Your reactions are adorable. I’m glad I’m not alone running around my garden every morning wondering what happened over night. It’s like Christmas morning every day!

The danger with growing too many things in a bottle, or too smaller bottle, is that the plant becomes reliant on leaning against the bottle sides, rather than gaining its own stem strength. This is why you see some garden nurseries and other growers using fans, so that there is a bit of wind for the plants to get used to (the main reason is that circulation to prevent mould and other fungus to be honest, but it’s still helps).

I had no issues with gnats and once they are opened up and either pinched back or planted their stems strengthens. Several are strong already Honestly the WS way eliminates the acclimation that has to happen with indoor grown plants. So there are of course some parts that aren’t perfect but overall I think it’s so much better, my plants are healthy and my results are phenomenal many years running which is why I’m so passionate about this method.

I am kinda doing this. I started some seeds in a tray with a lid and it’s working nicely. I used small soft pots last year and put them in a big plastic tote which worked well too. I like this idea a lot! I appreciate all of your hard work and the k college you’re sharing with us. ❤❤ sending garden love from one Kim to another! 🌸🌻🌷

Many appear leggy and would benefit from being pinched back to above first permanent leaves. I am speaking from personal experience as I learned this the hard way because I was so happy with them growing tall in my jugs. Also learned not to sow the entire seed packet in 1 jug. Reduces overcrowding and allows for a backup plan. Zone 8B

Everything looks so green and luscious! I’ve always wanted to try winter sowing but being in a zone 3 my growing seasons are so short the way it is I’m worried they just wouldn’t have enough time. Especially since we always get more snow in April.

Honestly I think you should try it. Even just two or three jugs to see what happens. 😊

Hi Kim, love your videos. If you haven’t tried it, plant some fennel for the butterflies. They devour mine even more than the dill!🦋🦋

I followed your video and started so many containers. I have had pretty good results. I didn’t know I was supposed to move my containers around to different locations. Did you move them in the shade? I am planting out the cold hardy and perennials and starting the tender annuals this week. I am in Zone 5B in Ohio. I hope to get great results for those seeds as well. I don’t have enough space inside to start all the flower varieties that called my name but I have containers. I also had great success with the gallon ziplock bags held up by marshmallow sticks between raised beds. Happy gardening😊

The only plant I saw you grow in a bottle that I wouldn’t is the carrots, they really don’t like being moved around and need space, if you try to grow multiple in a small space the roots simply won’t grow into good eating carrots. It really is advisable to direct so carrots and similar root vegetables with adequate spacing rather than using winter sowing.

You’re exactly right and they didn’t do anything afterwards.

I honestly was trying anything just to see what worked and what didn’t. When do you direct sow your carrots?

@@thesoutherndaisyllc late march, so not quite yet. I put a glass cover over it to help keep the soil warm, but they are where they grow - not crowding or transplanting needed. Works every time.

Your winter sowing looks great. So many poppies! Over here in Oregon we pronounce the pine in lupine too.....minis the southern accent. 😆
Do fun to watch, thanks for sharing.

What type of soil did you use? Your tomatoes grew to a good size, mine germinated but are still only about an inch tall. I thought maybe soil was the problem.

Weather. That is the subject when it comes to WSing for me.
You had great turnout! Even though the small bottles were a pain to keep watered.
Last week we had 90s🥴had to cut them all open and by Sunday of last weekend we had 6” of snow. 😮. I couldn’t tape them back up because it was raining first so I covered with plastic and quilt. I had some onions planted because I needed more room in GH. We have chicks and trying to keep everything warm or cool has been a chore. We had a ton of rain today and hail and didn’t uncover WS. I hope they aren’t squashed as I was just starting to see many come to life.
So as you said the weather has been tough to deal with. I delayed planting in Jan as we had RAIN ☔️ unheard of really. Now we have March weather in mid April.🙄
I was discouraged to see the purple poppies not doing so well and they either cooked, froze or got dry at some point. I think I have a few left to try yet. I just plant the clumps as they all seem to hold each other up and reseeded very nice all over the place👏🏼👏🏼I Do however have Foxglove and guarding it big time as I’ve never had them before and last year’s sprouts croaked.
For the weak and leggy plants I think they will stiffen up now that they can sway and get sun. Just don’t forget to water now😊
I just started brassicas of all kinds yesterday and put out as we are back to 30? At night hopefully stay at 40-50s daytime.
I held the reins on starting tomatoes and peppers too soon so I hopefully won’t have a jungle. I need to sneak a few in jugs to try yet. I way over planted celery inside-I don’t know what the heck I was thinking planting 2 flats one each of 2 varieties. I blame it on cabin fever in late January, but now they are 7”+ high😮. I have a great plan to plant in grow bags and set in kiddie pool with drain hole 3” up and I can move to shade if needed. They don’t do well if they get too cold so couldn’t plant yet. I’m really hoping for State Fair celery this year😁
It’s been a crazy start with weather, chicks, bare root stock arriving and monitoring that I feel behind and at times like Where is all this going? I sunburned my hands last week and by Sunday they were burning cold from snow😅
I see you have a lot of green sod-Where are all your plants going?😂😂
So much to do to expand the garden because we have to put fence in. And our quite new riding lawnmower is out of warranty and the transmission is cooked with about 130 hours on it and we have no hills, I mow about once a month because we usually are too dry for grass to grow and the Dixon Co was bought out. I sure hope the place we gave business to figures something out. I should have just bought a cheap mower as I had one before and it was Great! Live and learn.
Another cold weekend coming and more rain tomorrow. Lol, my SIL said snow, hail on the blueberries, What’s next..Locusts?😂. We said Frogs😂. She finally has a sunny yard to garden in and she covered everything also as the heat broke buds on many plants. She said the neighbors will think I’m 😝. It’s just the weather that does that too us😊
Happy planting and thanks for reveal and also glad I wasn’t the only one questioning and moving winter sow around.

Maybe they are leggy because the bottles were supporting the stems. They are very tall. Hopefully they will toughen up.
