The Death (and Rebirth) of NBA Rivalries

- The New Orleans Pelicans and Phoenix Suns have ignited the NBA's newest rivalry. Zion Williamson's dunk in the second meeting between the two teams carried on some bad blood from last season's playoffs, where we saw Chris Paul and Jose Alvarado frequently going at one another.
Zion Williamson has been putting together and MVP campaign, and his dominant performances in their meetings against the Suns have made the Pelicans and Suns matchups must-see television.

i think if the league allowed players to talk trash without getting a tech, and allowed some aggressive physical contact / pushing and shoving, which doesn't hurt anyone, then rivalries would form, people would be more likely to watch the nba, as rivalries would certainly be born in that enviroment.
Amazing point, the frequency of techs for the smallest trash talk does hurt the game. The reasoning is silly too, If you actually players to not fight actually punish the players who fight much harder don't take personality away from the game. I mean the fact that you can't even do the Mutombo finger waggle anymore or "excessively taunt" is so ridiculous.
It could add fuel to the fire. But main reason why NBA doesnt have "real" rivalries is because division doesnt matter unlike with other major sport
agree, it's normal in the NBA or any basketball game to have heated moments.
The NBA are too afraid of the Malice at the Palace repeating. What theyA missed was that it became brutal because *the fans* joined in.
This and make winning your respective divisions more relevant in terms of playoff seeding
Good point but numbers don't lie. Nba today is more popular than the rough-era.
It's actually a rivalry between Dallas and New Orleans on who gets to own the Suns
This is the real truth
Child custody battle
Giannis is the Step-Dad
giannis the big daddy, won a chip on the kids
New Orleans needs to win a series before they can claim to own anything.
Chris Paul, instead of just holding on to the ball, attempted and then botched the lay up on already decided game that led to Zion's breakaway 360. Chris Paul elbowed Jose Alvarado in the neck when the final buzzer ended that resulted to the scuffle. And yet, they tried to put the blame on the Pelicans for unsportsmanlike behavior? yup. I do hope these two teams meet in the playoffs. I needed to save my vacation leave credits for that...
I just wish the players would not be too friendly with each other. the culture is too much buddy-buddy. we need the animosity and drama!
@@jarylquincina7866 I think brawl should be legal once in a while🤣
They missed the opportunity to put this 2 teams against each other at christmas special
Wonderful basketball player but my god is CP3 a whiny, hypocritical twat
@@eprjct, One Malice at the Palace per season.
I think Portland Vs. Denver is an underrated rivalry. Every time those two teams play against each other, you know it's going to be a showdown. 💯
Fr, the playoffs matchup between these two on the last few years is so entertaining
@@edraelsolas838 exactly, bro
Raptors and philly is another underated rivalry
Pelicans Thunder is a weird growing rivalry too. As a Pels fan, every single time we play OKC it comes down to final seconds. Shai hit a game winner on us, Graham hit a half court game winner on them. It’s always choppy. Plus both teams have a young superstar (Zion, Shai). Once they start contending for real (which I assume will be next year), I look forward to meeting them in the playoffs.
I also think Mavericks and Clippers is an underrated rivalry
Warriors griz rivalry was pretty intense in the playoffs. Especially with all the stuff they were saying after winning the finals about the griz and the christmas match up and stuff. I'm excited to see them go toe to toe again.
As a grizzlies fan it pissed me off so much that the celts couldn’t put them away, we lost to them via injuries and I honestly thought the celts would take care of them. But… they choked
@@dash5573 so 5 straight years of champion experience plus great veterans like opj, Gary Payton and wiggins as well as a core who, when all healthy, have made their last straight 6 NBA finals and won 4 aren't good enough to beat a team of mostly young players with no experience. In the playoffs
Grizzlies fans are some of the most delusional people I’ve ever met & seen. The Ja meat riding is CRAZY
It goes deeper than that, every regular season matchup starting with the one last in the 20-21 season has been chippy and always close, not to mention the play-in a few weeks after that first game, unfortunately the Christmas game will prolly not be a close one even with dray and klay, but I’m hoping for a good one
Yea that was embarrassing from the warriors tho
Was literally just talking about how refreshing it is to have an nba rivalry again - hope we get to see them matched up in the playoffs again. Love the vids 🏀
Bucks and Celtics should be added as a new rivalry as well.
Why
@@b_m_nz5108 recent playoff matchups and being the two most dominant teams in the league
Warriors and Grizzlies is also heating up as a new rivalry.
Add Philly in that rivalry
@@joskaizer9521Na it’s philly nets that’s it
I honestly think the league might possibly be in an emerging golden age. Basketball is getting bigger internationally, and the game is changing and getting faster paced every day, yet old trends are coming back as well like playing hard even when your team "should tank", and now rivalries with the Pelicans and Suns. And with crazy new talent that will come soon like Wembanyama and Henderson, I think the sky is the limit for the NBA in terms of publicity and growth if they play their cards right.
I’m gonna just say it, as I’ve been figuring this out as the season progresses, the sport of basketball is getting to the point where every professional who even sits in the bench can never be considered a “bum”. We see 40-50 point games from random role players every game. Every player can be a difference maker. it’s unlike the 90s and earlier where there were genuinely useless players on the floor at certain times. The stars are not the stars anymore, just the bigger names, if you catch my drift
@@calvin7978 it was already like that. corey brewer brandon jennings terrence ross and mo williams have dropped 50 in nba games
teams will tank later in the season, its still early
@yerrrrrrrr they weren't randos on the bench though, those are 6th man of year candidates or starters even
As a Suns fan I love it cuz when you talk to other Suns fan Young and Old we have a new found genuine hatred for the Pelicans we do not like them at all. I think that’s awesome cuz it’ll lead to regular season games that feel like playoff games and I couldn’t imagine what a playoff series this year would look like.
Agreed. As a Pels fan we hate you guys as well. lol
As a Pels fan, I hate you guys, but I think we both can admit it makes the regular season fun and I believe that rivalries always end up being good for both teams. Also idk about other Pels fans but I secretly root for y’all to be good against the rest of the league so that our wins against you make us look better. Flock up!
Nothing sadder than a suns fan
@@jaytravels6586 I’m pels fan too
Ask an okc fan I’m jus watching hoping you can soon hate me too🥲😭 but y’all new rivalry goes crazy
Football rivalries are just another level. The amount of passion that we football fans bring to the stadium are just unbelievable when compared to any major league in the US. I live in a small town in Portugal and the city’s team is on the third division and we have an amazing atmosphere that solos every nfl or nba stadium
I really hope soccer (I'm American, sorry) with MLS, and more specifically USL (both Championship and League 1), can truely pick up steam and show what those fans can do. I've started going to local lower league game and they are so much damn fun. Super cheap too.
@@chrissao_502 no need to apologize, Ireland, Australia, and Japan use soccer as well.
That's not what the video is about 💀. Plus college stadiums solo every soccer stadium
Great video man - I am so hyped for Suns and Pelicans!!
I think a big potential team-based rivalry with staying power that could happen is if Adam Silver gives Seattle a team again. No doubt the first home game against OKC that crowd would be thunderous.
Knicks-Hawks and Blazers-Nuggets has been going on for a few years, and will continue
It really isn't Knicks-Hawks it's more like Knicks-Trae Young
@@rustyminer655and even at that it’s more Knicks fans vs. Trae Young
Yo Boston and Milwaukee have been underrated rivals for about 7 years now they seem to always find each other in the playoffs
Facts there playoff series is always intense
Good point about the rivalries in NBA being mainly player-based. Pelicans vs Suns is definitely refreshing cause every player on the team is in on it. Like you said, obviously Chris Paul vs Jose Alvarado is a big part of the rivalry sparking but the entire teams are sparked in, just as it was with Celtics vs Lakers back in the day, or Knicks vs Sixers, etc etc. I think with every player becoming better and better in the league, we are going to see more of these rivalries as the stars of yesteryear are going away and we’ll see further fueling of rivalries. This should be fun
Bro your videos are actually goated. Bare entertaining
@AlexHoops liking my comment goated
Miami vs Boston is a rivalry. Bam and Jimmy vs Tatum and Brown is a legacy of LeBron and D-Wade vs Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
W vid. Suns vs pelicans conference finals game would be SICK. Also I feel like clippers mavs is a little bit of a rivalry. PG and Kawaii vs Luka has always been fun.
Pels fans here, most of the fanbase kinda respect Chris Paul for what he did here both for the team and the community after Hurricane Katrina. Even though he's not exactly the first option if we had to name the greatest Pelicans of all time (that would be Jrue for most people right now) he's quite respected, but not to the point where we try to ignore his annoying antics and dirty plays.
Btw great vid, a rivalry between Suns and Pels would be cool to live, especially if they stay competitive in the near future with CP soon retiring and the Ayton situation
As a European football fan, what makes a good rivalry game is when the ref lets the play be intense even with temper flares from botched sides. But when that whistle IS blown, keeping a hard nosed, even stance to deescalate is the hardest part

Barcelona and Real Madrid has been going on for years and when Messi and Ronaldo were playing in La Liga they helped propel to new heights not seen before. NBA has yet to do something like that since NBA is such a star driven league that they constantly promotes players rather than constantly promoting teams since players would already promote the teams in itself just by playing for the team.
As a die hard New Orleans Pels/Hornets fan who was born in the city, I LIVE for this kind of rivalry. I was such a CP3 fan when he played for us, and you could argue he is likely a good reason a lot of us bear new animosity towards the suns (directed at CP3). But to see the games now, is to see that even the bench gets into it and its becoming a unique rivalry that I hope we see a good series of in the playoffs because as a fan, I'd love to see some of you Suns fans there and get some words in!!
Fun Fact Jose Alvarado used to go to CP3’s camps, Idol to Rival
Sports need rivalries to be important. As long as it is easy to switch teams and get penalized for trash talking, a sport will stay stale.
Taunting shouldn’t be a penalty or foul in any sport. If you wanna shut them up, go and beat them.
I love this Pels Suns rivalry cause literally NOBODY is on the Suns’ side
I mean I'm a suns and I'm kinda on their side but just because I'm a fan. I don't like the pelicans as a team but I do like the fans
This is NOT your usual format, but you killed it as USUALLY. And raised an important topic with obvious reason which somehow passed by me before: that were the players who buried the rivalries.
An underrated and unknown rivalry that has been brewing for about 3/4 years now is the Magic and Raptors. Ever since the Magic stole game 1 in 2019 every game has been chippy and hard fought. It kinda cooled off after both Gordon and Lowry left both teams, but after this weekends series it has definitely reignited. I may be biased as a Magic fan but this is one to keep an eye on.
congrats on 50k your one of the only nba you tubers I watch now
Great video. You used this perfect opportunity to talk about a relevant topic with the most timely example. You were quick about it, too. Well done
Rivalries make everything 100000x more entertaining. Make it happen, nba.

The NBA should do an in-season tournament.
They should do 3 divisional tournaments. Winner from each division gets a reward. Each team from their division would each play 10 games. The 8 best record will make it into the in season tournament. The tournament will be 1 game elimination. Winner of the tournament gets a trophy, MVP, and extra week off before the playoff start. The in season tournament would count towards their regular season record. This allows the league to cut down the regular season games total. The in season champs would be seeded by the end of the season by their winning percentage instead of total wins.
•Regular season having more meaning
•High probability of creating much needed legendary rivalries
•Small market players can get more social media recognition
•Teams in divisions are located closer together so players would have more time to rest in between games
•Fan support would be at an all time high in single game elimination format.
2 divisions combined for the tournament.
Pacific x Northwest
Ex:Suns x Nuggets
Central x Atlantic
Ex:Bucks x 76ers
Southwest x Southeast
Ex:Mavs x Hawks
10 regular games
Top 8 teams make the in season tournament
1 game elimination
Last team standing crowned champs of division tournament:
•Trophy
•MVP
•A week off before playoffs start
18 games max, 10 games minimum
Record will be added to regular season total
Imagine watching a tournament where you have
Curry, LeBron, Kawhi, Booker, Fox-Pacific
Lillard, Jazz, Jokic, Shai, Edwards-Northwest
All in one tournament
Or
Giannis, Cade, Lavine, Mitchell, Tyrese-Central
Embiid, Siakam, Knicks, Tatum, KD-Atlantic
Or
Spurs, Luka, Rockets, Zion, Ja-Southwest
Trae, Paolo, Butler, Lamelo, Beal-Southeast
Awesome vid, wouldn't mind more like this in the future
Jokic vs Gorbert
Mitchell vs Murray
Before Utah Traded Then Seem To Be A Good Rivalry That Bubble Performance Between Mitchell & Murray Was Historic
I love this video, you should do one on the warriors and grizzlies as well!
I'm gonna be honest this is my favourite kind of bball content. Wish people were more romantic about basketbal
love this style, please keep making more basketball related video essays!
Rivalries happen between teams who are of similar calibre, therefore can be competitive. The nature of the NBA and some American sports in general means that the Lakers and Celtics could be going neck and neck one season then the Celtics could be tanking for the next few years and vice versa. It’s not really a rivalry if it’s not competitive. So there will never be proper rivalries in basketball unless both teams can sustain an elite level of play for years
New subscriber here. Definitely more videos like these. Awesome!
This was great, keep'em coming!
There’s definitely some good organic rivalries that have been years in the making. Celtics bucks, clippers mavs, Celtics 76ers, grizzlies warriors
Great Video, really enjoyed it

great video alex! this type of content is really good and you shold keep at it
Great video sir
Zions post game presser is iconic to me
Dont forget about Kings and Lakers rivalry from 1999-2003. It was a great rivalry maybe a little lopsided but still very competitive and has some controversy. Gone for a while but may ignite again soon!
Knicks vs Pacers and Knicks vs Bulls of the 90s were wars.
Love this content!!
Warriors vs. Grizzlies is an amazing one too
I think sixers raptors has subtly become a very bitter rivalry these last couple years
Love the video, a new type of content and love to see it!
love the vid! keep it up.
That pronunciation of Tottenham was brutal 😭
Some current NBA rivalries I like: Suns vs Pelicans, Bucks vs Celtics, Hawks vs Knicks, Nets vs Celtics, Raptors vs Sixers, Warriors vs Grizzlies, Celtics vs Sixers, Nets vs Knicks, and Nuggets vs Blazers
OKC vs Seattle hopefully becomes a reality
The Lakers Celtics rival didn’t start until after Mikan retired, you could argue 1959 when Rookie Elgin Baylor led his Minneapolis Lakers to the NBA Finals, but it really started in 62 and 63 when they met back to back times in the finals and were actually evenly matched (west and Baylor vs Russell and Jones)
W video, would love more content like this
If Kawhi had stayed in Toronto, Raptors vs Philly would've easily been one imo. Both fanbases are annoying as hell which is perfect for a rivalry and seeing Kawhi in a Raptors jersey would give 6ers fans ptsd. I'm saying this as a Sixers fan.
Raptors fan here.
Even without Kawhi, I think there’s a general sense that our fanbases hate each other.
Joel certainly doesn’t like us, and we in turn will probably never forget the zero point game.
And, of course, while I personally blame doc more than anyone else, Toronto did more or less end the playoff run last year by injuring Embiid.
@@spookyghostwriter3110 Sorry for saying this but you're the most insightful and reasonable Raptors fan I've ever spoken to. Thanks for saying this, I absolutely agree. Let's make this rivalry happen
I always feel like baseball and football have way better rivalries because of divisions. NBA also had great rivalries when we had divisions like Philly vs Celtics and Bulls vs Pistons but without divisions it just feels empty. I get they got rid of divisions because of seeding but I rather have rivalries and “bad seeding” happen once in a while instead of 0 rivalries. NBA should adopt the MLB scheduling where you play your division rivals more and guarantee the division winner a top 3 seed. Have teams play division rivals 8 times that’s already 32 games have them play the rest of the conference 4 times for a total of 72 then any 10 random inter conference games to get to 82. Imagine the tension between the Pelicans and Grizzlies with young superstars fighting to grab a top 3 seed and they have to go through each other 8 times to grab that top seed. The Sixers and Celtics having the historical rivalry reignite. If people want to see what a Suns vs Celtics game would look like due to lack of inter conference play then make the damn finals to do it. Sure people don’t see Yankees Dodgers but if they want it bad enough then make the World Series. The general public doesn’t want to see Celtics vs Rockets, give us more Celtics vs Sixers. We don’t want to see Suns vs Magic, give us more Lakers vs Suns
Team rivalries literally MAKES sports!!!
loved this 👍
Suns vs Pelicans, Warriors vs Grizzlies, Bucks vs Celtics, 76ers vs Nets, I think there could be a handful of new rivalries. We just need to add more fuel to their existing flames
You want Rivalries in the NBA? Teams have to play each other more and give them something to fight over. When the Association goes to 32 teams, go with 4 Conferences of 8 teams and no divisions, an add an NBA Semifinals that are reseeded 1-4 and 2-3. Now the schedule will still have (H-A) against every inter conference team (48 games) but you get to play 5 games against each 7 teams in your conference (35 games). Then you go to war in the playoffs, top 4 teams of each conference every year. Same Number of playoff series, but SOOO much more intense fighting for your conference title.
There's a bit of one brewing between the Raptors and the Cavs. Between "Lebronto", the teams both being relatively young, relative proximity both being on the great lakes, Barnes winning ROTY over Mobley, and both teams just matching up really well against each other. I can't speak for the Raps fans, but I know here in Cleveland there's some animosity towards them as a team and less player based
Blazers Nuggets has been heating up too. Both teams have met and knocked eachother out in the playoffs, Jokic winning the starting job over Nurkic and then getting traded to Portland.
As a Warriors fan I miss the Warriors-Rockets, Warriors-Thunder and Warriors-Cavs rivalry. The Warriors still have rivalries but its more of Warriors v Celtics and Warriors v Grizzlies. We could also see Warriors v Lakers if the Lakers can get it together and do something while Lebron is still over there.
Im loving the Warriors-Griz Rivalry because the Griz are a very young squad and the warriors have a few young guys its a rivalry that can span JP3 and Morant careers as two players drafted the same year too
Thank you for pointing out Chris Paul accolades with his time with the hornets. He was a pretty good player for them but his time in New Orleans wasn’t iconic like the media points it out to be. His Jersey won’t be retired there but he’ll get an ovation if he stops by after he retires.
Early 2000's Spurs Lakers was definitely a rivalry. It was basically a battle to see who would win the title from 1999-2005 (minus the 2004 season)
Indiana Miami has been a good rivalry in the past especially when they had the big 3 and we had PG. Both teams were contenders so it was alot of fun in the playoffs, obviously its cooled down now but we saw flashes of it in the bubble between Jimmy Butler and TJ Warren
Paul is primadonna, and love to sneak elbows then run away from any arguments.
I like that Pels /Suns, Grizzlies /Warriors have some beef between them
Although we don’t have any FULL BLOWN rivalries rn, I think there are a good number that if given the opportunity in the next 18 months can blossom into full blown rivalaries: Memphis vs GS, NO vs PHX, Dallas vs PHX, MIL vs Boston, Phi vs MIL, PHI vs BKLYN etc
Grizzlies and Warriors could have potential as well
Should’ve brought up hockey rivalries. Shit is the most entertaining thing to watch.
There is an other rivalrie with the suns too, I thought that you were going to talk about it. That luka now is booker's daddy 🤣🤣
Yoooo that footage of Wilt and Bill fighting, anyone have context on that? Never seen it before! The whole venue was up in arms, so it definitely looks intense.
I would say Suns-Mavericks is also a new born rivalry, especially considering the beef between Luka and booker, but then again that one could be more player based
You didn’t mention that that game, Alvarado had a bad rib, so Chris Paul purposefully hit Alvarado’s rib when when he was going up for a layup. The Suns are also extremely annoying, easily relating to MJ’s quote, “It’s easy to act tough when you’re up.” They did this in the Suns and Mavs series and they also get extremely obnoxious when they have a good play when they’re up by 20.
Best thing to happen for basketball
As much as I love the NBA it always sucked how there were no true rivalries besides Lakers-Celtics. But I really hope it changes soon. I think they should go back to the division winner system to bring them back.

Gr8 video
you definitely should’ve mentioned the grizzlies and warriors
this and warriors / grizzlies should be very fun rivalries over the next few years!
