Thank you for this video - it was very helpful to see how someone seasoned their grill! I got an Auto Komado for Christmas, so now I have to put it together and season it. Blessings! -Kevin :)
I hadn't even heard about this grill until an ad popped up on FB, now I'm obsessed with getting one! Great vid, now I'm ready for when mine gets delivered. 👍🏾👍🏾
I just put mine together yesterday watching your assembly video, can't wait to put meat on today. Great video's Bruh keep up the awesome work thank you.
I purchased the expert grill version and I got it on sale for $158. I couldn't pass up that deal, but I'm hoping it performs as good as this brand. I'll be seasoning it today and throwing on a pork butt tomorrow for my first cook. Great video my friend. Even though I have a different brand, video gave me a lot of useful tips.
Appreciate the time and effort that you invest into your videos. I’m torn between purchasing this grill or a pit boss. Question I have for you, have you encountered any issues with how the temp probe is set up? My understanding is that it can pinch the wire somewhat which has caused some errors and what not.
Hey , Thanks for that heads up. I already have an Auto Kamado but for $224.00 + tax I just ordered a 2nd one. I told a buddy and he also ordered one and got his today, 1 day and free shipping. Mine is coming tomorrow, Monday. Chargriller and Lowes still list them for $450.00. Walmart is a smoking deal. Thanks again.
Hello! Absolutely either would work. If you had a choice between the two, olive oil has a higher temperature smoke point and that would serve you a little better. Thanks for watching!
I had some temp swings when I did my seasoning. Target temp was 350, fan stopped when it reached target temp..but the temp kept rising as high as 422 degrees F. That normal?
It was normal for me too. I’ll say this. It’s definitely a learning curve to this grill. The Good Charcoal that I use is made of Acacia Wood, which burns hotter. I find that I use way less than what I normally put in my regular Akorn. I had a high spike like that too and it took a while to come down. Now with using less charcoal, I find that I will have an initial spike of about ten to fifteen degrees max, and waiting about five to ten minutes, that settles down and it holds steady. My 980 seems to operate the same way. I’ll also say that I only use one firestarter and I just wait for it to come up to temp. As with the regular Akorn, there are several ways to light that thing be it with a couple starters, a chimney, vents wide open etc. On this Auto, I’d just rather be safe and not overshoot and take it’s time coming up. In talking with the Char-Griller Rep at Memphis in May, she said one of the key things is not over activating the charcoal. I had that initial spike on burn in but since making adjustments and learning it with multiple lightings, I feel really comfortable with lighting it and getting a steady temp. I’ll also have a video on this and some other tips coming out. Thanks for watching!
@@OutdoorsWithGeoff thanks for the tip. Also read on the instruction manual that if you have more little pieces of the lump charcoal compared to the large, it will cause a temp spike cause they burn quicker. Now, my question is..I know char griller recommends using lump charcoal, but can you also use briquettes on the auto-kamado? Have you tried using briquettes?
@@raidersinthesky I tried using briquettes in my regular Akorn once. I find that I prefer the lump because that cook generated a lot of ash from the briquettes and I saw it as a possibility of an air flow issue being created. I’ve just stuck with lump since then. I’ve seen where others have had some success with briquettes in their Akorns as well.
Norman thanks for watching. Honestly, I can’t tell a difference in flavor. I thought like with most of these fan operated grills there’d be some flavor loss due to the lack of natural aspiration, but there is none. Still holds temp and is as efficient as my Akorn and Akorn Jr. Top notch in my book.
@@OutdoorsWithGeoff The best way it compares is you can set the temp., put your meat on and go to sleep. It holds temp. within a few degrees for an 18 hour cook very well. I just did 2 9 lb. butts for 18 hrs. and had a ton of charcoal left. It is an awesome cooker. I had two regular Chargriller Kamados that eventually rotted out but they would at times start to run from the desired temp. on a long cook.
Would like to know which you like better. The auto Kamado or the 980? Currently have an original Akorn but it is about 9 or 10 years old so it is time to swap it out. Not sure which route to go??
So let me preface with this. I love the Akorn in general. With hot and fast to low and slow. And pizzas as well. It does everything. The 980 is great too but I get a lot more flavor with either Akorn being over the coals. More smoke flavor as well. It’s just me and Jess so the Akorn suits us fine. But the size of the 980 with larger cooks and family over wins on that side. I always said if I had to take only one with me it’s the Akorn. So I guess the Auto Kamado wins when it comes to that. But the 980 has good flavor too and the size. It holds temps well too just like the Auto. Just burns more coal as expected. The Auto is very efficient with charcoal as is the regular Akorn. I actually have a video coming up talking about this. Thanks for watching Jason!
Nice Vid nice job Geoff I would love to have one of these, but it will have wait work is slow. It would be a safe bet that I will own one of these. I looked at getting the fan unit and required thermo, unit for my Bronco drum and it would be hundreds of over the cost of this Akorn
Thanks for watching. There are many ways that folks do their burn in and seasonings. For this video I went with the directions in the manual from Chargriller.
@@OutdoorsWithGeoff thank you makes sense. As a 3 year passionate owner of a chargriller kamado i wanted to bring this point out . Said that I agree and respect your point that the process you follow is stated in the manual.
