  • Welcome to my channel! I'm Kim and I am an obsessed with winter sowing! Today, we’re diving deep into the Top 3 essential steps for a successful Winter Sowing experience! It is never too early to plan ahead and I want to help you (and me) be a step ahead.
    My Top 3 Steps so that when its time to plant, you are ready and excited!!!
    Step 1:
    Know Your Zone! The foundation of successful winter sowing begins with understanding your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone. It’s as simple as entering your zip code at USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to find out your unique zone! This goldmine of info helps you select plants that'll thrive in your winter climate.
    Step 2:
    Seed-Selecting Time! Whether it’s heading down to your local store, browsing your favorite online seed store, or joining a seed swap, there are plentiful ways to collect your seeds. Harvesting from your own plants? Even better! Just ensure you're choosing seeds that align with your hardiness zone - we wouldn’t want any frost-bitten plants, would we?
    Step 3:
    Container Hunt! Now let’s talk homes for your seeds. Collect various containers suitable for winter sowing. The world's your oyster here - think milk jugs, take-out containers, and more! And guess what? You can snag the essential duct tape, paint pen, and potting mix through the links below.
    Winter sowing is absolutely fantastic, providing an early start for your plants and requiring minimal effort and attention. Trust me, it’s as easy and rewarding as gardening gets!
    Stay tuned, as there’s more garden ideas, projects and crafts coming your way! Exciting news: I'll be hosting an online workshop to help of winter sowing. Details will be sprouting soon, so keep those eyes peeled!
    I can't wait to sow and grow with all of you this winter!
    Thank you so much for watching, I'll see you in the garden!!!

    I started my whole flower farm with winter sowing this year! I don't have the money for a climate controlled greenhouse. My favorite container was using the gallon ziplock bags. After filling the bags with potting soil and seeds, I set 4 bags next to each other between my raised beds and ran marshmallow sticks through the top of the bag and resting on the wood of the bed to keep them upright. I added a clothes pin to the"mouth" opening of the bag. This method made opening and closing the mini greenhouse much easier on those hot spring days and cold nights. It was so easy to tear open the bag when ready to plant. I didn't have to cut through duct tape or have to save quite so many gallon jugs. I did add coffee filters to the bottom of my jugs and bags to prevent slugs from entering through the drainage holes. I can't wait to try it all again this winter!

    Makes so much sense I wish I would have known this last year so incredible I'm loving that you use the dollar tree seeds also I've had people ask me about that and it's amazing to think 20cents and it's amazing usually people think I'm nuts but my garden is absolutely beautiful for literally pennies 😂 thank you I'm so happy I'm not the only person with this and beautiful garden

      And the best part you can save the seeds once you grow the plant. So then they are free seeds!!!

    Winter sowing is how I found your channel last winter. So fun, so low maintenance, so economical! Plus, it allows us to play in the dirt we'll before garden season. So many wins!

    This will be my third year for Winter Sowing. I'll add that it's perfect for people who don't have space inside their homes for starting seeds. It gives the seeds the cold stratification time they need. Also, when placing whatever containers you're using, be sure you put them somewhere the winds won't blow them over. Learned that last year. I'm in North Middle Tennessee, zone 6b/7a.

    Hi Kim, I'm in zone 6b - Central, Southeastern Ohio. We are on a decent-sized piece of property of 1.75 acres that we have rented for going on 5 years this coming February. We do have several micro-climates on the property and a couple of low areas that tend to hold excessive water when it rains a lot, which it did this last season. When we first moved here from Denver, it was a huge learning curve for us, but we were thrilled to have a longer growing season to garden. I have to admit that I am horrible at trying to remember to get my seeds started early and usually end up doing without or spending lots of unbudgeted funds to purchase starts at the nursery. A couple of years ago I saved up a ton of milk jugs with plans to winter garden even though my husband did not like the idea of the ugly jugs littering up "His" yard... when it came time to start getting the jugs ready I discovered that both my son and husband had thrown all of them away when they cleaned up the basement, so once again we spent lots of unbudgeted money at the nursery. I am determined and more planned this year and I'm ready for their complaining, I have a couple of large storage containers downstairs that I am putting them into so they won't see them this time. Also, we are in the process of tearing out the old garden beds because of rotted wood due to a low spot in the garden and we are building a much larger garden for next season. After reading a couple of the comments, I think I will wait to fill a couple of the new beds and place the milk jugs in them just in case I need to protect them at any point. I am so excited and cannot wait to try this winter gardening method and finally have lots of flowers and herbs in our gardens and all around our home. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with all of us, it is very helpful to watch others and their results. P.S. Have you had any problems with large opaque (white) worms/slug-type things in your soil? They were a huge problem for me this last season (2023) and I think I may have to sift all of our soil in order to remove them. The problem is that they tend to feed on the plants' root system thus killing the seedlings before they get a good start. So many strange-looking bugs (not good ones) making their way across the US that originate from Asia and they are a real problem. Here's hoping we all have a successful 2024 gardening season. May God always Bless you with good health, safety, a beautiful garden, and prosperity in all you do.

    Just curious if you tilled up the areas where your flowers are and made a “raised bed” or boarder for them? Would love to see how you did that….

    • @thesoutherndaisyllc
      @thesoutherndaisyllc  7 місяців тому

      So no I didn't make a raised bed, they are directly in the soil. I did use my small tiller (Sunjoe) to till up the beds but I don't think I will this year. Honestly I think I tilled up the perennials that would have come back last year without even realizing I had. So I may just spot till or just dig up the holes. I do have a video of taking my backyard and creating the garden from a lawn. We show tilling and the whole nine yard process. ua-cam.com/video/xJG7KhXwvTc/v-deo.htmlsi=CfuRqHjXG8MXJlIF

    I’m going to start sowing in gallon water jugs in Zone 6B. I’m not sure two things: how many seeds per jug? How to extract from the jug without killing tender seedlings come spring? Thanks everyone.

      Hey, YAY! I hope you have the best success in your winter sowing. I actually filmed a video of how to get them out of the container and you just reminded me. I will post that this week just for you :-) So the rule of thumb I go off of with a gallon jug is 12-15 seeds per jug, You can go less if you want to. Sometimes I get a little carried away and just sprinkle but this year I want to be a little more intentional.

    One more question: are all of your flowers being started in the jugs? Or do you sow seeds directly as well

    • @thesoutherndaisyllc
      @thesoutherndaisyllc  7 місяців тому

      Ask as many as you have, I love it! So the only ones I direct sowed were the Zinnias. I tried sunflowers several times and they were a buffet for the birds so never again. I will start them in the jugs or indoors late in the winter.

    Awesome video! Thank you!
    My planting zone is 8a & Im confused when you said so many weeks 6, 8 etc. knowing when to sow?
    I’ve saved seeds from my coneflowers @ a few blanket flowers.
    I will start saving gallon distilled water jugs.
    Im going to start out small, but need guidance when to start sowing.
    Thank you! Excited to try!

      So I have a container that I keep week six seeds, and then another container for week eight seeds and another container for week 10 seeds etc. By weeks I mean, when I need to start them which would mean six, eight, ten… weeks until my last frost date. Does that help? Feel free to ask more questions and I will answer so you’re not confused. I’m so happy to hear this was helpful.

      I think I got it.
      So if my last frost date is say, May 1 and a seed packet says “sow indoors 8 weeks before your last frost date” I winter sow the seeds in my container on March 1?
