decently with the work that I do as a warehouse man. It’s very cool to see how one inspiration can then carry on to multiple people to achieve their goals in fitness and also to maintain them of course. I like videos like this one which inspire people and maybe also provide a positive reaction in those people who are inspired. Kudos on this presentation. I loved it.
Imagine being the man who inspired the great arnie! That in itself is amazing. Shows how ahead parks was in His day. One great passing the torch to arguably the greatest!!
Reg also was able to Bench 500lbs on stage with a 2or 3 second touch on the chest---+ train with 300lbs on the hyperextention, he used to train in a freezing garage up in leeds---A really great man who deserves his place with the best of em, he inspired me to train hard and get good results---RIP and have fun with mr Reeves!!!!
One of his pieces of advice, was to remain at about 80% of your peak condition. As well as the clear health benefits, he was always " on call" to do guest appearances. Just a tech point...melanoma (the cancer he died from) is not the skin cancer that some develop with excessive sun bathing. Many get it without ever sunbathing. He loved the sun, which is why I mentioned the point. The two things are not necessarily linked.
I started training with my fathers old weirder barbell and dumbbells back in 1977 with the weirder instructin book from the early 60s ,the centre pages of the book having a big picture of reg park doing a lat spread,he became my bodybuilding idol at that time .
Nick, great video, have you ever made a video about that old 1945 clip of Steve Reeves and John Grimek? Grimek is putting nails through a board with nothing but a hankerchief in his hand. Steve had a great physique as well, far ahead of his time.
Actually, before the Mr. Olympia the Mr. Ruby was the biggest bodybuilding competition, which Big Lenny won 12 times out of 11 appearance and Jason Genova winning the under 60 IQ category
Arnold inspired me as a kid and his movies made me forget about fear when I was left home alone at night, as my parents went to work on night shifts lol Thanks Arnold
Great work. I’m a middle aged guy who still lifts.... my inspiration for lifting was due to Arnold, Franco, Zane, Mentzer and Samir Bannout. I think Lee Haney was the last of the ‘classic era’ bodybuilders with a very narrow waist and broad shoulders without the ninja-turtle belly - essentially ( with a couple of exceptions...) the last of the somewhat human-looking Mr. Olympia’s. Having a great physique with big muscles, aesthetics, symmetry - and to be functional - is where it’s at. What I see out there now.... just looks way too risky - in terms of ones health and longevity - to want to aspire to for younger lifters. But hey, call it sour grapes or ‘being salty’ after being in my prime.... I’m just a 50-something guy who likes to lift.... but I can see how what the sport has become tends to turn off 90% of the public these days. To your health. 💪🏼🙏🏻✌🏻
Wouldn't have never known this, if it wasn't for Nick! Also we should thank Reg Park...if it wasn't for him, we probably wouldn't have known about The Terminator, Hercules, The Predator, and all of Arnold's other movies that we loved... thanks again Nick! 👍
Excellent topic Nick, Reg Park had an absolutely incredible physique. It's a fairly common occurrence for the student to surpass the mentor and it's usually due to the mentor aging out. I think that if the mentor did his job well, though, the student should surpass sooner and in a bigger way. If that theory is correct Reg Park must have done his job mentoring Arnold very well. Great images and info and I agree that Reg deserves more attention and accolades. I wonder how many other professional bodybuilders have been competitive in four decades. That's gotta be rare, maybe a record of sorts? Keep up the great work. ............................PEACE!!

Pumping iron and education of a bodybuilder first showed me about reg park. His physique and structure is very similar to that of Arnold. It's like Arnold envisioned of becoming reg park so much that he became an improved version of him. No wonder you gotta have a role model and a vision.
Reg Park inspired a lot of future Bodybuilders with his Herculean Physique and Movies! He grew up in South Africa 🇿🇦 and back then nobody used Sunscreen! So despite the skin cancer he had a fairly long life for a top BB!
Make a video about if CP bodybuilders still go through the health complications that some bigger pro bodybuilders go through during/after their career or if its significantly the healthier route. We hear a lot about the bigger guys with heart attacks, kidney disease, etc. but not so much with the smaller guys. Just curious if that was a case of it not being publicly released or if it simply doesn’t happen as much. Love your videos btw! Thanks for what you do!!
Love and respect Reg Park. One thing about the man was how much he loved his wife and kids. This, Arnold was very impressed by. Also, Reg was a power lifter to be recognized in his time. and he may as well be natural, back then steroids were rather unknown, bodybuilders were still figuring out how they work
I think I read somewhere that he was the first man to bench press 500lb.
@de marques, I agree! Reg Park looked great, was fit and functional and strong...who wouldn't want all of that?
Did you know the guy or something? Wtf?
Reg Park's family is the ultimate proof that he was a great man, and a great human being. Beautiful people.
