I was fortunate to see him in this role on Broadway. Amazing performance. Lucky enough to also see him also in The Producers original Broadway cast. Yes he is amazing on stage!
@David, actually MB never sang as Simba, despite his Broadway experience, lol. First film was Toto's lead musician Joseph Williams, second was voice actor Cam Clarke. ^__^
This is great to see! While Finch is the lead in this show, the part requires a great character actor/singer to pull it off. This clip shows that Matthew Broderick was an excellent choice to inherit this role from Robert Morse. He’s excellent. That’s what made having Darren Criss and Nick Jonas take over the part from Daniel Radcliffe such a curious choice. Both are very appealing performers but they’re essentially leading men, not character actors. I wonder how much character either brought to the role beyond likability.
Broderick does a good job here, but you gotta see the original by Robert Morse. You'l see the lyrics being brought to life. Sadly he passed away last year 2022.
@@jackiegleason9272 Did not see Broderick in the Freshman, but I've seen him in several things. He is excellent. And overall Broderick's entire career is probably greater than Morse's. But How to Succeed is Morse's house.
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw Madmen was a show I wanted to watch but just never got to it. I've seen scenes on UA-cam and Morse is always excellent in them. Morse = 60's ad men.
Yes, he was great in this role. Deliciously funny. How funny the lead is, is a huge part of the success of this show. Daniel Radcliff is not a funny guy. And Matthew Broderick is just a bit too handsome to be a failure. Robert Morse totally owned this show. He was like Carol Channing in Dolly - nobody has ever come close to her in that show. They both had a built in spotlight. RIP Robert.
I am struck by how small Matthew Broderick's voice is. I am surprised he could be heard in a theater, but I imagine that singers in Broadway musicals wear body microphones these days, as opposed to the days when performers really had to know how to sing and be heard to the back of the hall.
It's also a cinematic performance. Robert Morse was hilarious in this number on the stage, because he looked like the last person who would get anywhere. Matthew Broderick's a bit too handsome to fail. Robert Morse had you laughing just by grinning. He had you in the palm of his hand before he spoke! He owned this role - totally.
Ice Kokoro I had the same question! I've always known he could sing so I always just assumed he did Simbas singing voice and my mind was blown when I found out it was it!!! It doesn't make any sense.
Mostly, it was just tradition, very few voice actors got to sing their parts in animated musicals, back then. But yeah, it was both confusing then fascinating, memorizing all the voices for my fave films & characters, as well as series. ^-^
Not funny enough. He's cute, and he can sing it, but he hasn't quite got Robert Morse's loopy, naughty quality that made his performance so great. Forget the film. it just didn't capture how great Morse was on the stage. And the less said about Daniel Radcliff and that production, the better. Robert Morse wasn't unlike Carol Channing in a way - the magic, delicious quality that they both had on the stage, evaporated in front of a camera. The problem here is that you know Matthew Broderick could easily succeed, he's handsome and together, Robert Morse's genius was that he was the very last person who who thought could succeed, which made you want him too - badly!! And made the original show so much funnier that the more recent productions. And that haircut!! He will be missed.
So well said! I watched this video first as I've been a fan of Matthew Broderick, loved it and then watched Robert Morse and loved his performance more. Much as I like Broderick I must say he's simply too good-looking for this role and doesn't seem funny. Robert Morse (R.I.P) on the other hand is so great as Finch. Also all the more recent versions like Radcliffe or Jonas just pale in comparison. They are like playing totally different characters to Morse's Finch. By the way does anyone see a bit of Jim Carrey in Morse's Finch mannerisms? I think Carrey must have studied Morse's performance as Finch....
Perfect casting. He's got the cute impishness and similar vocal inflections of Robert Morse may he RIP.

Yes he is amazing on stage!
wow I didn't know Matthew broderick could sing! he's amazing he pulled it off so well wonder what other talents he has as got. simply divine.
Yes, he sings very nicely---also in "The Producers" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It"
How did you not know he could sing lol. He played simba

HE IS IN THE BEE MOVIE
He’s also an excellent driver 😳
WHAT A VOICE!!!!!!! What libretto
Saw this at The Kennedy Center in DC, it was fantastic, never will forget it.
Wow! Never thought he could sing since he is a good actor!
I love this tune. I challenge you to sing this and don’t feel frigging great about yourself
He did this shortly after Ferris Bueller and won a Tony award for this role. The late 80’s were very good for Broderick.

He does Finch so weeeeeellll heck
So good 😍
This is very very good. Morse was GREAT.
Exactly! I love Matthew Broderick (have you seen him in The Freshman?) ... but Robert Morse OWNS this part.

I listen to this and ask why they felt a need to cut him singing in Lion King and replace his voice? The man can sing for goodness sake
Love him!
Saw this when Sarah Jessica Parker joined him for a bit as Rosemary. Wonderful!

If he can sing, why did they have someone else sing for Simba in the Lion King films? I just don't get it.
Ice Kokoro I had the same question! I've always known he could sing so I always just assumed he did Simbas singing voice and my mind was blown when I found out it was it!!! It doesn't make any sense.
His singing wasn't right for the character.

i said the something too
I believe it was because he didn't actually sing back then. He learned how to sing for this role a couple years later.
his voice is gerbil-esque
Nailed it! Actually better than the original. But what do you expect from the man who played Leo Bloom.
Jess Young Watch the original again and think about this ^^^. The original is a legend... Broderick is not close.
And who played Ferris Bueller! Yeet!
@@taylornamahoe03 i love a be spy til him and going to
He's just okay. That little tin voice of his. Can't hold a candle to Robert Morse.
the men in this version sound much more thin and reedy in comparison to the booming male chorus of the Robert Morris version.

I saw Morse in the original. Saw Radcliffe who was fine. Broderick has no charisma.
A disaster
