Human Nature IMO it’s about the macho motorcycle mindset. I’ve owned scooters and 600 Suzuki’s. I’ve learned one thing about the sport of motorcycling, ride what you want and don’t be swayed by idiotic opinions. Younger guys have trouble being their own man and want to go with the flow of the group.

Think its due to Motorcycles in the US being toys in the public mindset. A scooter isn't "Fun" or attractive compared to a Fireblade or a Harley, so people refuse to see past the first impression and find the utility and comfort something like this brings.

@Greg Myers ....."I want to see more big scooters on the highway" ... and Honda, with their DCT offerings, (to a lesser extent for commercial trucks, the Allison) an "old fashioned" gear trans, not a CVT, that shifts itself is proving most manual transmissions are obsolete.

So here’s my story. I bought a brand new Kymco in 2009. It was 50cc. I loved it. $6 in fuel per week, commuting 50 km everyday. I put 8400 kms in the first and only year I owned it. I found myself longing for a clutch, and gears. So I saved $900 and went through a motorcycle training course. Then I sold my trusty Kymco, which didn’t give me a lick of trouble ever, and acquired a Honda CM450. Then a Honda CB750. Then a Honda GL1100 Goldwing. Then a Kawasaki GTR1000 Concours. Then a Suzuki B-King1300. Then a Honda F6C Valkyrie, and finally a Suzuki DR650. I now have 46000 on the DR, and am thinking about maybe a new Goldwing, perhaps a Honda VFR1200... who knows what my next bike will be. All thanks to a little Taiwanese 50cc scooter.

@@j.thomas7128 I miss that bike, but also I don’t. It just had so much power that I could never legally use. And the gears were super tall; you could make 160 kph in first gear. When I first bought it, the sales person suggested that I just leave it in third all the time, and treat it like an automatic 😂. Anyway, I didn’t fit comfortably on it, and threw a lot of money at it in moto gp style rear-sets and a Corbin seat, in an attempt to get comfy on it. Eventually I traded it in for a dual sport.

@@caryd67 Thank you. Tall gears and more power than i would ever need are things i can live with. Hearing that it has enough torque to ride third gear all day is welcoming. I think when a lot of people hear 'Taiwan' or that something is made in Taiwan they think sweatshops and they think of all the stories about poor production quality they heard about Chinese products. If that's you, I'd urge you to do some research on the country (or region of China, if you're Chinese). Taiwan has the 22nd highest GDP in the world, ahead of Sweden and Belgium, with a relatively small population of only 25 million people. Their industry focuses on high tech, with big companies you might recognize like HTC, ASUS, MSI and countless others. If they're going to be good at anything, they're going to be good at scooters - everyone in Taiwan rides a scooter, they love them.

They are not a new company, they were originally part of Honda but split from them in the early 1960's and started the Kwan Yang Motor COmpany, hence KYMCO. They not only continue to make engines for Honda, but other companies, including BMW! They make a couple of smaller bikes, similar to a Gromm or the Kawi 125, but are less expensive since they are manufactured in Taiwan. My Kymco GT200i took over 50k kilometers of daily commuting, fun runs from southern Quebec into Vermont/upstate NY/New Hampshire, Saturday rides about Quebec, and one or two ventures onto gravel. Blew out a belt when I neglected the service interval. Ate a stator about 40km in. Survived until I decided to move up to a BV 350 and--after a winter in hibernation--wouldn't start up when I checked it before posting the Craigslist ad. Gave it to the first guy to call for "free to pick up".
For all I know, the guy rezzed it and it's tootling around somewhere still.

I had a Kymco in my early 20s. I loved it. You’re talking to someone who is literally AFRAID of motorcycles and bikes. I’m afraid to be on them, around them just no. But I bought the Kymco from my dad’s friend and rode it around the neighborhood until the tires got bad. I was making 8$ at the time and couldn’t afford to fix it. So my dad sold it. But I’m looking in to getting another to drive back and forth to work and school. I really did enjoy mine

I bought a Kymco Spade 150 used and have put around 2k miles on it in the past 9 months. It hasn't given me anything but reliable and fun riding. That being said, I totally agree with you on getting parts if and when needed. I like to buy consumables up front (like brake pads/shoes, gaskets for often serviced areas, ect...) and nobody aftermarket makes shoes yet. I've been waiting for months to get them along with a few other things from our local dealer and that is the only thing that would make me hesitant to buying another Kymco in the future. I hear it's easier to get parts for the scooters and quads though. I really hope Kymco USA can get their stuff together soon, because they make a great product but everything needs parts over time and makes a boat anchor if you can't repair it.

But out on the Interstate accelerating from 65 MPH from behind a slow Semi to 90 MPH was effortless. And STILL had power to spare at 90! KYMCO builds A1 quality stuff. The repair history proves that. They had like 2 models in their history that were a bit glitchy, but *overall* they are VERY reliable. I don't own one, I don't sell them, and I am not paid by anyone to say that! KYMCO is a portmanteau for Kwang Yang Motor Company.
I've been living in Taiwan for the past two years now... everybody and their grandmothers gets around on two wheels. Even dogs in Taiwan ride scooters!
When I arrived in Taipei, I picked up a 1995 Kymco Freeway 125 with 14,500km on the odometer (it only counts up to 99,999km). I rode all around Taiwan on it, and put 30,000km (18,641 miles) on it in two years. I had to replace plenty of things on it due to age, wear and tear, but it never once left me, my wife and dog stranded. We've even been over the Central Cross-Island Highway, which reaches a height of 3,200 meters (10,498 feet), six times.
On one occasion, we were riding through Taroko Gorge, which starts at sea level and runs 54 miles to the He Huan Shan area, which is over 10,000 feet. All the dudes riding cruisers or sports bikes gave me a thumbs up as they rode past me and my wife, who was holding our medium-sized dog in her lap. Even with passengers, a big camping backpack and two trunks stuffed with food, the Kymco Freeway held its own on that busy, narrow, winding road. When we got to the gas station, we definitely got more looks than the guys with expensive bikes... which goes to show you, it's not WHAT you ride, it's HOW you ride.
I finally had to give up Little Kymie this week. Age, riding fast and up one too many steep mountain roads finally took its toll. She was blowing plumes of blue smoke and burning up a quart of motor oil every five days, and I didn't feel like spending money at the mechanic when it could be better put towards a new bike.
After test riding a 150cc Sym, PGO Hotshot, and Kymco G5, I bought the Kymco for its superior handling and acceleration.

Kymco makes a good scooter but I have to go with the burgman of i had to choose. I had a 400 for a little over a year and might be picking up a 650 next week. If recommend a 400 of you're looking for something that can occasionally go on the freeway but mostly use it for around town commuting. My only gripe with the kymco is that is was barely not as comfortable as the burgman. Still a great little motor bike though

The truth behind Kimco is they come from a country where it is still more common for people to ride motorcycles and scooters than it is to have a car there's more motorcycles on the road in Taiwan then in the United States almost everyone rides a motorcycle or knows how to ride a motorcycle in Taiwan they are actually really great bikes they are worldwide the number one manufacturer of motorcycles worldwide when it comes to reliability and the reason I don't own one is cuz I don't like working on my own stuff I'm not a motorcycle mechanic I can do some things but not a lot and just because they're Asian and they're not Japanese most places especially shops that work on motorcycles file these bikes under the Chinese bike category and they say they won't even touch the damn things that is why I do not own a Kymco otherwise I would gladly on a Kymco because I currently have a 2014 Suzuki Burgman 400 which 0 to 40 50 miles an hour my Burgman is quicker but that's 750 cc Kymco at Kimco the he just rode is way way more comfortable out on the highway then my Burgman 400 short-term the Burgman has no problem and I even do lots of Fairly Long Highway rides every now and then up to about 90 maybe a hundred miles at a time out on the highway in my Burgman does great still gets 55 to 60 miles per gallon average fuel economy out on the highway but yeah Kymco is a great manufacturer everyone who I know who has a Kymco never complains but a lot of the people I know who own gym cuz also are mechanically inclined which I am I just don't like working on my own stuff but they do like working on their own stuff and they do like tinkering around with things which is part of why they love their Kim Co because realistically if you have an issue with the Kymco and you are capable enough of diagnosing it and knowing that you need to replace this part it is actually really easy to take the broken part off of your Kim Co and take it into a motorcycle service center that sells parts and actually cross reference a part off of another motorcycle that looks like it is the exact same part generally Kawasaki is where the crossover comes from when you fix a Kymco in the US but there's a few other manufacturers that are basically using the exact same Parts as Kim Co and the reason that that 750cc touring scooter was around $7,000 brand new is the import tariffs coming from Taiwan are very low as well as it is not expensive in Taiwan to manufacture and assemble products like it is in many other parts of the world and still have them be of a good high quality in Taiwan the people working at Kimco are also the people riding Kim Co and they would love to have a good quality product so when they manufacturer of these vehicles the people who are manufacturing them try to do it to an extremely high-quality standard because they know that one day that bike could possibly be theirs and they would much rather not have problems with it plus they know it could quite easily be there near were buying the bike and they don't want their neighbor complaining about a motorcycle that they help to assemble and saying what a piece of crap it is in fact when it comes to your bang for your buck even most Chinese bikes are really high quality considering the parts that are usually unreliable on an actual Chinese bike are parts that are inexpensive for a place with good quality parts and you can buy a knockoff of any Honda that is 400 CC's or less as a Chinese bike that as long as it is a Honda model that has been around for 8 years or longer such as the Honda Metropolitan 50cc scooter those are 2000 brand new in the US or there is a company called TaoTao and they are the company that actually manufactures the engines for Honda and they also make knock-off bikes of Honda specially the 50cc scooter segment the engine itself is essentially a Honda engine it is a Honda Clone Engine and you can go and buy from dealerships depending on the state in the city you live in one of these bikes assembled and ready to go and delivered for $750 and then throw tax on top of it making it may be up to $800 out the door and delivered to your house and another $300 and parts and essentially what you are writing is a Honda Metropolitan but you have just spent a lot less on it and the warranty on the TaoTao scooters is the same as on Honda scooters in most cases you can get the Toto for less than 600 bucks and when you include the money in buying the few necessary parts to upgrade to the higher-quality parts you can get into a TaoTao that's going to last you as long as the Honda Metropolitan will for usually less than half the price of the Honda the one advantage is you can take the Honda to any motorcycle shop and they will work on it where is the TaoTao is a Honda and if you have those upgrade Parts on it you can actually refer to the Honda owners manual from 8 years back to the year model of what the TaoTao is and everything matches up to be the same the only reason you pay a lot less for the Chinese bike in the case of TaoTao is you can buy them Factory Direct Plus they are mass-producing them in such numbers that a lot of the parts are current Parts being made for bikes that are new models or existing models currently on the road for other bigger manufacturers so they can manufacture those parts at a really low cost and when they are making their own bikes they can actually put however much profit margin into the bike they want but they choose to go ahead and put a low profit margin in people in the states that say that Chinese bikes are tile on these bikes are crap I remind them that the primary modes of transportation for China and Taiwan are still motorcycles and everyone in those countries rides and those motorcycles are way less expensive and generally the same quality or only slightly lower quality than the bikes that they are copying.

...first... fucking paragraghs, dude. Second; a honda metro is not the same as a gy6 50 scooter. The gy6 is loosely based off an old ass honda engine. The metro and ruckus use the same engine except the metro has EFI, but they aren't gy6 bikes and make sligtly more power. Gy6 50s are also bigger bikes. The only gy6 50 that is the same size is probably the Buddy, which also comes in a 125 or 150.

i used to have a Kymco Gran dink 50cc scooter. I loved driving it, it was stable and usable. (not fast by any means... because scooter laws in NL kinda suck).
but the thing i like most that i wish my Piaggio Mp3 500 had from it: the mirrors. the mirrors on the Gran dink were located in a great place and offered so much visibility compared to what i have now. (and yes i drive the Mp3 500 because i have yet to get my motorcycle license (working on that atm though, had to wait till i was 24 to get to be able to drive on everything at once, this was available with a car license because laws)).
