Mouthpiece Spotlight: Vincent Bach Megatone vs. Traditional 3C

- In this video I play on two very similar mouthpieces: a Bach 3C and a Bach Megatone 3C. The only differences are some added mass on top, a very slightly larger throat, and a $50 price difference, whereas the benefits are slightly easier slotting and more tonal core to your sound.
EDIT: I'd like to add that long after uploading this video, I learned that the non-megatone 3C is actually not a true 3C. In terms of cup diameter it is somewhere around the 1.5-2 range. The more I mess with it the more I like it. It's a great mouthpiece for lead work, actually. Slotting isn't as firm as on my megatone 1.5A and the cup is just a bit shallower, so it helps to peel the paint off of the back wall without messing with my low range. TL;DR the two mouthpieces in the video are actually slightly different sizes, despite having the same markings.
Я не понял, а какой больше megaton или классический?
Имею ввиду что больше megaton 3c или обычный 3c
@@trombadel Обычный 3C больше, чем мегатон
From where I'm sitting I hear a pretty nice difference in tone between the two. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for this excellent video demonstrating the differences between the Bach standard and megatone mouthpieces. It has helped me make my decision to buy a megatone.
Glad you enjoyed the demo! This is not exactly my proudest video, having been made when I was a high school underclassman, but I’m glad it helped, and all these years later I still stand by Megatone and other heavyweight mouthpieces.
@@SamuelPlaysBrass It's remarkable that you were just in high school at the time. You played at a professional level, and you were articulate and poised throughout the presentation. I wish you great success with such talent!
sam I love you
but
you are a good person
Samuel, one week ago I changed my Shilke 14A4A against a Bach 3c and that's really good, I say that the classic only interests me to warm up. Well I don't feel any difference between the 3c and the megaton. Explain to me if you want of course in simple English.
In any case you assure
The difference between the classic 3C and Megatone 3C is very, very minimal. Some players will find that the Megatone has a more precise sound, but the style is not right for everybody and many players do not notice much of a difference.
thanks ; have a nice day .
Any tips on getting my lips to last longer after playing high notes? They tend to get tired after a few high notes and then I’m unable to bring those notes out. I’m in the 11th grade in wind symphony
One of the biggest concepts I teach is to always remember the difference between air and air support: the latter has to do with how much you're compressing the abdominal muscles and putting the air in your lungs under pressure. Now, as you run out of air, you have to compensate with more air support, meaning if you're not vigilant about giving the air that extra "push" from the lower abdomen or diaphragm, your body will automatically adjust by adding chop tension. It's a strange effect but you're almost guaranteed to "chop out" quickly if you aren't providing your airstream with some level of lower-body compression.
@@SamuelPlaysBrass the best explanation i’ve ever seen on this thanks!
Sam is an 5c an uncommon MP size? A friend of mine got one and he’s trilled with it, I tried it myself and thought it was terrific, what’s the deal with a 5c MP? My friend thought it was for beginners, I am not so sure about that. Please advise if you will. Thanks, I really enjoy your Chanel.
5C, although not that rare, seems to be a lot less common than the 3C and 7C, and the only time I vaguely recall trying it is sometime before eighth grade. I was pretty adamantly stuck to my Blessing 7C at that time. I'm actually surprised it works so well for both of you, since I don't see that size as much. However, I do have a friend in college who's well on his way to becoming a pro who loves his 5C.
There's no such thing as a 'beginner mouthpiece.' Sure, a lot of beginners use either the 5C or 7C, but that shouldn't discourage you from using a 5C if you really like it. We all have different embouchures, and different things work for everyone.
Samuel Plays Brass funny you say that, the Blessing 7C is my go to MP I can be more concise with it but dam, my mouth gets chewed up. I did find an early model “Olds” 7C that is a little more rounded but still cannot attack as cleanly as the Blessing 7C. I just found a brand new Blessing 5C on eBay for $20 I am trusting that will be the answers. As to why I like my friends 5C, i am not totally sure other than it fits my chops like a glove, I am able to tuck my bottom lip under with room at the top to fire away still managing to keep a tight seal ( btw: we’re not nearly as accomplished as you so we may not totally know what will eventually right for us. My friends father plays a Denis Wick 4xxxx gold, when he’s not home we often try to play with that, we love the sound but quickly fatigue, nevertheless the sound is awesome.... your Chanel is great.
Well, don’t take my opinion as the correct one- keep trying different things. Glad you enjoy my channel! Best of luck to you and your friends
Hey I played long time on a 5C so her my personal impressions: I thought it gave a marvelous very lively "Gershwin" or "musical" tone" and it was very flexible too. The downsides were that it's not really a small volume mouthpiece (rather deep for a C cup )and so it requires much practice only to keep the strength to play it well. In the end I changed away it from after long strenuous playing on the street (carnival) when the normally very sensitive responsive rim once really painfully digged into my lips . The round edge allowed my lips to slightly slip into the mouthpiece. After playing I saw the mark of the mouth piece very well. Next I changed to 1,5C which didn't dig into my lips and sounds nice too but the 5C has a special core and resonances, hard to beat, with another Bach I think. The Yamaha GP 16C4 and 17C4 come close and equally have a rather round rim that annoys many people.. The Denis Wick mouthpieces are the other extreme and have mostly very flat rims which will never punish you with hard over blowing ( Brass band) but sensitivity is something else. Normally it's a very good mouthpiece I think, absolutely not "too small".
Paul Dance your friend is right. 5c is usually used at middle school level.
hi sam, may i know what piece of song you are playing in this video?
I was playing an Arban flow study (not sure which one), Charlier 2, and the leggiero section from Getchell 81.
"not that [you] sound good on any mouthpiece".
There, I wrote it... cookie please? :P
Seriously though, keep it up buddy.
I owe you a slap in the face for that one :P
😂😂😂
Well you did kinda ask for it....
Is 3C mouthpiece can help you reach high notes?
In my opinion, no mouthpiece helps to play high notes. That can only be done through proper technique and practice.
I got a gold plated 5c megatone for $40
What mouth piece is more bigger megatone 3c vs megatone 5c thank you
KGH brass makes a slip over mouthpiece wrap that fits all Bach type mouthpieces that add weight and make a sound difference . I think it’s is a better option
I did a video on this product not too long ago. It’s a really nice piece of equipment.

The megatone mouthpiece sounds sort of like you are using a mute in the bell
That might be the resonance and vibrato, which my phone camera doesn’t deal too well with.
One cost more lol
lessons?
What about them?
Ever plan on giving any?
Probably not. I’m only a high school student.
Keep on playing the trumpet
I mean, if you look at my channel, I have indeed spent the four years since uploading this video playing the trumpet.
Ima tell you one more time😂😂i want your number😂
Let’s just say I’m not giving out my number on UA-cam
I'll give mine out idgas😂
Your parents must be very proud of you
Fuck im adopted lol😂
Dimentica i megatone .... se ti piace 3C acquista un Artisan 3C .... è fantastico, meglio di Monette
Interesting. I tried an Artisan 3C and hated it. The feel of the rim was completely wrong for me. That said, I have very limited experience with Monette.
?????????????
What?
