Over a seven year period from ages 30-36, Schmidt slashed .281/.387/.561, won 3 MVPs, 6 Gold Gloves, and 6 Silver Sluggers and was a World Series MVP.
    For non traditional stats:
-His lowest OPS+ during that stretch was 149, the only year he didn't lead the league in OPS+
-Led all third basemen in Total Zone Runs twice and was top-4 four times
-Led the league in WAR once and was top-5 six times (for position players only, he led the league in WAR twice and was top-4 6 times)

When I was a kid Schmidt was the best player in baseball
He is the greatest all-around third baseman in baseball history
Equal to Matthews offensively and his better defensively ✌️
Bunting down the third base line was not much of an option with Schmidt at Third
No disrespect meant for Brooks: Robinson was indeed the best defensive at third base over his career.
Or ditto Brett : He’s great f course - But his good medium power plus batting titles as great as all that is
Doesn’t outdo the combo of lots of walks and lots of homers of Matthews and Schmidt.

Grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70s... hated Scmidt. Lived in Philly late in his career and began appreciating he was the best all-around third baseman in history. Ended up living in the same town as him in Florida now, see him out places from time to time. Fun fact tying in Philly fans insanity, late in his final season I'm at a game. Phillies ending bad season, won't make playoffs, losing late in the game. Schmidt pops up, out, and the Philly fans booed. Greatest 3B ever, greatest Phillie player ever, and they booed him for popping up late in a blowout game at the end of a bad season.

@@larrycopeland2413 Yes, and it was in 1988 his final real season. As I correctly stated, and also correct the Phils were deep in last place. Wow, how sad your life must be to be patrolling comment sections waiting for chances to say someone is wrong. Congrats - you can google but not comprehend. BTW... I lived downtown on Walnut St. Used to take the Broad Street train to the Vet after work. Often get there mid-game and box seats could be had for a few bucks. That game I was on the first level above the field by the visitor's dugout, front row on the railing with a buddy, drinking a Schmidts and eating a soft pretzel.
