I was a little kid back then but I remember Gorman Thomas, Mike Norris, and Bruce Sutter were very common looks with seemingly the vast general public if I do recall
THAT'S another Pete Rose record that will probably never be broken. Starting at five different positions in five different All-Star games. I'd bet a cool mil, confidently, that it NEVER happens again, ever. And Bob Feller retired with 266 wins after having missed FOUR of his prime seasons (3 and in his age 25 season he only pitched in 5 games) from 22 years old to 26 - because of military service in WWII. To give you an idea of how great a career he MIGHT have ended up with....at age 22 he won 25 games with 28 complete games and 260 strikeouts. At age 26 when he finally came back - he won 26 games with 348 strikeouts. The man missed what probably would have been his GREATEST seasons and at the pace he was following - you could add close to ONE HUNDRED more wins to his total and probably another strikeouts. And as his arm aged, and he wasn't the fireballer he'd once been, he STILL found ways to win. Feller was a great one. I would have loved to see all those guys from his era play today and have the added advantage of modern equipment, modern training facilities and modern stats. It speaks to how serious the war was in Europe and the Pacific - that guys like Feller and Ted Williams were being called upon to serve. Teddy ballgame was a great fighter pilot and instructor as well. AND he fought in Korea. Old Teddy Ballgame lost about 5-6 seasons of stats between those two wars.
Many many served without thinking twice about it. It was the greatest generation. One reason was their values, principals, morals and love of country. Not sure if we'll ever see that again. Certainly not today's youth. Too busy taking selfies shouting look at me look at me!
Both the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals were screwed on the First Half - Second Half Division Winners in the Baseball Playoffs. More the Reds than anyone else in having Baseball’s Best Overall Record in 1981 and not getting into the Playoffs.
What a shame man. J.R. Richard was a GREAT pitcher on a sorta bad team. He could have been a HOFer had he not had the stroke. Two strikeout titles of over 300 strikeouts in both seasons, an ERA title AND he had a 10-4 record with a 1.90 ERA before his 1980 season, and ultimately his career, was cut short. He never pitched another inning of MLB. Sleep in peace J.R. EDIT - and did they actually take the Star Trek theme and use it as the theme for the All-Star game that year??? Cool.
Such a great time in this country i was 12 years old and i do remember this game!!
Great salute to J.R. Richard, one of the big what if’s in baseball history.

Gary Carter = Only player in league history with 2 hr's in an all star game and 2 hr's in a world series game.
And with 2 different teams, correct?
Don't like the unis the White Sox have.

48:26 "and if baseball is on trial could you have a better character witness than Pete Rose to lead it off?"

At 13:03, from an NBC News Update, the Major League Baseball was backwards.
My Mets were so bad that our representative was a bench player..Joel Youngblood. Great guy..awesome role player
@ 13:38 you can hear the star trek tng theme playing in the backround 7 years before the show came out.
I hear it now
Judging by the year that'd be TMP theme, TNG reused it for their intro
Star Trek came out in the 60s. This is 81.
I could listen to Tony and Joe all day
This game had everything except a full season.
To skip ahead to the introductions, go to 19:13.
Back when Jack Morris couldn't strike out anyone.

where is Rickey
Once Carter won the MVP that night, his days in Montreal were numbered. It's all about the dool-lars Canadian & US.
I think Gary Carter's the only player to win multiple ASG MVP's for 1981 and 1984.
Garvey won it twice also
Mike Trout won back to back MVP's
Willie Mays won two too
Parker looks like an overstuffed canary.
Sounds Like Drew Morphett
Who were the royals playing at 1:31? I don’t recognize that uniform….can’t be the cubs
Maybe the rangers?
39:40 legend
Ha! Rose Morris! It's a guitar joke.
Why wasn’t the Royals coaching staff the coaches for the game?
I think if had do something with strike and wanted the fans have something to cheer about since it was in Cleveland
1:34 Any has a idea on the song title?
