Karma Chameleon played on a Mechanical Organ

  • Blauwtje was used to collect money on the streets from the early 1920's - street busking with the Draaiorgel is a big part of Dutch culture. It started life as a '49 Key Marenghi Organ’, but within the first few years of its life, it was totally rebuilt! When Organ Builder Carl Frei invented ‘Bourdon’ pipework in the 1930’s, it was the ‘must have sound’ and many Organs were rebuilt including Blauwtje.
The Organ was rescued in the 1980’s and rebuilt by Johan Verbeeck. Blauwtje’s distinctive carved front was redecorated by famous Organ artist Feite Posthumus. After a further 30 years playing on the streets of Holland, Blauwtje was bought by James Dundon in 2011 and imported to the UK. Much work has been done to the organ including the addition of new pipework and redecoration.

I don't know which puts me more in awe. That a century old mechanical machine has been restored to sound this good, or the fact that someone spent weeks transforming Karma Chameleon into punch cards so the organ can play it.

i will tell you what puts me more in awe.
It is not this century old mechanical machine having been restored.
It is not the person or persons punching out the cards to play this song.
It is the fact that humanity somehow came up with the idea to build this, to entertain other people.
I think that is a much better way to spend your time on this planet than to try and bomb another people off the face of this planet.

how can people, as in human beings,,, not a specific race or kind but just people, human beings.... who are capable of coming up with this kind of stuff also be crazy enough to think that they should bomb other people off the face of this planet....
anyways, that is just an opinion.
Wonderful apparatus. Wish i had the expertise to build one.

i wonder if people back then hearing a song like this would think it was stupidly simple or if they would be blown away by it because its too advanced. or maybe it would just blend in.

I can´t believe how amazing this sounds, one of my favourite songs no less.
I´m a history lover and always had a fascination for street organs but had no idea they were a Dutch tradition. Studying in Groningen in 2005, I was walking through the market when I saw a huge one with countless little moving figurines. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me!

Any chance we'll see more of these amazing covers in the future?
Not to get demanding, but as a suggestion, I've always wanted to know what the song "Dixie" by Harmonium would sound like on an instrument like this.
Big kudos for actually making the cards, I know MIDI conversions are common but it's nice to see the entire original system running. Perhaps one could adapt a laser cutter to make the cards semi-automagically.

Does the air through the punch cards go directly to the pipes. or does it control valves that control the air to the pipes?

    • @unique4entertainment
      @unique4entertainment  Місяць тому +3

The air controls valves that then control air to the pipes. There is a primary and secondary relay system to make sure enough air is created to play and sustain each note. Thanks for your interest.
