Mouthpiece Spotlight: Kelly Lexan Plastic 3C Trumpet Mouthpiece

- This is a cost-effective solution to playing in cold climates. It doesn't sound any worse than a metal mouthpiece of a similar price, feels fine on the lips, and doesn't feature any sharp edges. It's a far better solution than trying to 3D print a mouthpiece.
EDIT: As of late, rather than fitting too loosely, this mouthpiece has had a tendency to get stuck in the receiver. If anyone has any suggestions to prevent that they would be much appreciated.
Why are you roasting yourself the whole time? You’re pretty damn good man!
Haha I appreciate the kind words! My humor is just kinda dry like that. I like to poke fun at the nagging audience members.
Hi, plastic seams work fine, thumbe up for Kelly.
Myself use a Faxx 3 and 4C, also ok for my kind of music.
Keep testing old man,
Johnny D Bergh
Agree! Kelly has really surprised me lately! Kurt Thompson
And why does the price matter? If it's good for articulation, would a very expensive mouthpiece articulate better?
For me, and I think most people, conventional brass mouthpieces respond and resonate a little better than plastic mouthpieces. While this mouthpiece produces a good tone, its articulations feel muffled compared to its standard metal counterpart. It's not a huge difference, probably imperceptible over a phone mic, but nonetheless, it can really mess you up mentally during gigs if your articulation isn't as "on-the-money" as usual.
I use a plastic p-trumpet 3c that I use with my Yamaha 300AD I kill it, not sure why but it fits me well I don’t lose my seal as easily .. I have a Bach 3C, Blessing 7C, Denis Wix 4X gold shallow cup, and a Yamaha 411 that came with the trumpets ( I hate it)....one of the UA-cam teachers claims that a Bach 3e is the over all best standard MP I’ve never tried one. The Blessing 7C is very responsive for a cheap mouth pieces. My teacher tells me I needed to stick to just one ( he doesn’t like the plastic 3C)
Sorry for the late reply- but very curious. I think the only mouthpiece I've liked less than the pTrumpet one is the one that came with my $15 bugle off of Aliexpress, but to me that makes it all the cooler; that it suits you so well. 7C is a very common size and I stuck to it until 8th grade despite trying many different sizes one summer.
3C is also a very well-respected size that I used from 8th grade up until the embouchure shift at the beginning of 10th. 3E is great for getting sizzle in your sound, but Kurt Thompson is widely regarded as a bit of a buffoon. It's not a middle-of-the-road, everyday use mouthpiece. Few people could make it work in a wind symphony or, god forbid, a symphonic setting. All I can say is to try as many diameters and cup sizes as you can.
Also, listen to your teacher over me, but in my opinion, you shouldn't be too afraid to play slightly different cup depths for different genres, just as long as you don't change diameter much. Hell, I go from a Denis Wick 2 on cornet (deeper than a swimming pool) to a 1-1/2A (slightly deeper than a C cup, but not much in comparison) to a Reeves 43C (Probably a D cup on the Bach scale). All are close to what Bach would call a 1-1/2, but with very different depths. Lots of pros are notorious for doing it. It's a quick and easy way to change timbre. Hope this helps.
Samuel Plays Brass I purchased the Bach 3e it’s sucks, Iam now using a Blessing 5C it fits my chops just about right. Would a Bach 5C sound better or play different than the the Blessing 5C?
A quick note about the 3E-- it's not that it sucks. It's that it doesn't suit you as well as a 5C. I know a horn player who uses a 3E on trumpet and loves it.
While Bach is probably a better route to take than Blessing, in my opinion, unless you're absolutely sure you're going to stick with a 5C I wouldn't go out and buy a Bach. I was tempted to go right out and buy a Bach 1-1/2C Megatone right as soon as I switched from a Bach 3C Megatone to a Blessing 1-1/2C, but just to be sure, I held off for a bit. After a matter of a few months I decided I liked the 1-1/2C much more than the 3C, and thus I got my Bach 1-1/2A Megatone, but for several months the Blessing was my main. Blessing isn't half bad, and you won't notice too major of a difference between it and Bach. I just wanted something slightly deeper, thus why I use the 1-1/2A, a size that Blessing doesn't offer.
Samuel Plays Brass: wise words sir.... I will hold off on any new purchase until I am confident that a 5C is my long term MP. I do have a gold 3C Denis Wick that feels similar on my chops as the 5C but have not spent much time with it because my teacher freaks out anytime he sees a different mouth piece laying around. It was like pulling teeth just having him agree to exit the 7C in favor the 5C. Only reason I purchase the 3E was the character from Texas claiming the 3E was the best ( my teacher never knew I bought it) ...as I mature as a player I’ll look forward to trying different MP’s ...love your channel... is your goal to be a pro trumpeter traveling the world entertaining the masses? ....maybe the Next Chet Baker minus the drugs 👍
No need to call me sir like that! I’m just a kid looking to get better at the trumpet, like you. I don’t intend to play professionally, though. Just as a hobby
I don't know if you get annoyed by this question, but what microphone do you use in this? In working on trumpet multitracks and am having problems with the tracks overlapping cleanly with my current mic.
No worries, Chris. The issue is that I don’t really have a good answer. I just use my phone for recording. I quite frankly don’t know much of anything about external mic systems.
Samuel Plays Brass Impressive, you get a much better sound then I do with a cheap mic! Maybe that's just because you sound so good :)
also what model phone do u have some phnes are better than others for this type of stuff
I have an iPhone SE which has a pretty darn good camera. The audio is good but of course not exactly the greatest.
Hi, I am in my schools jazz band, and it is fairly small as I am the only trumpet player so I’m playing the first trumpet part, but my range is not the best ( I can hit a g on top of the staff about 70% of the time) and in the piece we are playing has a lot of gs would this mouthpiece be good for me? (Also it doesn’t go below a middle g in the staff so low range won’t be a problem)
Hi Conner,
I don’t recommend the Kelly plastic pieces unless you have a metal allergy, play in a pep band outdoors, or play in cold environments frequently. I suggest checking out the Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz mouthpiece (like a 3C but a little shallower; more of a 3D) or a Bach 3D or 3E, both a tad shallower than a C cup.
Samuel Plays Brass thanks! I’ll look into that mouth piece.
The “angry bee” tone is cuz it’s a screamer mouthpiece lol
As far as I’m concerned, it’s an ordinary 3C. The cup may be ever so slightly shallower and the throat a hair smaller than a Bach 3C, but it’s still a moderate size.
I’m just basing it on what it’s advertised as. Unless there’s a different model than what I’ve seen. Which, wouldn’t shock me. And looking back, you said you paid ~$20. I paid $40 for mine, so it seems very possible
Yep, I’m almost certain you’re thinking of their Kelly Screamer model, which is much smaller and probably sounds like an extra angry bee. The one I have is modeled after a very conventional orchestral/wind band mouthpiece size.
Ahhh makes sense. Hopefully mine does what I need it to. It’s for recreational screaming, but, idk
You were right. It sounds like an extra angry bee
Red mouthpiece, red shirt, red hair. Coincidence?
You say it's "of course" not what you would use in legit playing, but you don't say why.
Too many zooz
