Your deffo missing out with delivery James, I've done hundreds of deliveries, especially since covid, I started doing a video and cheap, pound a mile, pay on delivery in covid, people love it, you rock up and it's rare they even look at it, totally different people from the turn up at yours and spend 3 hours checking everything and you virtually never hear from them again as well, they've literally bought the car via the video, it's definitely kept me going. Only draw back is say maybe 5 am start and doing 400 miles round trip.
I’m not a car dealer, I’m a firefighter actually. I watch and love all of your videos, specially the ones of the 3 of you chatting. I learn loads about cars from you and it does make me think about getting into selling some cars. This for me is the most random thing I do 😂
Fantastic discussion, I can relate to all the issues you’ve experienced. Specially Joe, with First Response Finance, out of 3 deals this year, 2 of there deals were unwound. We refused to pay the refund on the last one. This 6 months fault free is total nonsense, faults can easily develop after purchase, we only need to prove the fault wasn’t present at the time of sale.
Great that all 3 of you telling the good and the bad of the bussiness . Telling the world that its not all profit profit profit . Great video ( only half way through )
I had a removal business for 20 years, i got rid of it recently, the biggest problem i had all these years was getting good staff, todays kids dont want to work and when they do they want you to pay £200 a day for doing very little, glad i got rid, so i understand where James is coming from
Cost savings. 1. Bin ebay motors 2. Minimise other subscriptions 3. Weigh up paying for delivery v salaried delivery 4. Buy solar panels and fill your roofspace and export energy. 5. Cheapen labour. 6. Negotiate harder with finance companies. Mrs used to work for first response, she laughed when she heard their name, she hates them. 7. Vet customers (sounds mad but true) 8. Weekly insta shorts showing nice stock. 9. Go premium on branded, easier to be premium and go down rather than car supermarket and go up. My mate works for motorclass in wigan, they always buy high end special edition motors, trim levels, paint colours etc. Could try that.
Brilliant you three connecting as I mentioned awhile ago you and James collaborating has worked and now you have Dave who is also very good and fits into the group nicely and then you can start having guests and widening the group to chat about anything relating to yourselves and the businesses
Good one guys very interesting! I never understood why folk can go back 6months later and maybe done a fair few miles in that time to think you sold a dodgy car! Cars have wearing parts! I bought a minted 60k Miles 14 year old transit and the clutch slave cylinder went after a couple of months I felt guilty phoning up the garage that sold me it I had a 3 month warranty guys garage was miles away he sent the part to my local village garage and paid the labour costs! He is a Romanian Garage owner!!
James on cheaper stuff just keep stum on warranty, I find hardly anyone asks on cheapies, if they do come back then yes try to help, but saying you've got a warranty only encourages them, but the other day a guy called on a punto at 1200 quid (!) after 2 mths, back box was blowing, I said there was no warranty due to price, but I'm happy to send 50 quid to help out, a new back box, trade is 38 quid. I find it's the best way to sort things.
Absolutely fascinating insight into the running of the car business. It really goes to show it isn't all sunshine. like how James went off to sell a car ! keep up the good work...Looking forwards to Dave's new pitch, although its currently under raps. Joe's idea for buying each other a car would be a great idea, it may push James to utlise every car park space!
52 yrs in motor trade, app to dp ,thing with staff..pay them well and on time, treat with respect and make them part of the "family". Third party warranty always worked for me, whether we did the repairs or customer takes to his own mechanic
I gave up fixing cars and motorbikes especially for family as anything that happens after you first fix it is "something you done" even 5 years later, I tell them now I don't fix things except my own collection
I used to do welding and fixing cars for people who was friends of my family in my spare time and started getting to much as people was telling other people and I got sick of people experiencing repairs really cheap and when a job gets more work than it started and don't want to pay more or something else goes wrong a later on which had nothing else to do with so I gave up can't be dealing with anyone take it to a garage I tell anyone who asks me no so I don't blame you at all mate
Great listen/watch , started watching on YT and then carried on via the Spotify podcast in the car. So much better than listening to the radio. Please do more of these.
Fantastic colab pod guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I've followed all 3 of your channels separately from day dot and love all your content so to get all 3 of u on one pod is the mutts nuts...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It must be good 4 u 3 to blow off steam to each other and support each other with your issues and hopefully help each other out... Very interesting video lads, I'm glad I don't offer finance as it seems to me the finance companies are struggling and hitting the dealers hard to try and minimise their losses. The job certainly isn't getting any easier is it!
Like being a fly on the wall listening in to car dealers thoughts. In the old days car finance companies would have to chase the guy who took out the finance contract, reposses the vehicle, take the debtor to court and potentially take the hit on any loss. Now they have found a way to mitigate the risk and hassle by getting the car dealer to take any loss. Basically they want their cake and eat it!!
Thanks.for doing these pods guys - I'm very much like James, working on my own and can completely relate to all your dilemmas and quandaries. It feels like I've got mates that talk the same talk I would if I had that luxury! Please keep them going.
Hi joe, just watching your new Dealer Chat. I honestly cant believe what you all are saying about fixing cars that you have sold and the things that you are doing for your customers . Lads you should bye a car of a dealer her in Ireland and see what answer you will get of them if you are looking to get something fixed after like 6 month.
Great podcast fellas 👏 in answer to the shorter video this is my thoughts. When I'm buying a car or a motorcycle that's what I'm buying I'm not buying where the vehicle is being sold from so for me it doesn't matter if it's a fancy showroom or a garage at a part time traders house etc. So long as the vehicle checks out and all relevant paperwork is present I'm happy to go ahead with the deal. Not everyone thinks like me I know but that's my opinion
The problem with used car warranty is the name. People relate it to a manufacturers warranty where all defects are fix to maintain the car to it's original standard, almost no exclusions except wearable parts. So that's what people relate to a used car warranty. Perhaps it should be named a guarantee or limited repair order. The real problem though is in managing expectations at the point of sale. It would be better if a used car came with a list of all the issues on the car and the customer agreed to that condition, and then agreed to what they will be allowed to get repaired. It really is hard, and i try to do that with my prepurchase inspections. Safety is of course a must, but outside of that you have to accept wear and tear unless it's marketed as a vehicle with no faults, and the vehicle must match. 3 moths warranty is generous enough to get to know the vehicle. But 8 months and an engine blows, well bad luck unless you can prove it was knowingly sold with an engine ready to blow. Anyway, good chat guys, love it.
Joe you of all people have the answer because you have a camera man following you round. When my car go into Mercedes they video everything they do so that if there is a discrepancy sometime later, they have it on camera, but it was perfect at the time of the MOT or service or PDI whatever you Joe already do some of that. It’s just a question of getting all your texts to wear a head camera when they’re underneath the vehicle or road testing it.
What determins your wealth ,is its not what you earn its what you spend!! . with regards making money ,the wealth comes by volume of sales . These car shops has cracked it by its mass turn over
I'd be checking cam timing bud on that fiat if it's just had a belt, 10k seems very low to have bottom end problems, easy to find out anyway, it'll be knocking like mad on bottom end if that's the case.
Great video. I’d tell the finance company to bring the car back and you’ll happily refund the money they want. But as they sold it without you knowing they’ve shot themselves in the foot. Re warranties I’ve been running my garage repair business here in rural Suffolk for 34 years now and I sell a few select cars under £5000 . Every car goes out with a full Mot if under 6 months a full service and timing belt kit if it’s not been done recently plus a valet and a warranty with Handler protect. Either a 12 month or 18 month warranty. On my receipts I say if they have a claim and the warranty company won’t cover it under a warranty they can’t expect me to cover it either. Which everyone signs accepts and I’ve never had an issue with anyone. So surely using a warranty company is the only way to go compared to a self warranty because as I say if the warranty company won’t cover an item then we the traders shouldn’t have to cover it either.
Guys, as an independent automotive consulting engineer any engineers report on finance car should be split cost bewteen both parties and also independent, finance companies use ACE as they are considerd "puppets to he principle", not independent
I think you can sell anything James with your set up, it looks great, genuine buyers tend to look at the car and that's it, these who start to look round at your set up aren't really genuine buyers, rather than trade ASAP just give em a fortnight on auto trader, then trade off if no bites.
I'd be taking a full vehicle walk round, under, inside and out video of every motor before a sale even when a motor comes back for a fix every last thing would get a vid and customer would know from day one, sure it would help stop a lot of customer BS..
I've worked in the Motor trade since 1978 and im retiring in 4 weeks and the reason is because customer expectations now are unrealistic and a lot of them are liars so that's it for me a nice relaxing time to come good luck to you guys i take my hat off to you but i am done with it.
Sometimes you just have to loose (sometimes a lot) but flip that money into another one and track that money in the next few cars, makes you feel better anyway, I'm actually working on 2 that I've had since 2019,been parked up all that time, it's either scrap (450 pair) or mot, paint, springs, usual stuff and then 1295 each, both 2009 cars, that's like 14 plates when I bought them, I've just blown 2k on two others, but you've got to move on, trouble is these days you can have 3k in something with a nasty fault and it's like 400 quid on FB, cruel.
I just had to reject a car I’ve had for 24 days, the wiring loom in the boot burnt out. I asked the dealer to replace it and all I got was we’ll take the car and sort it when we sort it and you can’t have a courtesy car so I just rejected it and walked away.

Ive got a quasgui on a 15 plate with a crunchy box, was very surprised
A diesel noise in idle with the Barchetta is often a faulty timing Variator

The right to reject is different from the requirement for dealers to fix cars.
Expectations of buyers are lifted up by people who act as professionals but in actual effect are not. Usually media type experts.
omg joes nose looks like the emoji nose lol...love ya work guys
Thanks 😳
You will always get people trying it on. They know the laws and play on your good nature.
