- I cover the intermediate clutch in more detail, including the differences in apply piston design over the years and variations (V6 vs V8) as well as show you how to set up the intermediate clutch, perform air checks and clutch clearance measurements to validate you've done it correctly.
Great video with important details on dialing in the intermediate clutch portion of these notorious transmissions. Very useful and informative. Curious about the possibility to temporarily install the pump without the pump-to-case seal just to check intermediate clutch clearance and end play before final assembly. It seems this would simplify the processes of installing and removing the pump from the case if multiple attempts are needed. Thanks for all the great content, @nickstransmissions
Hi John, thank you for the kind words! Yep, I do that all the time with most transmissions, esp the 200-4R (you'll see that rebuild series appear on the channel in a week or so).
This is great content. Thank you so much for creating it. Your presentation style makes it easy to understand and covers all the salient points. A friend and I are facing a rebuild of a TH350 that we've pulled from one of his old muscle cars, and this series of videos will be a great resource. I successfully rebuilt a C5 back in the day, so hopes are high. 😄
BTW, I'd love it if you could do a series on the 200-4R.
Thanks for the kind words, Griff! Coincidentally, I've been looking for a 2004R to build up...I've done plenty of them and know they can be tricky and have some nuance to them...Would make for a great video series.
Good luck with the TH350 build...I'd grab the ATSG manual for it as well as Ron Sessions' "The Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 Handbook" as both are great resources as well. Post if you have any questions once you get started and I'll respond as soon as I can.

I'm super-glad to hear you might do a 200-4R series. My eye is on that one for my '74 Firebird Formula 400 which currently has a TH400 because 1) BOP (though I realize there are adapter plates), and 2) I like the gear ratio spread better than e.g. the 700R4. I already have a 3.73 rear-end so that super-low 1st in the 700R4 doesn't sound good to me. Also, I had an '89 Formula 350 with a 700R4 and I didn't like the big RPM drop between 1st and 2nd. Looking forward to seeing some videos on the 200-R4!
You're welcome, Griff. Agree, the 2004R has much more favorable gear ratio spacing than does the 700/4L60E. Hope I can get / find one soon!

Hi again, is there a site where we can lookup the transmission part number to make sure I buy the right kit for it. I copied the part number off the side where its stamped in next to the oil pan. Its a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9 Diesel engine and I think its a 48RE. When i type in the number at any of the sites I found it comes up blank. I got the book and watched all of your videos so I am ready to pull the trigger and buy my kit. Thanks again for all your tips and insight.
Hi Doug, you have a 48RE; you can purchase a kit on eBay (get the all inclusive kits w/High Energy clutches) or Transtar’s website. There should only be one vintage of 48RE kit.
Secondly, you should have a six-clutch stack in the Overdrive Brake clutch however Ive seen some with the five-clutch set up (incorrect for Cummins applications) so look out for that.
Lastly, can you post any more 48RE questions on one of my 48RE series videos i have on the channel? If so, ill be alerted and will answer them there.

You make your own test plates 0n the 350 and 400 if so I like to purchase them thx again jb.
Hey Johnny...I don't make my own but you can purchase a TH400 test plate off eBay - type in "Turbo 400 Test Plate" in the search box and it will bring up one that's being manufactured & sold by a member called BT Performance. I looked for a TH350 test plate but didn't see one. Perhaps BT Performance has one available for the 350.

Sorry, I bought it about 6 years ago and don't know the seller's handle; I recall it was part of an estate sale.
I've been getting a few questions about the availability of that plate so I'll post a separate video tomorrow or Wednesday where ill provide dimensions, bolt hole and feed port locations so folks can make their own...You can use sheet steel or plexiglass, both will work as long as it's bolted down over top the case-spacer plate gasket.
