- Trash and Recycling in South Korea can be a bit of a challenge if you have never had to do it before. It requires specific bags for your trash and compost. You can not just purchase Glad white trash bags.
Recycling needs to be separated out into specific bins depending on your housing area.
Lastly, there are specific times you can take your trash out. Most places want you to take it out in the evenings. Some even want weekdays only, others will only collect recycling once a week so each area is different. This video gives you a general idea on how its done!
Wow! Your complex is way more organized with their sorting. My complex just has an area where all of the stuff goes in one place. I'm nervous to dispose of my recycling because I'm not sure how to bag it!
some other places, you take your recycling to the road and it goes right next to the garbage. It should have some wire trash cans with pictures over them to show you what goes where and if you dont see a picture than it doesnt recycle. For plastic recycling it is hard. There are so many kinds of plastics such as PET, PE, PS, PP, PVC, and so on.
The problem is that if different kinds of plastics are mixed, they can not be recycled.
Of course, Koreans are confused too, and seems that the apartment complex in this video is just focusing to separate three types and combine the rest of them.
Plastic bags(usually PE), Styrofoam(PS), and PET are the most frequently used plastics in Korea(also in US) in everyday use.
You can take a photo of the label in Korean & translate it to English using Papago or Google Translate apps

what about things that say "other" written under the recycling symbol?? i see this on plastics like chip bags, snack wrappers, ramen packages, etc. Its slightly thicker plastic but not sturdy. Not as thin as a grocery bags but still crunchable plastic. is that vinyl or landfill trash?? im so confused.
Video ideas: we are struggling with right now. Addresses for ordering food and getting delivery to the apartment with Non Korean Credit cards. They seem to want some sort of pin code for coupang.
What do you do for stickers and tape on box deliveries? (Btw, your video has been the most informative out of all of them!)
I never removed any stickers or tape from my boxes (like amazon boxes), I threw them all on the pile as they came. the only thing we did was break them down .
Any cardboard box with tapes and stickers, cannot be recycled in Korea.
In most of the apartment buildings, the contracted cleaners try to remove packaging tapes before the trucks show up for pickup. Or, they give up, too.
And, this is the major issue. Although there is a good intention, the recycling rate is quite poor compared to the recycle pickup rate.
* One has to remove the foreign materials. There is no magical process to separate them in the sorting center.
To recycle cardboards, the tapes and filmed stickers have to be removed.
For the clear PET bottles, remove the films, and, separate clear PET bottles and containers from the non-transparent bottles. But recycle centers prefer the caps back on after cleaning and flattening the bottle. (they sort and clean them again)
They say colored transparent plastic bottle won't be recycled as they cannot extract PET material or it is too low a grade.
Non-clear Plastic containers however should be put in the regular plastic sorting box.
Because many people won't remove the tapes from the boxes, although people are trying for 90% recycling. Koreans simply attempt to recycle more as they won't spend money to fill landfill bags (paid) with the bulky cardboard boxes. But, they are not thorough enough to remove the tapes for 100% recycling.
We need to tell people to remove the tapes from the cardboards before recycling. (the packaging tapes should be put into the landfill bags, not in the plastic bag sorting box)
@@ethan-L on a water bottle, there is a the plastic wrap with the brand of the water bottle. Do I remove it? And after where do I throw the brand name plastic thingy?
@@ryantran5743 Yes, remove the foreign wraps from the clear PET bottles. And those wraps (likely to be so-called vinyl in Korean) are also recyclable to a degree. The non-clear plastics could be made into lower quality products but clear ones are a better material to be made into clothing and others.
I just found out the milk carton packs should now now sorted separated from the long-life packs (juice or soy milk packs with an embedded aluminum lining).
And, these two types should not be mixed with the card boards.
Next, to reduce the confusion, they introduced another logo on the vinyl-laminated papers not to be recycled. They should be thrown with your regular trash bag Jongryangje.
One tip. The styrofoam food containers (like an instant ramen container) can be still saved. Wash and put it directly to the Sun and UV ray dissolves the food stain. Often the discoloration deters proper recycling. But as long as they are cleaned, they are recyclable.
At least, we should try not to get them mixed into the landfill that pollute the aquafer for next generations.

These are things Korean leaders (school, government, don't tell their people by oversimplifying the policy and enforcement in the past, lack of responsibility or shallow bureaucracy - They should repetitively show the ultimate goals of our current effort and what to expect from them.
As someone says, use Google translate and google your inquiry and translate the answers back to Your language. Google search/translate is yet much easier on the computer search than a tiny cell phone screen with limited pop up window features.

This was helpful. I feel like I never see people take out trash in my apartment but I guess they really don’t take it out until certain time frame that’s allowed. Kind of interesting. It still confuses me when it comes to separating garbage and recycle cause I don’t wanna do it the wrong way either 🫣
