Excuse me but....King Neptune is not always the Captain of the ship. That honor goes to the oldest (meaning the one who crossed the equator before anyone else in the crew) Shellback. Waaay back in 1966 my father had the honor of being King Neptune since he had initially crossed the equator in 1936. If memory serves, the Captain of the ship was a pollywog.

I was an MP in the Marine Corps. From time to time in the corps there will be a “mess night”. It has a Marine Corps ball vibe but it’s done for basically no reason and has a bunch of weird traditions.
One of them was to mess with the CO’s meal in some way. Since we were MP’s, we sprayed it with OC spray before it was served to him. And it didn’t have a dye in it so he didn’t know until he ate it. Needless to say, Tabasco sauce is probably a more desirable condiment.

Nicholas Jackson. Don't worry about it. These things are fun. What they call Blood Striping is called Frocking in the Navy. And not everyone gets to hit you. Only those who are already your new rank and above. So the higher you go, the fewer are actually hitting you.
All of these contests and duels, I never had to participate in any of these, never even heard of any of my other fellow sailors doing these.
The Shellback and Neptune's Court is when you cross the Equator for the first time, and it's voluntary. No one will force you to do it. But it does give a little bit of stories to tell you kids. Even if you don't though, you'll still have lots of stories.

Bought a case of beer for the squad, "clowned" on someone who shouldn't be clowned on, "borrowed" something our unit needed but didn't want to have to wait for paperwork to go through "channels". 99.9% of the time the others knew what was going on. In the Old Guard, 3rd U.S. Infantry, I was an 11C (Infantry Mortar-Man) part of Gun’s Platoon. We fired the ceremonial Howitzer styled cannons to honor fallen heroes and visiting dignitaries.
Anyway every year as far back as anyone can remember, on the night of the first snowfall of the year. The lower enlisted men would scale the low rock wall that surrounds Arlington Cemetery and sneak across the cemetery to “the tomb”(Tomb of the Unknowns). There we would have an epic snowball fight with the Tomb guards! Who would also have several of their lower enlisted standing by in the Tomb office waiting!!

The pillow fights are dangerous because of the concussion issue. The pill has a lot of mass and when you swing it is like a flail. In my opinion blood week should not be banned yes them closely monitor hazing so he doesn't get out hand. This responsibility Falls upon the senior members. For example, you cannot initiate someone unless you have gone through the initiation. My lieutenant and my wings and then everyone that was my senior punch them we bonded. @@perdedor3571 You're confusing "tacking on" with blood wings. Blood wings, the offical act of slamming any wings (traditionally jump wings, but has also been applied to AFSC wings, any flight or crew wings, as well as any badge) into the chest of an Airman. This was banned in the late 90s by the DOD in a memorandum on August 28, 1997, DoDI 6490.4 The ban that has come and go more times than you can count, is the act of Taking On...which is just a tap, supposed to be a punch, to make sure new stripes stick. That is not what it called, blood wings. Problem is with blood wings in the USAF...almost every tech school or specialty school class, claims that it was JUST banned...so they do it in "secret". It has not been allowed officially since '97, after a public incident by the Marines (which came out again in '07 I believe). Has never been officially allowed since. The continued arguments have been about what was claimed to be the more gentle Tacking On.

One of my favorite traditions from being in the field artillery: when ever we got an FNG in the battery, they would be allowed to fire their first shell as an artilleryman. Upon the recoil and breach opening on the gun, the new gunner would swab the bore as fast as he could, then shove his face into the breach before the bore cleared of smoke and take a deep breath filling their lungs with artillery smoke. After a successful exhale they are presented their used primer. We in the artillery called this "muff diving for wolf pussy"

We did not enter either wars when the Axis was at a standstill and overextended. The Axis became that way with the introduction of additional fronts being opened by the US military backed by allies. Exception is WW1 which was all standstill/trench warfare and even in that situation, the tide turned with the introduction of fresh forces vs. exhausted forces. The first Gulf war was was led by the United States which not only provided the majority of the forces, but also lead the formation of the coalition and did not "wait until everyone fought themselves to a standstill, and do the minimum of fighting to claim you won". I'm not in, but I was once given a coin from a Chief Petty Officer for making sure his evening went well with his (I'm assuming) wife. It was strange at first, but looking back it's pretty cool to receive one. Definitely won't be busting it out though.

Sometimes you watch these kinds of videos and wonder if the narrator is/was in the military. Then she said "good thing they had their PT belts on". Yeah, that's legit. The PT belt protects against the flu, anxiety, tooth decay, erectile dysfunction, rabid rhinos, bullets, sand in the crotch, seasickness, airsickness, landsickness, depression, snakes, narcolepsy and AIDS.

I'm a canadian army cadet, one of our traditions is at the end of the year, we have a 3-4 hour parade called annual cadet review. One thing MY corps does is the revewing officer (usually a lt col or major) Will give the newest member of the corps thier tunic doing speeches, he will then present a speech to the whole corps and parents, most of them are akward but fun all the less.

As an 18 year-old USMC E-3 in 1987, I crossed the equator at the international date line, went through the ceremony and became a Golden Shellback. When I got to King Neptune, he asked, "What are you?" I mistakenly said, "I'm a wog," so I had to go back to the beginning. Fortunately, one of my squid (Navy) friends who was already a Golden Shellback extended his shillelagh (a length of firehose with one end bound by 550 cord to form a handle, which I had to hold with my teeth) and led me back to the front. This time, when the chief asked, "What are you?," I yelled "A shellback!" Congratulations!

If you do blood wings or any form of in the navy is almost gone away now because you get send to captains mast and can be discharged from the military if the captain feels it is needed. And neptune's court is much different than that now, much more PC
