    In KwaZulu-Natal, commercial farmers are on edge. While they own the land they farm on, government owns the minerals that lie underneath, and it’s giving scores of upstart coal companies prospecting licences and rights to mine. Tensions between farmers and mining groups in Newcastle are at an all-time high as the coal prospectors move in by the dozen to mine what’s left of the area’s coal reserve. For farmers, what’s equally concerning is the risk to vital water sources like the town’s main dam that provides drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people. Who are these opportunistic mining companies and why are they being allowed to mine in sensitive and protected areas?

    People, take your country back. People that are involved in these mines live for today with no vision of the future. Those that make money from this most likely move on to other places after their destruction. Once they have sufficient in their pocket they most likely move to other countries.

    They should pay the rehabilitation fees up front. There is new Coal mining technology available that does not use water. It's call Air Plants. It separates coal density by Air. If they go the water route. Filter press plants need to installed that will clean the water to be reused. Then the water demand becomes much lower.

    Can we have the view from the mining people. We only have a view of the environmentalist and the Carte Blanche team. Let us have a balanced story to make our conclusion. It is not fair to have one view. Besides we cannot use one area to paint a picture that mining is irresponsible. Witbank exists because of mining. Johannesburg exists because of mining. The list goes on. So it is unfair to use one area to paint a picture. Newcastle is not even the biggest miner of coal.

    • @rofhiwakhobo2322
      @rofhiwakhobo2322 5 місяців тому +1

      From another environmentalist deeply involved as a consultant within the mining sector. Small mining companies do not have the financial means of rehabilitate the area post mining. Normally with big mining companies we set out a huge budget for rehabilitation (Financial Provision). The government or rather the department (DMRE) is the one that should be held liable for giving mining permits to people who do not have the financial capability to mine and rehabilitate. But then again, its a cadre deployment led government and that is why we are in this mess.

Further, your grammar is incorrect - they are not doing an 'EPA' ...!.... @@realitytvzm more like tribal custom. The leaders in the homelands get paid to give the people wise advice. Which leads to how to vote. If you don’t know what happens when you have to go and put your magic mark on the paper so you can keep your dwelling, chickens, and goats, the leader will show you how, that is how it is. There is also the sangoma who will “know” if you don’t put your mark in the right place and a curse will come to your house with terrible consequences or you go mad from waiting for it to happen. That’s why education is vital, but if you look for schools in those areas only the favoured are allowed to attend and it’s subjective, that is, the teacher ( usually only one) is regulated by the leader, who allows what can be taught, usually reading and writing and arithmetic very very basic.
