- Oh, I LOVE how this trendy bow tie top turned out! I made it out of one of my brother’s old button ups! Here’s how I did it:
Instructions:
- start with a button up top that is about one size larger than your normal size.
- remove the entire collar and the finished edges where the buttons and button holes are.
- crop the sleeves and length of the shirt to the desired lengths
- double rolled hem the collar and front opening of the top as well as the edge of the extra fabric removed from the length of the top.
- sew in two lines of basting stitches the the button of the shirt base and the top of the extra fabric and pull until small ruffles appear.
- pin the pieces right sides together, lining up the existing seams, and sew them together.
- sew a small channel on the end of each sleeve, leaving a small opening near the underside.
- thread a small piece of elastic through using a safety pin.
- sew the ends of the elastic together and close the channel.
- using some of your left over materials, cut 8 long strips (mine were about 2 inches wide), and sewing them down the length, right sides together.
- use a safety pin to turn them right side out, double roll one end and pin them in place where you’d like it.
- hand sew the raw edge closed and voila, you’ve got yourself the cutest little summer top!

Oh yeah! He was getting rid of the shirt since it had stains all over the collar and didn’t fit him anymore. And I asked before I started the project!
