  • Ruth Simmons' "Up Home: One Girl's Journey" is a memoir from the daughter of sharecroppers in East Texas who became the first Black president of an Ivy League university - a story of girlhood and the power of family, community and the classroom to transform one young person’s life.
From the farmland of East Texas to Houston’s Fifth Ward to New Orleans at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, Simmons depicts an era long gone but whose legacies of inequality we still live with today.
In advance of the book's publication, Simmons joins Texas Tribune Editor-in- Chief Sewell Chan to discuss her new memoir and the challenges facing Texas today.
