I occasionally watch the washroom scene where Finch sings it to himself. I would be struck by the irony that a conniver like him would see the eyes of a seeker of "wisdom and truth." I just now realized that she saw that in him, and told him very powerfully, and in his hour of crisis he looked deep into his soul and saw that, too. A great lesson in how to positively impact people.
Michele Lee was the second or third (I forget which, exactly) replacement for the role of "Rosemary" in the original B'way production, and yet she was the one selected for the film. Lucky for her, and we, the audience.
so I was reading an excerpt from the book: Once upon a Secret, by Mimi Alford. She wrote that when JFK played this song and listened to the words "You have the cool, clear eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth" "seemed to light up some pleasure center deep inside his brain"
you can tell , Morse's great acting here. He stays VERY understated or whatever the word is. He lets her sing and makes us the audience really believe.. He DOES NOT upstage. God i want to see in TRU. Has that been filmed? His Tony award stage one-act thingy of Truman Capote?? God I would LOVE to see thAT
@julbim You've said a mouthful and all that you said made me smile. I think that Mercer and Carmichael are great but NO one makes my heart go pitter-patter like Loesser. All day I've been singing his songs. I just LOVE this guy! Thanks for YOUR comment!
check out Nancy Wilson/Jazz Scene 62 if you like this tune...the whole--live--set is good, but her version of "I Believe in You" is...WOW!l...starts @ the 19.40 mark.it has that greatest of all jazz elements:excitement.
@chinzebo I agree. You know, in terms of really understanding the day to day human condition and needs I wonder if there has ever been a greater songwriter than Frank Loesser. I am in eternal awe at his lyrics, both humorous and romantic, coupled with his incredible melodies and harmonies...My Time Of Day would have made Ravel or Debussy proud and My Heart Is So Full Of You is the joint greatest love duet alonside Bess You Is My Woman Now.
Actually, this did not happen in the original Broadway concept and production of the show. It was added for the movie and, I think, really ruins the impact of the number when Finch later sings it to himself. It makes it look like he is remembering what Rosemary previously told him instead of expressing his own narcissism and egotism. It makes him seem like much less of a conniving, self-promoting (though loveable) ass than he really is.
Yeah? This was an "added-to-the-movie" song?! i never knew that ! I was reading everybody's comments and agreeing that i love it as a ballad, i love Her as-Rosemary, and then i read yours and sort of agree -him singing it later to himself... I was....18-20 when i saw the movie, never having seen the stage origins, and... I guess i thought it was-showing how love Can-transform and empower a person.. Him singing-the-song to-himself, paired with the businessmen (gotta stop that man!...cold! Or he'll stop me).. I took it like that grain of her-love, that song through his-voice _was_ the only thing that protected him from their take-down. Right ?... Like he ends the movie a less conniving ass, yes?
@tigibus7 then they were successful because it was their intent in making Finch sing it as a reprise to tone down his egotism and narcissism. Thanks for confirming their intended result
Funny how Morse says he's "27 years old, not getting any younger", sure he WAS getting younger, considering he was actually 35 or 36 at the time of this movie.

Michele Lee was an exquisite singer (and actress) is this is an example of her at her best.
she was perfect for this part
This is what's missing today...........Class!
One of the great and best sung songs (here) ever.
my all time favorite musical. i fell in love with michele lee when she sang this song, and I was about 7 years old. :)
Aww, what a great song and Ms Lee does a fine rendition. GOD bless Frank Loesser.
Lovely to hear it done as a ballad.
Gorgeous lady. Everyone my age knows her from Knots Landing in the 80s.

I love Michele Lee!!!! =D
Such beautiful lyrics
I had the opportunity to be in this play in High School, I am so greatful that I got to be a part of this and get to know this musical!!!
Great song and memorable moments for it's time.Gentle

I love this woman. Remember when she was on Knott's Landing?
She was Knots Landing
Love this song
love her in HTSiB ...she is fabulous!
Thank you
Great to see this. I think the TV station cut it when I watched the movie years ago. Thanks!

You're right.. I never feel he's acting, sitting still. I believe he's listening. And it helps me listen.
And she's freaking amazing. Perfect casting
Yeah, it's a really good song. I encourage it.
Beautiful, we are both crying haha
great acting on the parts of both actors. my school is doing this for our spring musical. i'm so syked!
An local DC indie band did a cover to this one. This is a good movie.

Yes! GUYS AND DOLLS (love Marry The Man Today! Love the entire show -- top of MY Best List!)
😌 Jan
JFK loved this song. He use to have his mistress Mimi Beardsley sing it to him. Great self awareness.
Heard her on XM, she sounds like Phillis Diller these days. She could sing.
Was she REALLY the singer, lovely as it is the lips seem a second behind the words.
Michele was lip-synching to her own pre-recorded voice. Miming to a playback is the way musical numbers have usually been done in movies.

Did anybody mention Nelson Riddle ??????!
Or for that matter, how Lee was influenced by Streisand's phrasing and breath control.

@@this_Joe_Smith the song wasn't added to the movie - Rosemary's singing it before the executive washroom scene was added

We all know her as Karen Fairgate MacKenzie
Back when actors had actual skills and not just good managers.
xpaganda
You gave me a chuckle!!
Jan😊
No talent today, not even on Broadway! HAMILTON ???? Toni-worthy???? Sad...!

Michele Lee was only 25
