A TSA agent told me that real gold wouldn't set off the airport detectors, but hubby gets pulled aside every time and is gone over with a wand. His college ring is HUGE and I have wondered if that sets things off. He had 39 yrs in the Army, so I thought it odd that he always got pulled aside. Of course, he is the one that is always in a hurry and we end up waiting. LOL
Russ, I honestly didn't expect you to find anything at all this go round because you're not used to your detector, and you just haven't done it often enough to be familiar with the whole process yet. I'm the same way with one. I expect if you talk to some of those experts and run it more often it will start producing some good finds.
its just a fun hobby.....I get bored too quick.....

Cool, I have an older model GB2 that I need to get out and poke around. Looks like you were parked at a boondocking spot. How many bottle caps and pull tabs did you find? It's amazing all the pull tabs I find after what.......40 years? I would think Quartzite desert is full of them. At least it keeps you busy......:)

I thought you can go with metal detector anywhere on public land. You have to have a claim?
you need to get permission if its a private claim even on BLM land
How would someone know if there is a claim on BLM or National Forest. Always thought that we have millions of acres to dig in. What is even the point of buying metal detector if I have to belong to a private club. I can camp, fish, hunt but can't walk around with metal detector?
Trout Junkie I know a claimed land at one point was free for anyone to prospect on it, then one day someone found gold and went to the land office to find out if anybody had the rights to it or in other words a claim on it. If nobody had claimed it that person can prove that there is some type of mineral in this case gold and follow the proper procedures and pay the fees you become the claim owner. You do not own the land you are just paying fees for claiming rights to prospect that land, if you do not pay your fees you can lose your claim and it’ll be for the taking for the next person to come in and pay the fees many times claims are abandoned. But I know what you mean it’s Gods earth we should all be able to enjoy it, but like always man has always been greedy, it’s all about the money. But ask the Native Americans and they’ll tell you who’s land it really is.
