POPCNT is part of the SSE 4.2 instructions set, which is not supported by any Core 2 processor. So, to run Windows 11, you'll need at least a first-gen Core i-series processor (Nehalem), which is itself pretty old at this point.
Props to the people who have kept theses systems going. I've never been able to keep a computer functioning for long enough to not get security updates. Let alone upgrade the os
I saw a video from some other guy, and it's looking like the AMD CPU's are going need to be FX series or newer. Apparently they are requiring SSE 4.2 as well. Phenom I and II have POPCNT, but don't have SSE 4.2 they have SSE 4a. The first Intel Core i series has SSE 4.2 already.
We're talking about really old stuff here, especially on the AMD side of things. And it took 3 years of Windows 11 updates before finally running into a true compatibility issue.
I was shocked when i heard the news but i relived once my Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU overclocked to 3.55 Ghz has POPCNT. I have a 512GB SSD and AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB.
My retro console gaming PC (HP M01-F3224 Desktop with 32GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and Ryzen 5 5600G) runs Debian 12. I dumped Windows because Microsoft wants to force their services and how THEY want me to use MY COMPUTER that I BOUGHT down my throat. I don't think so. No company tells me how to use the computer I BOUGHT AND PAID FOR! Microsoft can burn in hell with their Windows 11 system requirements. Windows 11 can burn in hell. We need computers to respect the users, not bend us to the will of these damned corporations. I play retro console games for exact fact that I OWN them. I OWN my game library and it's not tied to the Internet where a corpo can decide "Oh that game's license is dead, you don't own it anymore. Say goodbye." or "Oh, that software can't validate your license, we'll quit that out now. You don't own it." NO! I say NO! It's time we as computer users say NO and embrace OWNERSHIP of what we paid for!
4:54 Adding to the fact that every build of Windows 11 is supported for 24 months, 24H2 by that will have the advantage of having an entire additional year of support over Windows 10. So I pretty much see no reason to stick to 10 at this point, even on unsupported hardware. And DEFINITELY no reason to pay for extended security updates when you can literally just unofficially upgrade to 11 for free

I knew that people running win11 on unsupported hardware would have problems in the future and this is just the begining.

OK. I am not a Microsoft lover, but who in their right mind would want to use Windows 11 on a Core 2 Duo!?
Microsoft (or windows specifically) lovers, obviously
This is planned obsolescence
