Super cool of Harvey to send you that 372, his passion for building power saws is inspiring. Definitely a good idea to replace the seals and pressure test the 044. I have an Arctic 046 that had the same problem, I rebuilt the carb, then swapped the carb, still ran rich. I had put a Farmertec tank handle on it as well, and it ended up the tank vent was bad. I put an OEM vent in it and that fixed it, something to keep in mind. Hard choice between the Stihl 044 and the 372xp, enjoy.
@@tinmanssaws another thing to check is that the case gasket is not leaking between the oil tank and crankcase. I have seen that happen on this era of Stihls given their age. The saw will get bar oil in the crankcase making it appear as running rich, slight at first, then smokey at first start, saw gets harder to start then over time real bad as the gasket leaks more. It is a good practice to remove the fill cap with the saw on it's side when pressure testing to check for a leak into the oil tank. I have fixed a few over the years that only needed a new case gasket. A dealer friend just did a warranty fix on a 592xp with a case gasket failure under the muffler were the oil tank and crankcase meet, so it stands to keep this in mind as part of a diagnostic with most saws.
I just bought a very clean MS440 magnum w 25” bar and chain. It doesn’t even have scratches on the bottom from starting on the ground no cracks chips or missing pieces! I prefer the older Stihls and Husqvarna over the new models but I have some new ones too! 😎
Tinman - when the saw came on - the smile on your face told to whole story about how you feel about your relationship with the IronHorse. I love the Harv man...he is a treasure and truly appreciated you guys being to kind with sharing your blessings with all of us.
I saw Harvey's last video of that saw so knew it was coming but just WOW!! I'm at a loss for words! Absolutely incredible! Always been a husky guy myself, tho I love all brands lol. The last few months I've been getting more into stihl. Surprisingly don't see too too many in my area. I'd love to see you go through your 044!
Hi tinman been offline for a bit. Glad to be back. A have missed so much. But I have plenty of content to catch up on. Lol. A jst got a homelite xl12 am hoping to port it not easy to get in Scotland but a got hur buddy.
Tinman!! Hey buddy nice saw u got there off Harv… we had our sawfeast Saturday just past letting u know my 08S won the first round of the upto 60cc class, second in the 038M shootout I used ur numbers and let my mrs grind on the cylinder also had a head to head solo Rex race I won that and we had a maple leaf challenge = canadien built saws= pm canadien 270’s I used my pioneer 650 and I won that too😉 I’ll have some footage up on my channel soon❤️✊
i have to get my 372 xp running it is my spare and actually for bigger wood my go to.. pretty sure the coil is gone...really like the sounds of that ironhorse 372...right now i am running a 572 and i absolutely love it. Keep it clean and sharp and have never had it to the shop yet. Smooth, one word for them Smooth. Have a great weekend everyone.
Great video as usual, and great saws! I love the 044's and I wish we had Arctic models in "the States",it would really come in handy in our Montana winters!
I watch your channel on and off for repair and rebuild tips - love it, great content. I have an earlier 044 I picked up on kijiji that was pretty beat up. I replaced a bunch of things (fuel lines, vent lines, carb boot, etc) and generally cleaned it up. The top-end looks clean. However, it runs super rich like you're describing on your 044. No matter how I set the idle or the hi/lo, it runs way too rich. I'm curious to see if the carb replacement will improve things on yours. As a test for richness, you might want try it with just the carb swap (before you replace any seals) to see if that improves the richness needed to run well. Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you make of the richness issues on your 044. Keep up the good saw repair content.
Hey Tinman checkout the air filter on 044. I had really choked air filter on Husqvarna 543xpg. It would idle good but run pig rich on high end and would not get to normal high rpms whatever i did to carburetor. Even that i washed the air filter few times in warm soapy water it would not help any.
Great looking saws ! Thanks for sharing. That Iron Horse saw is an animal. Here's a thought regarding your 044 running rich. Check your timing. I had the woodruff key shear on my 266 and it all the sudden was running pig rich. Not sure how or why. Anyway just thought I'd offer that as a possibility. Thanks again for all you share!!
Hey buddy I think I pulled the flywheel last year but it's worth another look see. Hope your 288 build goes well, I'm really happy with the one I just built.
I hope my 371xpg runs that nice when I'm done with it, or at least close to that...😊. Pretty sure it won't but here's hop'en...😂. Nice gifts from nice folk. On behalf of the Tinman and channel content for us, thanks guys and gals. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
Yup. I think that would be a great video. 4 of your best 70cc saws run hard and give a concise winner 🥇. Also, why are you a Husky guy if your favourite saw is a 044? I always thought that was funny. Cheers!
Hey Tinman - I was thinking of selling a few of my Stihl saws (026, 260, 441cm) and picking up a brand spankin' new MS462. However... lately i've been thinking that the 372xp might be a perfect long term "big" saw for firewood. I have a pile of 28" techlite husky bars so only helps the situation. If you had to pick on 70cc class saw, would an Ironhorse 372xp be it? Cheers!
Just get one…you’ll never regret it. Bought mine brand new for $749 in 1995. 28+ years now, bone stock still…and it NEVER disappoints! Just cut a huge Oak last weekend (10-23-2023), just a gem to cut with. It’s never failed me once💪😎

Yep thats a 77

Sssoooo, whats up with the stihl 044?
Pressure/vac test your carb there tinman. I suspect your getting some unmetered fuel somehow 🤔
At least half of the Stihls I work on I end up replacing the carbs. Not sure if the owners are abusing them that bad or what

I have a 2 455s here. They are ok but a bit heavy and down on power. I'd skip the farm and ranch saws and go for a pro saw.
Get the 460 rancher if you need a bigger than small homeowner saw and dont want to spend money on a pro saw.
