O-roll Orchestrion plays the "Atlanta Rag"

- I'm making progress on the O-roll orchestrion I'm building. I should have the top section installed with the xylophone, bells, flute pipes and violin pipes playing in a day or two.
I made a new type of mandolin rail using .010" mylar sheet and brass rivet caps with washers and I really like the sound of it.
I also have the hammer rail pneumatic installed. Notice how Art Reblitz effectively uses the hammer rail to accentuate single chords. It adds so much to the performance!
This is actually one of the best O roll players I have heard. As annoying as O-roll players can be, this is smooth and not unpleasant. Very nice!
That big wheel is so pretty. Craftsman took care in creating this machine.
De onde nasce inspiração ?
It's also in very good tune...huzzah!
Pre-electronics data storage and retrieval/music synthesis. Great!
Not synthesis. Automation. ;-)
it's not synthesizing anything lol it is playing
It's not synthesizing the sound of anything. It's a musical instrument of it's own. If it were a pipe organ, and there were pipe organs with player systems, then you would get away with saying it is synthesis, as they more often than not include imitation sounds of real orchestral instruments.
Awesome! Much nicer to watch all those moving parts than a modern computer.
Technically this a computer albeit one made for a highly specific task.
An amazing piece of art and technology! Just stunning! As a kid I saw orchestrions from time to time and I loved them. Today they have almost completely disappeared. Thanks for sharing!
Это анимация, мультик! Какой же ты наивный! 😅😅😅
@@user-mi2mt8ud1mIn Russia you fake it, in Europe you make it. 😊
the fact it can even turn on and off the mandolin bar is amazing
And the guitar harp has a nice sound to, not too tinney
This is the pinnacle of what can be done with mechanics and a little electrical engineering. As no improvement is available, then you have to change of technology.
The original multi-track sequencer! ❤
Eheh, very analog, eheheh
amazing. I'm so glad that someone is keeping it alive . thank you.
Pure magic, I could only dream of owning one.
You and me both 🙏
Totally awesome
Thanks for sharing this 👍👍
Doing a terrific job on this. Really exciting to see this come together .
What an absolute genius and entertaining contraption. Ingenuity at its finest.
Thank you for the close ups. As a retired mechanical tech i love seeing how things operate. 💜💜💜
That's some real craftsmanship right there. Well done.
Norwegians are crazy good inventors - thank you Norway!
Pianola Alberto Finzi, Itália🇮🇹
fabulous arrangement, amazing craftsmanship. What a great day to be alive!
That's a very curious looking accordion in there
Amazing . A lot of moving parts. Great work .
Cool to see the interior mechanics on one of these!
Well..!! That made my day...😀...............Thank you..
Este es el padre de las cajitas musicales en papel codificado, puede tocar cualquier cancion hasta el terrible regueton 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳💖es toda una joya musical..........

WAW!!!
AMAZING!!!
GOD BLESS YOU!!!
I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤BRASIL 🥰 😍 🥰 😍 🥰
Gostei da bomba de ar de fluxo continuo.
This is fabulous and fascinating!!!! This is SO GOOD!
Wat super leuk om te zien
Браво Человеку .а инструмент играет так только благодаря тому кто так умело обьединил и настроил
I can't believe a roll of paper is doing all that.
Perforated paper was used to make complicated patterns for weaving. Then the system got adopted for self-playing instruments, and only then did the metal industry see the potential of that technology to turn, bore and mill engine parts and exchangeable parts for mass production.
youtube itself is just ones and zeroes

Could you believe now, that this mobile do all these without even the paper?
ПРОГРЭСС, улыбнуло 😊
This needs to be on spotify. This exact video and music.
It doesn’t get better than this😎😎😎
Thanks for posting this 🙏
Very nice, Bruce
Good to see you uploading again! missed your restorations! Edit: apparently UA-cam just isnt pushing notifications about your uploads to me. My apologies
Beautiful work of art. Such a nice sound. 🎉
So cool just pure fun
Wonderful to see and hear. So many thing to figure out. The four small bellows working together; go figure.
Was reminded of David Nancarrow, American composer who created piano music with hand-punched piano rolls. Eventually, students/followers created a machine to punch the rolls.
Excellent restoration thoroughly enjoyed it. It says it should be coming out of the showroom.
I like your orchestrions your good at building them
That is really cool!
Impressive, I like what you do in the next video
Great. State of Art machine ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow. Beautiful tone all around!
Really great machine!
Magnificent! Bravo!
Seeing and hearing James P. Johnson play this piece was truly a musical marvel.
It makes you want to dance.
Essa pianola italiana Alberto Finzi é uma raridade. A criatividade e a perfeição mecânica com que eram construídas é impressionante.
Parabéns pelo registro. 👍👏
Very cool! Good to meet you in Palm Springs 👍
Likewise! Nice meeting you.
It even plays with "feel", emphasizing certain notes more than others. Very organic playing.
As far as I know, orchestrions suffer from a lack of note dynamics because of the way notes are recorded. So it's hardly possible to talk about any "feel" here =)
@@Masuraodesu fascinating. My ear says differently. People like you just enjoy disagreement. What I said was a subjective interpretation you maniac.
@@ReichRoller I'm not a maniac, I just play piano, and we studied similar devices in music history class. But if you hear dynamics - ok, I don't mind, just let's not get personal.
Love those old pianolas, one of the best I've heard.
I love that song actually!
Thanks so much for sharing this! Words are not adequate to describe the wonderful emotions this beautiful music evokes!
Thank you for playing the piano. Hello, it's warm weather.
I love this happy music! I want to have one to turn on first thing in the morning when I wake up!
Нифига себе . Классная, крутая шарманка . Инженерам респект и уважуха )
awsome video
wonderful
Absolutely beautiful!
I love the song
Incroyable machine.
Excellent !!!Amazing!!!Wonderful!!!👍👍👍
Amazing!
How wonderful.
wow amazing
Simple in its intricacy. The pinnacle of fluid and creative mechanics.
Wintergarten has some competition.
(even though Instruments are in different classes/families)
Brilliance!
Que maravilha de máquina. Sucessos
C'est Magique, magnifique instrument ❤❤
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. Wonderful machine you have there!
That's a really nice and clean roll! Also very nice sound!
How Cool is this!!!
First digital format right there!
Love this 😊
I used to play this on my guitar!
This is my jam like actaully
Marvelous !!
C'est formidable ❤
Bravo à l’inventeur de cette merveille !😊
Je suis pianiste et j’adore !!
Maravilloso. Congratulations from Spain
Awesome !
I want one !
I can see Fani Willis and Nathan Wade dancin to this music around their cash horde down in Geeeorgia!
Wah ji wah bahut very nice 👍
Meravigliosa 👍👍👍
🎉🎉 That's great 🎉🎉
😮 nice
Those mini pipes are sure funny.
I thought the quad-mounted air pumps on a cam were cool. Is that common and I have never noticed?
Yes that type of pump is quite common in many orchestrions and reproducing pianos.
I agree. That is so cool. It needs a window over it. I can just watch it continually.
Para ser algo mecánico, toca muy bien 👏
great !
This, in a way, is far more sophisticated than a computer.
В 19-век были такие забавные музыкальные приборы - механические пианино. И, заметьте, работали они без современных технологий!😂
Que buen músico AKI Nay Ballas jajaja saludos que lindo aplaauso 👋👋👋👋
Jay Sangeet ❤
What a project! Very cool. (You know they make midi sequencers now, right?)😎
Next - a midi to piano-roll converter. (I'm not making fun, I'm in awe!)
That's a really great sounding orchestrion. Really nice voicing and arrangement. How do you get the rolls made? Is that some sort of diaphragm-reed rank up on top? And presumably that's free reeds on that rank underneath? Anyway, great job; now I have to check out more of your work.
And watching that quad reciprocating air pump behind the wheel is mesmerizing. I built what I call a radial ball pump, which is a similar idea but uses three 7" rubber balls arranged around a crankshaft, to pump up the reservoir of my raucous beating-reed organ.
For some reason the first second i saw this i thought it was just an invisible man playing
Oooh, how much of this is air vs electric motors? Are those bellows behind that wheel, just for the accordion section?
What a marvel.
Great machine although I have a feeling that the "accordeon notes" (is that the correct description?) that came in at the end were rather out of time - an air leak or is the roll imperfectly punched for those notes?
I want so much to have a recording of this as-is, but with the mandolin bar on past the second part
Маща.👍
Now I'm puzzling over how the recording device for the paper roll worked.🤔
