Anyone whom went to music college ...will respect how Talented Todd Rundgren is on this song. It's a complicated cross-singing/ rhythm beat. It doe's not spoil the song for me. Excellent!!
At first I thought 'oh no', but you're right. Absolutely amazing. Thanks to utube for reintroducing me to Todd Rundgren. You can get stuck in a rut as far as music is concerned. I only know this song, but will look into more. Thanks.
Yes, he's deliberately offsetting the beat by starting every line a beat and a half before the downbeat. It's incredibly impressive and he pulls off what he's trying to do. The band is totally on board. But it doesn't mean you have to love it - that's one thing that's great about the subjective nature of music!
Late to the party, but I also love it, and spot on that he’s offsetting, and that has to really tough, holy hell, impressive…and I have a soft spot for Rundgren, as my father, the coolest, and hardest/smartest and honest, admirable, fun guy ever LOVED the Friday song, “I don’t wanna work”…which to be honest is totally against his work ethic as he cared so much to provide much more than he should have…anyhow, love Rundgren, and my father Joe was theee man
Here on YourTube , NuShooz has a live concert clip where they also performed jazzy arrangements of their hit songs; and the musically astute comments raved on NuShooz' performance... but all the musical dummies could not deal with a live performance that did not sound exactly like the radio play version. Same phenomenon occurs on this vid. Kids, if you want a live performance to sound like the radio, stay home or drive around in circles (like the nascar dummies) and listen to the radio.
Incredibly talent dude and great to try different things but this one fell short. His sing matches the original arrangement but w very different music. Dylan is a master at this.
Todd has been quoted as saying that the lyrics were weird due to being drug-inspired. Ever since then, he's been trying to murder the song with different eccentric styles.
Very sly what Todd is doing here... he's giving his song an early-60's Bossa Nova feeling, replete with the anticipated phrases that Brazilian music is famous for.
I've been a Todd fan all of my life, since first hearing AWATS ... but this, I don't like this bossa nova crap. If some cheesy artist was playing this, ripping off a Todd classic, I'd be pissed. I guess it's his song, so he has the right to do as he wishes ... but this "era" was a failure. Saying that, I just bought my tickets to his Sept. 11 show in Indianapolis (1,700 miles from me here in TX) and I can't WAIT to hear the Todd and healing albums!! I was in Akron for AWATS; can't keep me away!
The thing about Rundgren is he can't seem to recreate or rpelicate his 2 main hit songs like this one & Hello It's Me in live versions. I don't get it. Is he tone deaf or does he does thsi on purpose. No fans dont' want to hear this crap version of this tune. I mean it's not horrible but it's not the tune really. It's like listneing to some cover singer & band. That's a shame.
Todd! Strange phrasing on this?? The band is trying to figure out how in the hell you want to phrase the tune and something seems terribly out of tune or chord that does not fit... This was simply not a good performance. I did not have to say that as Todd was already aware of it himself I am afraid.
he is a genius. on the studio or performing he is a perfectionist. do some of you fail to realize this is a different version of the song
The dude sure can play a banana!
Love it. So creative while still staying to the meaning of the song.
OMG I love this song this way 👍 just makes me love Tod so much more wonderful job ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏

I like the vocal and arrangement.

Brooks Smith works for me! Love it & have been obsessed with this video for years now.

Glad I found this
love this. love the nylon string solo
Love the sing and can relate :P

I like the original version more, but Todd is a master musician and it is his song.
Its what you call syncopated singing. He is having a ball, but half of the listeners didn't like it. He should have done a quarter part of it.

This was before Conan got really into Brylcreem and became infatuated with a cowlick.
Just right.
LMFAO !! Hes holding a Banana ! WTF !? Thats hilarious ! I love it ! *Slaps knee*

That's Prairie Prince on percussion The Tubes drummer
Is that a banana in his hand?
i was intrigued by brooks smith's comment on what he's really doing here. i kept thinking of jose feliciano-did he do this kind of singing?
You guys think i did a good cover?
love the tune but what's up with the banana seriously.
coolranchdorit0s it’s funny you’re the only comment i saw say something about it
Yeah this is all intentional. Todd is a musical genius. More than any "artist" can say about themselves post 1990.
Alice Cooper on guitar! 😉
Bossa's nova rythim????
On several vids of his i've seen he seems to be pushing the beat too much ( singing early)
I love this song but this version just sounds out of synchrony not simply bossa nova!
So Ernie Kovaks.
It's a good thing the original wasn't like this otherwise. . . . Todd would have been parking a lot of cars instead of being on tour
I'm charitably inclined to think they are having a go at irony.
Its cool that he was able to pull off the singing like that, but it isn't very pleasing to the ears. Very impressive nonetheless.
Did Todd clone himself?

Don't fix it if it ain't broke Todd. I think you should have left Hawaii and moved back to L.A.
Too hipster for TV.

Just hated the Bossa beat, but You cant kill a fuckin Classic...

Sorry but I HATE this! Will dig out my old 45rpm and play that.
mid life crisis, trying to be cool? lol
Should realized being Todd is cool enough
The original version was perfection. You can't improve on perfection. Thumbs down.
