First the young man was Hsi Hing, or elder brother, in kung fu terms, (which might have been vaguely possible, as his nei jia flows nicely.) But now, he has elevated himself above master, and above senior master, to Grandmaster. This is a term which Im sure never existed historically. The closest term might refer to a style's inventor/founder and maybe the first 2 or 3 of that master's lineal descendants. OR, in his elevation, has the young man also discovered that he actually INVENTED Tai Chi?
I know what you're saying Daniel. Si Hing=elder brother, Si Fu = master, Si Jowe = founder. Here's the problem: the temple was burned in 1928 with 90% of the buildings destroyed and the few remaining monks scattered. A decade later there was one monk, one gardener and one cook. The wars and the cultural revolution did not help much. After the tv series "Kung Fu" premiered 50 years ago and with the death of Mao; there was a renewed interest in the temple. I've heard that the film "Shaolin Temple" was filmed on the actual ruins 4o years ago.. This all lead to a massive restoration of at least a dozen buildings and opening to western tourists. If you look at photos from a century ago: the temple never looked this good. The problem is that Beijing sought to make money from more than tourism. Most people believe that the current Shaolin monks are real Buddhist monks when they are in fact athletes there to gain revenue for the Chinese government. One method is to have affiliate schools in other countries and designate these foreign "masters" as "Shaolin Monks". I first encountered this 25 years ago at my school here in Brisbane. He was my age and walked around with a shaved head and robes claiming that he was a monk for 99 days of the year. Currently, there is a fat Indian also in robes who also claims affiliation with the temple. All this serves to draw in students wishing to learn authentic Kung Fu.
@@arnbo88 yes i appreciate that... i know some of the history as well. Here in the US, wealthy Chinese Americans helped with the temple's re-establishment, and it was supported as a cause by a popular US magazine Inside Kung Fu, particularly Sifu Gene Ching. Where I get particularly pissed off is when folks purport to have spiritual values, then treat their would-be supporters with such disrespect. As if anyone cant open the internet, a book, or even attend a kung fu school in person! And in the process, learn a thing or two. First he is Elder Brother, a few months later, he changes his name to Master So-and-so,then a couple weeks after that, hes styling himself Grandmaster Blah Blah Blah. Its insulting. As an internal Sifu, myself, I can see just about exactly what this kids abilities are at present, and i concede his nei gung flows nicely: 8 Piece Brocade, Lohans, Yi Jin Jing: the usual suspects... But thats not even scratching the surface, nor is nei gung really that
@@danielross5695 Cool! I also studied Nei Gung with the Gao family in Yangshuo, Guang Xi. If you have a disdain for fake masters then you would love Tom Lo of Brisbane. What's really funny is that in 1979, there were only 3 old monks at the Shaolin Temple and none of them were martial artists. It turns out that the martial monks were imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. Then when the 1982 movie "The Shaolin Temple" became immensely popular, the Chinese government invested $$$ to renovate the dilapidated temple and turned it into a museum and tourist attraction. They installed a fake abbott and recruited wushu students from the local wushu schools to dress up like monks to entertain the tourists. Now, everyone and his brother claims to be a "Shaolin monk". So where did they all come from when the true Shaolin tradition was broken decades ago and there were no longer any authentic martial monks to teach them?
@@gharm9129 Even if that were true, and I highly doubt that it is, it doesn't explain where the new generation of "Shaolin monks" came from or who taught them.
@@hamstring6792 Who said anything about the Shaolin temple in China? I said they escaped several times, the monks did, to Taiwan and other places. Not reading or understanding what I wrote is clear indication you didn't read any histories correctly.
