A company in Nairobi wants to install bricks made from plastic trash across Kenya’s capital. Could they become a solution for a country where 90% of roads have never been paved? And are roads made from plastic really a good idea?

@SC: It all depends on the base that you lay your paving on. I have seen 30 mm concrete paving laid for car driveways. What worries me with this product is if they are used for building, and there is a fire. The Mont Blanc tunnel fire comes to mind, as well as the Grenfell Tower fire. I wish the lady well with her venture, but, focus needs to be on paving and non building / water uses. Though, if pipes were made, that could be used for wastewater / brownwater systems. As one of the comments above has eluded to, what chemicals and other things are in the plastics that are used? All of these details need to be taken into consideration when deciding what the product can be used for.
There was a video on YT, which showed a Russian enterprise making square paving; not sure of the thickness, but, they were getting tandem tippers to drive over the plastic paving with no ill effects. The weight over a tandem axle group can vary from 16 to 22 tonne, or more, depending on the jurisdiction, and how much overloading occurs!

For those wondering, her business idea was rejected by the Kenyan government. It was proved that there are too many safety risks and that her business does not stop polluting, only encourages it. The US did a test a few back on an all plastic road and it caused a lot of accidents due to the road having a very slippery surface when wet or iced causing the vehicle to have no grip. She is still in business, but she doesn’t have a government contract to replace some of the roads. Also the Kenyan government put a limit on how much of the bricks she can make due to the bricks still being considered trash.

So what do we do with the plastic waste, leave it laying around, there are thousands of applications for waste plastic, the reason it's not used is because it's cheaper making new plastic.
This process does not require cleaning of the plastic and if enough thought is put into it a high temperature furnace that burnt so hot it produces almost no toxins was developed years ago, that would produce the heat required for this product and a further application could be re processing plastic into it's raw form for using again which will be cheaper than producing new plastic.
Negative thinking makes plastic dumps grow, positive thinking reduces the dumps, creates jobs, wealth and better conditions for people to live in, Any help is a positive step forward whereas negative anticapitalist preaching only ensures the starving in having a shorter life.

Your assessment is correct. Notice how the 80s are different from the 90s and the 90s are different from the 2000s and so on and so forth. Every 10 years society changes. It is not just one person, it is actually many people that help make that change happen. This is why no matter what happens, there is always going to be societal change. The corporations and the powers that be, what they like to do is to make sure that they can control the direction of that societal change.
If there were more artists celebrated and bought to the forefront of society, then mark my words, you would not have to wait every 10 years for societal change and innovation. But since there is a concerted effort to control what we actually see, then the only thing people are inspired to do is to consume and simply wait for someone else to change society.

@@rogerhegemier8491 Roger, you’ve made an excellent point; and it’s duly noted. But consider the technical process and concept of recycling plastic trash (which is cluttering and polluting our oceans and environment) and creating bricks to be integrated into driveways, footpaths and other areas of communities. Then consider the originality of the idea and what it must have taken to start the project. Many great ideas started small. I don’t see any manufacturing industries that contribute to the pollution doing anything to prevent it. Here’s a young woman that got some funds together, got some people, started a little factory and made her dream a reality. You obviously aren’t impressed and are quite cavalier and dismissive about it. Perhaps you’re successful and come from a different part of the world where the socio-economic factors and struggles are different. If it fails as a business, at least she gave it a try. If she’s successful it will be wonderful. You seem to find it horrendously primitive or comparatively redundant in today’s world. I, like so many others, merely wished her well. I took great pleasure in doing so. I was raised by a struggling mother who was single and wore many hats to raise five children. You probably come from a comfortable background. Nothing wrong with that. That young woman knows about struggle and sacrifice. I admire her and people like her. They’re all around us and make the world tick, Roger. We are human beings and a kind word, a word of encouragement, a word of hope is sometimes all that’s needed to make people feel good about ourselves. It doesn’t cost the well-wisher anything. There’s no need to get all bent out of shape about it. You were so excited you put nine exclamations and three question marks in ONLY three sentences. That says a lot about you.

If you're wondering, Africa is where the most of Europe's "recycled on paper" wastes go, building up on the existing garbage problem there.
As for the technolgy, well... On one hand plastic tend to produce nasty organic toxins under UV-light, so it is debatable if such technology is actually acceptable (it depends on the source of the plastic they use), on the other hand this process reduces the need to use concrete, where you emit lots of CO2 from lime and from gas heaters, as well as bury carbon in form of plastic instead of just burning it, on the other hand this buried carbon will be replaced by the (slight) increase in plastic production from oil.
As I live in SPb in Russia I'd actually love to see this technology implemented more here if it is proven to be safe from the toxic point of view and if bricks like that won't produce a very fine plastic dust with time, as 1. there're a lot of unpaved pavements, 2. in winter there're a lot of times temperature goes through water-freezing point, which makes concrete pavement bricks and slabs crack very fast (only natural granite and marble tend to hold better), 3. there're a lot of unprocessed plastic waste here too.
