Try planting your zinnias HORIzONTALLY in a trench-type hole. Those little furry pieces on their stems are like tomatoes - I did this - planted the entire plant horizontally in a trench rather than putting the root ball in a single hole. I got successful 5 stems from one plant! With flowers! I quadrupled the output of this plant. Loved it!
WOW!! I'm in MI & did winter sowing for the very first time this yr. When I looked in the containers a couple weeks ago, I was amazed to see all the little sprouts, as if every seed I planted germinated. I hope my sprouts come out as well as yours, I'm so excited!
I can't help but tell everyone I talk to about gardening about how great winter sowing is too! I'm going to give bee balm another shot - I tried it before but not with winter sowing, and didn't have much luck. The same with Mexican sunflower. So thanks for sharing your success winter sowing them!!
Oh wow. I can’t believe they didn’t work very well for you, but I am so excited to hear you are going to give them both another shot. Congratulations, you had great success. Isn't it awesome when you open the containers? I texted with you last year about the redbud tree seedlings I winter sowed. You should really try them. Last summer I planted about 10 of the winter sown seedlings in my yard, and only 2 didn't make it thru the winter, and they're about 2 feet tall now. I winter sowed another bunch of seeds this winter, and I have 18 more seedlings growing. I can never use that many in my yard so I guess I'll try giving a bunch away. I also winter sowed more veggies than flowers this year, and I had more success this year because I moved them into the sun more than last year as well as watered them more than the year before. It's an experiment every year.

Absolutely! So last year I planted them between 2/19 and the last batch was 3/6. No rhyme or reason and no special order. I just plant everything at once. I opened them on 4/19 which was supposed to be before the last frost of 4/20. Because we had very cold nights in the 10 day forecast for several weeks, I kept them in their containers but open during the day and protected at night until May 6th when I was safe (no cold on the forecast) I planted everything out. Awesome returns on your Winter sowing. Would you share how you get them out of the containers and the planting ? New gardener here…. What’s pinching back ?
Pinching back is just pinching off several top sets of leaves so that your plant will branch out and produce more flowers in the long run 😁 good idea for zinnia seedlings and many others like dahlias etc ...
What time of year do you plant your seeds? We have heat here until mid December and spring starts in March, would love to try this but can’t figure when to sow
Hi , Your winter sowing has produced amazing results, well done ! .My question is do you direct plant or do you pot them on ? Also what month are you doing the big reveal here ? Finally I live in northern England, Zone 9a. In your estimation, what month should I be sewing seeds . Thanks in advance.
Milk jug sowing you're just direct sowing in the container. You basically put drainage holes, soil, and seeds, water well, leave the cap off and throw it outside. This is best for things that need to cold stratify in order to sprout. This way when nature tells them it's time they will just pop up and you can plant them where they need to go. No hardening off needed and it helps to keep environmental issues (such as birds and squirrels, freak cold, soil dryness, flooding, weeds, etc) from giving you bad germination rates or zero germ at all.
Do you do a winter garden? I generally don’t because I don’t have the space to pull out my plants and start them but maybe this method would work to get a winter garden started. Have you tried it?! 😊
I haven’t tried it. I don’t have a winter garden only because by the end of fall I’m worn out and ready for a time to chill. Then once it’s too late I regret not doing one. I literally do this every single year lol.
@@thesoutherndaisyllc I do the same. 😂 I’ve only done it one and I basically threw seed in my boxes and got some cauliflower, broccoli and peas. It was just OK for me. Maybe this year I’ll try!

Learning so much from your video garden journal! Looking forward to applying your method next season
Thank you for sharing. I winter sow, too! What zone are you in?
When did you sow them and what zone are you in
I’m zone 7b now changed to 8a. I started late Jan and sewed the last in late Feb.
Did you black eye Susan bloom in year one?
YES!!!! Nonstop all summer long.
How do you water them?! And how may times a week!month!
I water them by spray bottle and just if they are dried out. Mother Nature waters them otherwise
What time of year do you plant your seeds? We have heat here until mid December and spring starts in March, would love to try this but can’t figure when to sow
Where are you located? Let me try to help you.

I say calendula that way too. 😂😂
So hard lol glad I’m not alone 😉
I think I find sister in crime 😅😅😅,I’m same way ,and this yr I have like 70 jars, going tomorrow to DD ask if they have jars,I love doing this,so much fun. About black Susan I find in field, bring one p,ant home, now every yr I have them ton, keep giving to neighbors, also calendula,in my vegetable garden keep coming by tons, also keep giving away.I have beebalm magenta, red and purple, invasive, and my friends and neighbors happy because they all moving slow to they garden.
Ahhhh this is wonderful ☺️ I bet your garden is lovely! Your neighbors must love this and you!
Perennials tend to grow slower!!😁
