Let's remember, infrared heater of 700W will add 700Wh of heat in an hour. An aircon will output 2800-3500 Wh of heat energy with 700Wh of electricity. So use a heatpump as primary, infrared for the coziness.

Yeah this is as efficient as running a space heater, which is to say, not very efficient. Heat pumps are far more efficient.

I've had a 500w Infrared panel for just over a year now - my bedroom is above an uninsulated garage which was a nightmare to heat with the central heating but getting the heating panel has genuinely been a revelation! I set it at the temperature I want and leave it - the room has stayed nice and cosy ever since

I've bought a couple of smaller ones in the last few days, both free-standing, the first one for the kitchen where the small central heating radiator doesn't heat the room enough (yes, I've also got a wife!). A 540W panel fits conveniently under the breakfast bar and makes a big difference. Encouraged by that one I bought a very cheap (£30 from The Range) 425W panel for the conservatory. It's just 600mm x 600mm but it works a treat for taking the chill off in the evenings at this time of year.

Was interested in IR panels as the heat effect directly on you is very nice. Went to the Hershel showroom in Bristol. Was singularly unimpressed! Seemed to take an age to heat up and then you had to be really right in front of it to feel the effect. Then also discovered you could not alter its power like say an oil filled radiator. If it is an 800W or a 1kW or 2kW panel, that is what it consumes all the time pretty much...which I think works out very very expensive. What I did find it impressive was the garden IR heaters. These "glow" orange but gave off a fantastic heat, but not so nice inside a house. A panel would be better for that that emits no visible light.

Using a smaller one for under the desk to keep my feet warm during winter, works great.
But to say hat you will only use panels to for heating throughout the house is not that easy, you would need to plan that much more carefully. I think they are great as a addition to extra comfort.

There is a guide on the Mirrorstone website as to how many and what size panels for room size plus how they are best positioned. I bought three to trial two off 700w units for the large sitting room as I wanted to space them out and 1 off ceiling mounted unit for the kitchen which I positioned over the kitchen table, this also has a built in LED surround light which you can alter depending on how bright you want it to be so full bright white light when cooking etc and a nice soft yellow light when eating or entertaining. They work just as describes and are great when you simply need pretty instant localised heating, which we do during the day when the central heating is off. I am definitely purchasing another ceiling unit for the dining room. We have Solar Panels and also storage batteries so we can store the suns energy and then use it when required, yes it is like having the sun shining into the room.

Seemed like you are trying to heat the air space with it, but as i understand it the point is you heat the people (and things) and not the air... though if the directionality is so narrow, then that might be quite limiting.

I've run my entire house using IR heating for the last two winters. It's performed well and been cheap to run in comparison to my old wood pellet boiler. We heat rooms using much less power than other direct electric options for space heating.

I'm looking at installing a small IR heater in the bathroom with a motion sensor.
The bathroom is currently unheated and I can't afford to heat it constantly.
Having a motion sensor seems like the perfect solution since it eliminates manually switching it on and off and the problem of forgetting to turn it off.

I really like them, it is really like sitting in the sun - you have to experience it to understand. I've installed a few infra red heaters in homes and I'm converted. They seem to work well on the ceiling, pointing at you. Don't forget you would need to work out the BTU for a larger room. You might need a bigger panels and maybe 2/3 of them. My Aero flow electric heaters are not quiet when they cool down, I'm tempted to switch across to infrared.

When it comes to placement my experience roof with lights , easily the best, 2a minor tilt down,3 plenty of fabrics, furniture etc. in the way with clear sight, not ideal for Porch or garden room . Best way to think of it think of a window with the bright sun beeming in , 300w is only ideal as a small room secondary heating , 500w to 1.2kwh is idea for larger rooms, and yes you may need two or more for large 20ft plus rooms, it’s still cheaper using conventional or heat pump for who house setups unless you have a lot of solar pv day time excess than exporting

The air temperature is not really relevant as the heating is direct and indirect impingement. Creighton's video on this is also useful to see, like any system you have to match the heaters to room dimensions. I am looking at ceiling mounted IR panels with bathroom wall mounted ones.

  • @roderickmain9697

Warming a room up will depend on how much "stuff" you have in the room. The stuff will probably feel warmer than the air temp.... of course, that includes people. So theoretically, your usual heating could be giving the air temp 17 degrees but you could feel as if you are in the sun at 21. Bathroom definitely sounds like a good idea if your panel was on the opposite wall to where you hang your towels or shower...or on the ceiling No more getting out the shower and shivering.
If you have panels in every room then it could replace any other heating systems. Then your timing becomes useful so you can turn them on to warm up whatever room you are going to - say half an hour before bedtime, warm your bedroom.
Although we do have a heat pump our conservatory is often chilly in winter months so I'm now considering a panel like this for that area.

I have a 800W (not specifically IR) Dimplex electric panel heater in my smallish living room.
It produces heat from conduction/convection and IR (lets not forget all sources of heat produce IR, it's just that IR panels produce more of it).
Anyway I find my panel heater is fine for most of the year, I add another 600W heater on the coldest days.
And a few hours a year I roll out my old 2kW heater and turn the other two off.

I am thinking of using such a panel in the bathroom for the mid-season, when it is already too hot for central heating during the day, but on cold mornings this would be a good motivator to sprint to the bathroom. To'what distance can you feel the radiant heat with this panel? Or do you have to be really close to it?

Ifra red radiation is what heat literally is. So it is radiating heat. That's what it does. If you leave it on for an hour, you shouldn't find the air ambient temperature won't have heated up much at all, except by absorbing heat off of the objects in the range of the heating panel. So for the most part, it should be heating instantly.

I'm listening to you talk about how nice radiant heaters are with my 1960s tech, which is 0 - 5kW and does convection as well, plus a fraction of the size and 1/3 of the running costs.
A couple of points. Firstly it is giving out infrared closer to the spectrum of the sun than something of a very low temperature, which would be far infra red. The other thing is the temperature you reach and hence the efficiency of the system depends on the colour of your cloths. Black is best, white will reflect most of it. My heating bill halved compared to using the central heating radiators. The concept of radiant heaters is a good one. You guys rediscover the past. Of course my heater is Made in England. It is why it is still working.

You have to think of this like you would sunshine outdoors. 55F outside feels very different on a sunny day than it does on a cloudy day. Really the optimal use of this is to be able to keep a low air temperature throughout the house and place the panels strategically facing where people are at usually.
TLDR: you're not using it correctly in this video.

A great informative video, especially the power usage. But, as the heat is so highly directional, you'd need to make sure to have lots of panels pointing at the highest density items in a room so they can eventually radiate the infrared heat back into a room, once the panel had been on long enough. Then you're looking at many panels costing a few pound an hour, for however long it takes for the radiating effect.
