      if GM doesn't want to put a V8 in their midsized trucks and they want turbo engines for better emissions I wish they would offer a twin turbo 3.6L V6 in their midsized twins with eco, sport, tow, off road, and rock crawl driving modes with cylinder deactivation so when in eco and low power is need they could run on 2 cylinders, and when power to tow is needed they could have full boast and use all 6 cylinders. That way you could get the mpgs of a 2 cylinder in eco mode for normal driving, and the high HP and Torque of a twin turbo 3.6L V6 in sport, and towing modes and for the top trims a BAJA mode for fast off-roading in mud and sand.
      Hopefull for 2025 they will have the turbo 4, twin turbo 6, hybrid, and full electric motor options but we will see. Since the turbo 4 gets 310hp and 430tq a twin turbo 6 should be able to get 400hp and 500tq easy and with eco mode and cylinder deactivation it could still get the same 20mpgs average.

    It's not the 2.7 I'm worried about, it's the junk 8 speed transmission that gm won't let die and just put the 10 speed in all the trucks

    • @dallasfrost1996

    I refuse to buy a 4 cyl in a full size. But for a mid size, I'd consider it. Nothing beats the sound of a V8 with a good exhaust. And yes, the sound a truck makes is important to me.

    GM used to have 6 year/100K powertrain back in the day, but scaled it back when they released their direct injected engines with cylinder deactivation. This got them out of paying for carbon fouled engines and failed lifters caused by cylinder deactivation closer to 100k.

  • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 Рік тому +3

    The 2.7 is actually a great engine. My nephew has owned one for over a year and he uses it for his moving business. Of the 4 trucks he owns, the 4 cyl Silverado is the only one that hasn't had any issues. That said, I'm planning on getting the 3.0 duramax because I want the maximum fuel economy and torque I can get, but I certainly wouldn't avoid the 2.7 if it fit my needs better.

    • @petebowl7946
      @petebowl7946 Рік тому

      The lifter issues are most likely directly related from the cylinder deactivation. Keep your truck in 9th gear until the market comes out with a DFM disabler. Hopefully the 10 speed won’t burn out.

    only reason for doing this is because the 2.7 is not selling. Rather than lower the price, they went the warranty way. Which, in the end will be a hee haw session to get GM to support their warranty. Hell, they do it now with the less time/mileage warranties.

Only reason is the Motors they have 5.3 V-8 that switches to 4 cylinder to gain fuel mileage. The lifter collapses an cam in most cases needs changed an is between 3-5k to fix! This Motor also goes throu oil at rate of 1-qaurt to 1-1500 miles an GM calls that Normal??

    I own 2018 Sierra with the 5.3l V8. After driving a Silverado with a 2.7l I wouldn’t hesitate to get one as I get like overall it felt more powerful than the 5.3l. My 2018 is paired with the old 6 speed so the 5.3 might feel peppier with the 10 speed auto. The only reason I wouldn’t get the 2.7l is because they don’t offer it on the higher trim levels or if you add the X-31 Off Road package.

    Hi Brian. Excellent post as always! I'm growing more frustrated with peoples comments - specifically throwing eggs at the 2.7L Turbo Max. This GM engine has an incredible design, makes great horsepower and torque. I get there is nothing like the sound/performance of a V8..etc. However, like you said about being "pleasantly surprised" is totally truthful. I was a skeptic as well, until I drove one. I have Major Fleet Accounts here in Edmonton, that order over 400 of these a year. The application is 60% highway and 40% Off Road. Our customers are confident with the reliability and performance of these engines. I also understand that we all have opinions, and so do I. But when people say things like "these are junk", "not selling" and "thats why GM is doing this" do not have a a real idea of the truth, and don't believe in modern engineering and technology. In comparison, when V-8 in cars were replaced with V-6, and 4 CYL engines, this seemed ridiculous at the time. However; this has evolved and now is a standard from most all large Auto Manufacturers. Why? Because it works. Fuel Efficiency, Reliability, Performance, and a overall reduction in Manufacturing Costs. I say embrace this as The World is changing more rapidly now than ever. Whats next? I can guess people will hate EV's because they don't have dual exhaust tips smoking vapor during the winter...

      If you have a strong, aggressive truck or muscle car, you want the growl of a v8 to match its presence.

    • @jameszeiger8533
      @jameszeiger8533 Рік тому

      Yes and No. The source of the carbon fouling is the PCV recirc system. Toyota and Ford both augmented their DI systems with Port Injection, which washes the valves clean and is better for low end fueling. There was a sort of Trap made aftermarket for early Ford 3.5 Ecoboost systems pre Port Injection fix, which is basically like a small can/baffle that traps oil accumulation from the PCV system. It helps is my understanding but it isn’t a perfect solution as oil vapor still gets past and coats the intake valves, just less of it, elongating the interval where you would need to get the intake ports cleaned out from carbon buildup
