Saw Todd on the 'With A Twist' tour (2nd leg) in Columbus, OH, Feb. 4th, 1998, at the now defunct Mekka club. His first set was punk rock versions of his songs, and the second set was done 'With A Twist' style, complete with on stage tiki bar.
I’m actually surprised since it’s his song he should be very familiar with the rhythm of it and also more in tune with the bossa nova rhythm. Sometimes they have an accent coach for actors in movies perhaps with this Monday needed a bossa nova music coach to make sure he stayed within the true bossa nova beat. If he wants to do some thing with a bit of a twist on the Rhythm, perhaps he should do a Reggae tribute to his greatest hits?

I love Todd Rundgren and his arrangement, it’s actually much tighter on the stereo recorded version but you’re right he is a little ahead of the beat. I guess I know what I’m talking about, I’ve been collecting bossa nova vinyl records over three decades and now have a collection of nearly 700 bossa nova records. This sounds like...a really unfortunate improv night. Why is he always so crazily ahead of the music when he sings live. Sounds not too great in my ears...
The reality might be that he is a studio musician more than a performer. It’s been said that about Crosby stills and Nash who were much tighter in the studio as well many other musicians who do best in the studio. I saw the group Chicago play several times back in the 70s and they were never as good in concert as they were on the recording sessions. Geniuses every one of them,. If we go back in time it’s clear that the Beatles were much more of a studio band the concert band. They must’ve dreaded all of the screaming teens in the 60s when they were doing live concert. Yes I’m sure they dreaded it… All the way to the bank!
