  • Windows Recall Coming to Every PC? So a lot of people are worried about Microsoft Windows Recall on Windows 11 24H2 and some people are going as far as saying its running all the time even when disable copying all your data and sending it back to microsoft, this is misinformation. As of when the video was made, Recall is only available on Copilot+ PC. Windows Recall is still an opt-in feature on Copilot+ PC

Explain to me why we need this feature? Most people have been using computers most of their life. They don't need to 'recall' anything. They can just rebuild it from scratch. Never mind that most software creates backup of everything you do, Like MS Office, so you don't really lose anything. Especially if it's in your OneDrive folder. So I ask again, why do we need recall?

Linux - no. By dint of the various distros. Linux is not one operating system. It's just the kernel with other bits added. If you figure one distro is spying on you (very arguably Ubuntu, say) you can switch to, say, Mint. But even as it stands there is NOTHING like Co-pilot or Recall or Microsoft telementry under ANY Linux distro.
BSD is also very anti-spyware but I grant is not ready for use by the general public. I hope, seriously, one day it will be.

I just find it weird that Microsoft products used to be so user friendly years ago now they are trying to constantly include features that the 95% of us will never use or need. All I need and want is a pc that can run office. Run a browser. Run a game here and there. I’m not really a gamer. But it just seems like all these newer versions of windows are more and more full of unnecessary bloat every day. I’ve dabbled in Linux a few times to keep older hardware useful with great success. But certain editions of windows it was basically released and well guess it’s time to buy a new pc. When vista came out. I stayed on xp because of the requirements. When 8 came out I stayed on 7 because of the interface. Now 10 is being replaced by 11 and my hardware that doesn’t meet the requirements can clearly run it perfectly.. Just has more hoops thrown in the way and junk included in 11 than I want to deal with. Seriously considering switching to Linux for a simpler headache free experience for me.

It seems to me that if Recall is not doing all the things that people are worried about the what is the point of it? Why would anyone want to use any PC that is recording everything you do every 3 seconds. Its worth noting that if Microsoft are not using this to gather information because they'd never have the storage facilities for it then its not going to take long for even the largest hard disks to end up stuffed to the gunnels with screen shots. I don't trust this any further than I can throw it. Microsoft wouldn't be pushing this as such great helpful tool for the consumer unless they had an angle. As for the creator of this video , he seems to be getting a bit under hot under the collar over this issue. Any system that wants to record your activities every 3 seconds and make screenshots of your screen is absolutely not there to look after the privacy of the user... BIG BROTHER

If I wanted this feature, I would rather prefer to use a third party app. The fact that Microsoft is adding this feature is to benefit them or perhaps the government. Yes I know we can disable it, but it still creaps me out that the feature is on there in the first place.

For full truth two details must be underlined: 1) MS past record of "mission creep" of unwanted stuff in Windows. The best example is ability to log in with just local account. It was normal behavior. MS started putting obstructions and hiding it. Now it requires actively fighting with the system... They want Recall benefits for THEM, mission will creep, we must be watchful. 2) Your misconception about data being sent to MS. No, they never imagined to send all the data back, not feasible as you noted. They know it. But, they WANT it. Hence, plausible usage of the local AI analysis (just as the Apple infamous ""local CSAM detection") is to analyze everything locally and send to MS AI interpretation hashes, very tiny in size but packed with info MS wants to know. That is in the future, near future. You couldn't easily prove it either as this would be small encrypted data streams, trivial to hide.

Just like encryption used to be an optional feature and is now forced in 24H2. Can still be turned off, but requires work. Recall is force installed now, even if not working sitting and waiting to be turned on, or just on and giving MS everything anyway. This was shown by people making custom debloated builds of 11 and shoed that the system in crippled without Recall installed, and no way to uninstall. Very soon it will be forced and not controllable as MS wants it.

Hi Brian, thanks for the video. Yes, many users have misunderstood how the Recall feature works. It is not mandatory on Windows 11 24H2, as you also mention in your video. Microsoft has changed a lot in the Recall feature; it will be an opt-in feature, which I think is very good. It requires a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and a Copilot+ PC right now. Then the Recall feature will come to Intel and AMD later from what I have heard, but it will also require new hardware, an NPU, and so on. But personally, I will not use the Recall feature if I buy a Copilot+ PC or another computer that supports the Recall feature in the future. Such a great video, Brian, where you also clarify how the feature works. I live in Sweden, so it seems right now I will have the option to uninstall the Recall Feature if I buy a computer that meets the requirements for the Recall Feature, but I think that everyone in the world should also be able to uninstall the Recall Feature if they want to. Take care Brian and have a lovely day in the UK

The issue of MS accessing sensitive user data has nothing to do with Recall or anything forthcoming. And has been around since long before Win 11.
If someone is using Windows then they agreed to the “END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE
    IMPORTANT-READ CAREFULLY:”
12pages of legal jargon but the right for Microsoft to access the data stored in Windows is clearly provided for in paragraph 8” Consent to Use of Data” of the user agreement. A pdf of this agreement can be downloaded from Microsoft.

Hade done a few tests on different pc's an with Recall enabled you will lose from 0-10% of pc power, and the worst is on a laptop running on battery. Other than that I still can't see any good use of Recall, so this disable command is copied right on my desktop to use for further updates (We all know how MS pushing things back)

Also recall will now store the data in a VBS Enclave, which is an encrypted virtual machine. "Supposedly" not even Microsoft could access the data if they wanted to. Of course if you are using your computer for illegal activity, I would probably still not trust doing that activity on a recall enabled computer. For the majority of everyone else, it will probably be safe. But I for one will not have the thing enabled. I don't care to see what I did on my computer 3 weeks ago. If I need to capture something, I use Greenshot as my capture program.

It is all well and good saying that MS have announced what they are doing through blog posts, but the problem Brian is that even if MS aren’t doing anything nefarious, they should make their users more aware of new features such as Recall.
I was speaking to my brother about the problems 24H2 is giving people. He isn’t a big computer nerd, and when i brought up about Recall, his first response was what’s that? And there is your problem, the average unsavvy user doesn't know about these changes.
And some are probably wondering why there’s this 8GB of space now being taken up or why their computer is laggy because Recall is enabled by default.
I wasn’t able to test 24H2 on my main machine to see for myself what it’s like on that as it gives me a boot error. So i wasn’t able to see all they’ve done. But they do need to do better in making their users aware of a new feature, what it does and if they would like it enabled.

That can be easily checked via a backdoor and hackers could also get their hands on it. I have registered that MS is going to secure these materials better now than it initially planned (and received a deserved criticim), but knowing MS even that will have some holes. And pobably the user will be blamed.

Already uninstalled Copilot, MS Edge, and Windows Widgets from 24H2. Also uninstalled a Phone Link, Mobile Device Features, and other nonsense. Once you buy a computer with an NPU unit in it like a new Desktop Ultra Core 200 Intel CPU, just go to BIOS and disable useless NPU -> problem solved. You do not f. know what Microsoft does with recall, they say it stays locally. Can you prove that they are not sending to the central server? (Trust me, Microsoft has enough storage space for all PCs running Windows in this world. You can bet on that.) No, you cannot and you cannot trust crooks at Microsoft. How do you know that they won't do it in the future? American people made 1000s of concessions to all different areas of gov and companies that ultimately they have very little freedom. Speaking of Windows -> do not ever keep any personal documents or other types of files in it. Use Linux for that. I use Windows for gaming only. For anything else, Windows is a complete garbage.

Microsoft has been preparing to do this for years. It issues a lot of gee-whiz goobledygook because it can't say that keylogging slows down older computers so much you'll notice it. That's why the nonsense about Windows 11 "not working" on older computers that run Windows 10 just fine (even when they do have TPM 2.0 and Bitlocker). That's why Windows 12 will require faster, more-powerful hardware too. That's why "helper" bloatware such as Cortana gets you used to newer computers being no faster than old ones. And that's why they keep moving around and hiding configuration settings. When they DO install and activate real-time monitoring through an overnight update, you'll never notice it. The computer's just as sluggish as ever and the drives and Internet connection are being constantly driven as usual.

Here's the thing; at the rate PC's are replaced or upgraded, it won't be long before most PC's comply with the Copilot+ specification. AMD and Intel will be incorporating 40 TOPS+ NPU's in their upcoming CPU ranges as standard.
Prior to the uproar about Recall, Microsoft had intended to opt people into its use by default. Unless changes have been made, the snapshots were not secure as demonstrated by someone using some Python code.
Of course Microsoft can't have everyone's snapshots sent to them. However, occasional and selective snapshot harvesting could, at some point, occur. MS have an awful record on privacy and anti-consumer trust issues, and no, that doesn't make me a conspiracy theorist.
Windows 12 will be even worse for shoving AI into everything you do. Of course, if one can simply disable the NPU on your CPU, that should help disable much of the AI "assistance" I would think.
