This review plus the model's ranking for 2023 convinced me to buy one and have it shipped to the US, and it does not disappoint at all. It comes to life with much less power than the other Locos I have, runs very smooth, and is very quiet. Now I just need to get some British rolling stock so it can actually do some work and not just run around. Very good stuff, and thanks for the video Sam.

It boggles the mind that they went so above and beyond with the construction, features, and detail, but then didn't bother with machined brass and copper for the safety valve and funnel, and used such matte paint for the finish. They went so above and beyond with all the less visible features most manufacturers slack on to cut costs, but then they didn't put in the effort on those superficial things some other manufacturers do put in the effort because they are so noticeable. I also really love the way they did those screws under the water filler caps, not only is it a very sturdy yet still accessible and well concealed way to attach the body to the chassis, but if you want to pose it with the filler cap off at a water tower or something you can do that.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Рік тому +2

Yeah I agree - and what a difference that construction makes! Don't understand the chimney/safety valve aspects - very strange! Yeah I was dubious about the water filler thing to start with, but it was pretty intuitive!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Quick suggestion that may improve the viewing experience for headphone users: the perceived loudness of music is much greater than that of plain spoken word vocals, so even if they are at the same dB level in your editing package, the vocals will sound way quieter when played back to back. Try increasing the level of the vocals as a way to make sure they all balance out. (I don't know much about trains, but I do know something about audio engineering.) Thanks for all the great videos!

This 1600 pannier tank engine from Rapido UK is an extraordinary model. It is the 1st model ever to be 100% made out of die-cast metal and its pick-ups are smartly engineered which makes them way better than the Hunslet model. Plus, it is worth money well spent. Even though it is an exclusive model Sam but it is still a fantastic model.

You make me wants to buy one... I'm a fan of the Pannier tanks, and short of GWR stock, and Rapido ticks all the boxes. Especially on the good puller side, my Hunslet is a good performer, and that does not surprises me to see this one having good performances.
Well, perfectible finish and plastic parts that would have look better in metal, that the only drawbacks. As is, the price is good for me, even if I consider it on the pricey side. GBP130 would have been better for me, but it's a fair buy as is. I hesitate between the historically accurate one and the GWR what if/preservation. See that next month !

With all the die-cast this can well be a Hornby Dublo locomotive. Looks so good. I don't own a modern pannier tank yet, only a 1979 one from Hornby. If I get one, it has to be this one. A big shame about the scratch though it ruins the illusion for me very poor, aside from that I completely agree with your overall positive review. Detail is amazing. Actually, my old Airfix 14xx also has pick-ups like this. Works well never had any issues.

One criticism about the design/appearance of this model - the front coupling sticks out way beyond the buffers, just like the Oxford N7. This makes sprung buffers pointless, but also means that there is far too big a gap between the front buffer beam and anything it is coupled to when working cab first.

The KESR is my nearest railway, so i am familiar with 1638. I believe that the fictional GWR livery was done in part to run it as Duck during Thomas days.
I think their current stance is more towards real prototype liveries carried by class members rather than these fictional ones, hence why it's now wearing early BR black.
A very nice model, they've really knocked it out of the park. That pickup system is very odd and could do with refinement, but i look forward to seeing if it gets used in other models.

A relatively nice model but at a price that is out of the question for most normal people. I do seriously question the livery as 1638 was built by BR in 1951. Interestingly, the engine was bought for £1300 and this model comes in at over 10% of that price! Makes you think!!!

Nice review Sam, Lovely to see more Manufactures making more Panniers! Personally I don't like them, But they sure are exquisite.

Rapido are really shining. I've always liked a pannier, so thankfully for my wallet, this is out of era for me, but doesn't bode well for my finances when their 45xx & 4575 come out. As always Sam, great review. Cheers

    Hi Sam
Yeah these engines are great I got the NCB Green one and was very impressed with it and yes they are expensive but its actually worth it.
I do agree with you about the commissioned loco's they are taking the mickey with the prices and they are not testing these models properly otherwise they would actually spot problems like the Bachmann 812's are too fast for example. Its actually gotten to a point that as soon as I hear its a retailer exclusive I lose interest immediately, I've found issues with every exclusive I got from Rails of Sheffield which doesn't inspire confidence in their future projects.
Thanks for review as always good luck with the next one :)

It's a shame that such a great quality model isn't representative of any liveried class that actually ran on GWR rails. I can't imagine that too many people model the Kent and East Sussex Railway. I wonder how much it differed from the 2021 class and whether a renumber is feasible (in which case, an etched 20xx plate in the box would be nice), or whether the tooling might form the basis for an upcoming 2021 class release...

Beautiful model and always enjoy your reviews but:
I can't afford anything like this and I don't think it' s expensive. The skill and time just assembling each model, time spent on research etc. etc. How much more would it cost entirely Made in UK?
Just makes me think it is incredible value. :)

For a Rapido steamer that’s not a bad price. I’d definitely pay that. You should see the price for Rapido’s Canadian Hudsons. Oh boy are they pricey but comparable to brass engines.
