  • In this episode, James and I anchor just outside the harbour to the main town of Annapolis
We take the dinghy into town and explore what the town has to offer
We find the Kunta Kite Alex Haley Memorial symbolising equality, unity and peace.
We have breakfast at the very famous Chick and Ruth's diner, an American classic that has been there for over 50 years.
We have lunch at Pusser's and James and I get to grips with the word, its spelling, its meaning and its pronunciation..but of course, James is always right ;)
We have another very tasty crab dip by the water's edge
We take a sunset cruise around the harbor of Annapolis
We have chuck on boar from Chesapeake Sails who has a wealth of knowledge about sailing and sails. He went through with us what was wrong with the cruising chute when disaster hit in the Dominican Republic on our three-day journey to the Bahamas
It seems we had been fitted with the wrong anti-torsion rope
Chuck goes into detail whilst he is with us about how to best use and handle our Cruising Chute
    We say goodbye to Chuck

Chuck , just a library of knowledge . So nice that he took you out and taught you how to properly furl your sail . I hope you got all that because me not being a sailor , I wasn't real sure what he was talking about but I liked it , lol . It was nice to see that James isn't always right and is willing to learn from a pro . With so many sailing channels out there , there is something about you two that I really like . That's why I always look forward to your videos . Glad your enjoying the USA .

Gybing with a furling spinnaker: I race single handed with furling spinnaker. Inside gybes should only be done in light air. Way too much potential for a wrap around the forestray and the mess that will make of your day. Best to do outside gybes when shorthanded, way safer and much more tolerant to uncoordinated activities. No mention regarding torsion cable tension which is important for proper top down furling. Not enough tension and you'll candycane the torsion cable. Once that happens you'll probably be 'shrimping' your spinnaker.

Pusser is ye Olde English pronunciation for the word Purser - the guy on the sailing ship who dished out the rum - like a quartermaster.

So I got a little history lesson for you. Rum was a secondary material produced after the sugar cane was pressed and all the sugar was extracted. Molasses back then was a waste material they were actually throwing it in the ground pits. At 1 point somebody figured out that you could ferment it and they turned it into a rum. So so the rum was used and combined with the filthy nasty water that was had been sitting in Wood barrels for days on end. So they added the rum to the water to sterilize it. In order to make grog. So the British navy used rum to fortify its water to make it safe for drinking. The larger issue came in when some sailors would stash away their daily ration of rum and drink the water straight. Then they would drink the rum in one go.

Love the videos. I'm sure you might have covered this in a previous video, but what was your thought process around a monohull vs a cat being the right fit for you guys? (speed, budget, anchorage options, etc.) Would love to hear your reasoning or thought on this. Thanks in advance!

Sadly we have never had a cat and so couldn't comment, we actually have never even sailed on a cat, been on many having drinks though lol..

Top down furlers are noteriously difficult to use - despite what the manufacturers say. Not something I'd be using on a short handed crusing boat. If you want a spinnaker - get a spinnaker chute bag which is 10x easier and more reliable.

If you are referring to a sock to set and douse, that would typically require someone to go on the foredeck and someone aft to manage the sheet. Deploying and furling a top down furling spinnaker can all be done from the cockpit by one oerson.

A bit pointing to obvious but, when you look at those restaurant names etc everything is European, from Scotland, Ireland etc. Nothing of the native people who once populated those lands before the genocides by the Europeans...

Pusser's Rum is a brand name of rum produced by Pusser's Rum Ltd., based in the British Virgin Islands. Nine years after the Royal Navy discontinued the daily rum ration in 1970, the company was founded to produce the rum from the original Royal Navy recipe, using a blend of five West Indian rums.

and I believe that when Admiral Nelson was killed at the battle of Trafalgar, his body was preserved in a barrel of rum. This did not stop some sailors helping themselves to a glass when no-one was looking, and it did lead to the term "Tapping the Admiral".
