I was at this concert with my bandmates and I remembered when he asked us all to sing and be part of his recording. Their is a photo on his album showing the audience at Central Park. The best of times.
This is magnificent. The photo from the Todd record which was captured on this day hung in my bedroom throughout my high school days. Never thought I’d see any live footage from this day. Also caught a glimpse of a young Michael Brecker on stage!
Todd put on a show on the West Coast, San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, to record Sons of 1984 so as to have voices from East and West for the record. I was there.
I was there too - serendipity- was just walking through with friends & ended up in a pic on the album ! Such wonderous times. Glad I grew up back then 😍
Amazing Footage, but it's sad there isn't a full video of this synched from the sound board. It'd be so cool to see. My favorite Todd era. Thanks for sharing.
Todd just played at the grand Louisville Palace (Ky) my hometown, last week. So wish I would've gone! Hope it went well. Todd, if you return, I'll definitely go. It's great to see this 51 year old footage. This is going to be a Todd Rungren listening day at my house ❤
I was also there for the recording of “Another Live” in August of 1975. I remember the performance of The Wheel like it was yesterday. I’m one of a few thousand people you can hear clapping at the end of The Wheel, as can be heard on the vinyl. That memory is priceless!
Wow ! Priceless footage Gail ! Nice job adding the audio . 🥂's to the good old days , and great times @ The Schaefer Music Festivals ! Thanks for sharing this . 😎
I was there, kind of. I was a kid staying at the Essex House in NYC with my family. Me and my brother took a walk with my older brother-in-law and heard the music while walking near the park. My BIL was trying to single handedly stop crime in the park (LOL). We saw someone trying to steal a motorcycle. He told the guy it was his friend's and he should be back any minute. We stood there for a while and then I am sure they stole it after we left. Anyway, I remember hearing the Utopia Theme.
Wait a minute, I WAS THERE! We hitch hiked from Hartford, CT. Took a train back to CT (next morning I think?) I was in high school. Don’t remember anything about the music!
Christ! Lost footage of a live event that was a distant myth for me at the time, age 17 in the UK, handling the vinyl LP that resulted. Reading the names of those on the innervsleeve and imaging the audience participation. Magic memory. Was that Utopia number being debuted? I hear now a Mahavishnu influence in Todd's furious guitar sound.
Strange.....always come back to this sensible gay and his beautiful songs. Dream goes on forever, such a beauty, thanks for all those 40 years pure pleasure.
Thank you so much for sharing this i've known about the existence of this concert for many, many years But I've never seen footage of it before. It was fascinating to see the songs that were new back then where does the time go?
Wasn’t this the Wilmen Rink concert where they took the photo of the audience and put it on the rear cover of the Todd album? My older brother was there dead center.
I think so Wollman Rink 1973 (Rundgren recorded this live at a free concert he set up at Wollman Rink in Central Park on August 25, 1973, and used the audience to create the choir. The concertgoers were given lyric sheets with the chorus and asked to sing along - Rundgren rehearsed them a few times and then did a few recordings. After getting what he needed for the song, he proceeded with the show. A photo from the event appears on the back cover of the album. The Central Park audience was used on the right channel in the mix during the chorus; the left channel is another audience from a similar concert Rundgren put on in San Francisco's Golden Gate park on September 9, 1973. This means when you listen to the song on headphones, you're hearing the West Coast crowd in your left ear and the East Coast in your right, a geographically accurate representation symbolic of the nation. The collective choir is credited as "The First United Church Of The Cosmic Smorgasbord.")
Wow, after ALL THESE YEARS of trying to check out the hot looking chic with the hot pants on you mainly see in an upside down mirrored shot standing on stage next to Todd on the back of the "TODD" record - THERE SHE IS, CLOSE UP AND IN LIVING COLOR and even hotter looking than imagined. And she brought her dog!? thank you - yes, and to the past!
I don't believe there is any recordings from that show other than the track The Sons of 1984, so I just tried to find tracks that were from the same year and had the feel of that era.
I like the songs, even though there’s been absolutely no attempt to sync them to their proper places in the video. Wondering if we could hear a version of this video with the original sound left in place?
I didnt but should have !! Had the"TOOD" vinyl with that graphic of Todds face with the list of those who did .First show was UTOPIA at Bushnell Auditorium Hartford Ct 1975 . Unbelievable performance !The Crowd was STUNNED When we entered the theater " Flamingo " was playing through the PA A hush came over the crowd and then WHAMO ! UTOPIA! .
Correction . It was not "Flamingo " it was " Drunken Blue Rooster " The last few minutes of which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created ( with the possible exception of Maurice Ravel )
Actually Harrison passed it to Jackie Lomax. Todd purchased from Lomax for $500 along with the right to buy it back which he never did. I believe Rundgren auctioned it through Sotheby’s.
Whoever thought Sons of 1984 would be an oldie? Where did the last 50 years go?
I was at this concert with my bandmates and I remembered when he asked us all to sing and be part of his recording. Their is a photo on his album showing the audience at Central Park. The best of times.
omg how koooool!!!!
My dad had that album. Now it’s mine. Still got the poster that came inside that album too. Everyone who had sent in names or something like that.
My name is on the poster.
I was also there. Great show.

I was there too - serendipity- was just walking through with friends & ended up in a pic on the album ! Such wonderous times. Glad I grew up back then 😍
I was at this show and sang on the song Sons of 1964 - along with a few thousand other audience members (I'm in the Right Channel!)
Son’s of 1984 you mean
@@JetEarlewood The Sons of 1984 would be the Grandsons of 1964.

I married a my that looked just like Todd....That's how much I loved him. And I had a Son in 1984!!
Proud to state I have the same birthday as this genius, every year I raise a toast on June 22 in his honor 🥂
State was also the name of Todd Rundgren's 24th studio album released 2013.
Miss those days!
Wow at the orange tube top hottie with the little dog @8:35. She is probably retired and living in Boca Raton now.
A wizard and a true star!

Great footage. I was a regular at the Shaefer shows. I saw Utopia there in the late 70's.
I was also there for the recording of “Another Live” in August of 1975. I remember the performance of The Wheel like it was yesterday. I’m one of a few thousand people you can hear clapping at the end of The Wheel, as can be heard on the vinyl. That memory is priceless!

50TH ANNIVERSARY TODAY
Oh my gosh!! Sons of 1984! I understand that the song was mastered using an audience from New York and another audience from L.A. Correct?

that's The Fool SG CLapton had, and Todd still has it i think
I don't understand the dubbing of audio from different shows onto the Central Park performance video.
I don't believe there is any recordings from that show other than the track The Sons of 1984, so I just tried to find tracks that were from the same year and had the feel of that era.

Was that Michael Brecker?!?
Bebe Beull on stage too
No u weren't my friend Helen Graves.. thought it was later. I was there. On the rocks wellman rink.. 11 yes old
Well it would be nice if any of the audio was actually synched with the video 🙄
Like ten people crowding him as he plays piano ?
Green haired M Frog Labat!
How many ways can I say it?
....ugh.. sorry... oh, i'll just shut up.. everyone here seems to love this. and that's really all that matters. i'll find something else..

Is this Fool Guiter of EC ?
Yes Gifted to EC from George Harrison ...
Actually Harrison passed it to Jackie Lomax. Todd purchased from Lomax for $500 along with the right to buy it back which he never did. I believe Rundgren auctioned it through Sotheby’s.
