  • NOTE: There's a typo on a slide around 28:00... the 5D Mk IV is labelled as a 1DX II. It's pretty obvious, but everyone keeps pointing it out. The 1DX II does have GPS, my memory failed me. Also, Adobe announced that they plan to support Dual-Pixel raw (but didn't say "when").
    I preview the Canon 5D Mark IV vs the Canon 5D Mk III, 5DS-R, 1DX II, Nikon D810, Pentax K-1 and Sony a7R II. Order it on Amazon at on Amazon help.tc/5D4. Share, like, SUBSCRIBE!!

      If you do not know it Canon makes a crop to maintain better quality when recording high frame rate (60 and/or 120fps) obviously with better codec perform always too, unlike Sony makes interpolating pixels to "hold" the full frame at high speeds, I prefer the Canon's quality over Sony's versatility characteristics.

    • @Cal94
      @Cal94 8 років тому

      But would the 5D Mk IV maintain the 1.75x crop factor with 1080/60p or 720/120p? If the mark IV shoots those non-crop factor, then are the results really going to be any different between the companies? (Keeping in mind that most everyone else shoots with codecs over 4 times as compact. I've never shot with CF, but i know SD cards take no small amount of time to transfer just 10 GB of data. i couldn't imagine moving the hundreds of GB that the Mark IV would film). Or conversely, if the MK IV only films with the crop factor you really would have to question whether it's worth blowing $3,500 dollars on it for video. because that'd be a fucking rip off. a GH4 and olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 is $3,000 CAD ($2300 USD?). i think the widest lens you might find for the canon is maybe the APS-C sigma 8-16mm? the closest fast wide angle, maybe a tokina 11-20 f/2.8, again, another APS-C lens, so video only. and then you're over $4000, if you got the lenses used basically. that's absurd.
      And even if the canon shot marginally better video... audio input is only mono. so you'd have to record audio separately. that's even more hassle added to the post processing work flow for the canon. just no. don't shoot video with this thing. just pack a camcorder. they're about the side of a battery grip nowadays and shoot 4k proper anyways.

      But would you really be looking at this camera for the sole purpose of its video capabilities?
      the ground breaking 5D and 5DII days are gone. This camera will be bought because it is a fantastic all round performer.
      This camera packs a happy medium of all good things into one body. Tony is butt hurt because he didnt get all the toys he wanted in a camera he wanted.
      He wanted 50MP full frame 4k with tiny files to work on in post.

      Lack of suppot from Sony is more than enough to stop me considering them from the get go.
      I use a lot of Sony products, my xperia Z5 Premium is Sony, Ive a Duo 11 etc, Its not about not liking Sony products, its about support when you need it. Ask Matt Granger about Sony support, Im sure he would love to make another video about how it sucks.
      Together with their rather poor lens line up makes the Sony not even enter the field as a contender for anybody who seriously needs a camera all the time.
      This camera is about putting some very good features into one package.
      The 5DSR is a resolution monster but would you really use a 50MP camera for 100% of your travel photography +Tony & Chelsea Northrup ?
      You have told us in the past that the 5DSR is slow to take pictures and that you have put it asside in the past in favor of faster cameras like the 7DII.
      Its about picking the right tool for the job. Right?

    DEAR GOD THANK YOU TONY FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH! Finally, with the exception of a few other UA-camrs, you were the only one to truly point out the 5D MarkIV's flaws and I honestly appreciate that. I can't stand all the fan boying that is going on right now for the 5D Mark IV - it's refreshing for somebody to really point out the flaws and make people aware of what really matters in a camera. For video this is a deal breaker all over. For stills personally I still think there is better options. Thank you Tony for your honesty.

    I'm using a Canon 650D at the minute and I have a number of GoPro Hero3+ from doing my own drum cover videos. I'm selling the cameras to fund upgrading. I want to move into full frame for landscape photography. Should I stick with Canon and use the money I have left over for Panasonic Lumix G7 for drum videos or go the full hog and go for like D750 for Nikon's higher dynamic range? Or is Sony worth a look?
    I'm not overly wowed by the features on the 5D Mark IV if I'm completely honest.

      If you are going to spend a substantial amount of money on a camera then this is the only advice I can give you:
      1. Do NOT listen to anyone else!!!! Not fanboys, reviewers (who are often fanboys too) or salesman in shops.
      2. Do your research yourself and look at as many "real world" images online as you possibly can. Go to photo sharing sites where you will see images from pros, serious amateurs & snapshooters. Most importantly, you will see images taken in the real world, not contrived studio set ups where every camera looks good. Only look at images in their full size where you can view at 100%.
      3. Go into a shop and hold each camera of interest. See how it feels in your hands and how you like the menu systems, physical controls, etc. You are buying a camera for YOU, so it has to feel comfortable to YOU.
      4. Ignore all the hype and the complaints of others about this feature and that feature missing. Those so-called features are often nothing more than gimmicks, or only of value to some.
      5. Make sure that every lens you will need to perform your particular type of photography is available to that camera and compare the prices for building your system between the brands of interest to you.
      I'm surprised you are not wowed by the 5D Mk IV as it has improved upon every feature of the 5D III that matters to a photographer. What more could you want over a camera which has arguably the best AF out there, the best live view AF, tremendous metering, fast simple operation, great ergonomics, great build quality and durability. Comes from a line of proven cameras that last the distance and don't let you down. The 5D IV produces great IQ even at high ISOs and has an improved DR over the previous generation of Canon cameras.
      What useful 'features' do you believe the D750 has that this camera doesn't? As for image quality, you may even get a surprise there. The only RAW images I've seen so far have been real world tricky lighting situations including backlit situations, etc. The IQ looks darned good so far. I haven't seen any contrived studio lit settings, just tough out there shots. To see real world images from the D750 or D810 take a look at pixelpeeper dot com and you may get a shock. Nikons are not all that when you take them out into the real world and face some lighting challenges. Even the ISO noise is vastly inferior in real world shots to the so-called sample images manufacturers/paid reviewers give to us.

      if landscape would be the one and only relevant thing, the a7r (not r2) should be most bang for the Buck. its Bad af system isnt a Problem cause you wanna use ultrawide angle manual prime lenses anyway, plus maybe a Samyang 135 f2 or something like 200 f4 vintage or canon fd l 300mm for telephoto landscape. for really long lenses youd need la ea4 though. for just manual lenses and high image quality. yeah. a7r. if 24mp are fine i actually dont See much benefit in that application using a fullframe camera , if 8-12 (Samyang 12mmf2) mm in apsc are wideangle enough for you. at base ISO the difference wont be anything important. so then a6000.

    Tony. question? i have the Canon 70D for wildlife and I have the full frame 6D. I was awaiting the release of the 5D mark iv but after seeing so many negative comments i am reluctant to purchase it. I do mostly wildlife, macro, nature/landscapes. I do not do video at this point and i do not shoot portraits (rarely) or weddings. I am wondering with the areas that i shoot should i consider the 5dsR or go ahead and purchase the mark iv? i understand with the 5dsR that attention must be taken not to have blurred images. would the mark iv be sufficient for good landscape images? and would the 5dsR be an ok all around camera like the mark iv or is it a better portrait camera?

    Tony, quick question: does the 1.75 Crop Factor negate the shallow DOF of a full frame sensor or will the bokeh remain the same despite the crop and only the angle of view change?

    • @EricLouisYoung
      @EricLouisYoung 8 років тому

      a lens is not aware of what size of sensor lies beneath it...think about it.

    • @ropersix
      @ropersix 8 років тому

      With the crop, if you want the same composition you'd get will the full frame (and same lens), you'd have to be farther from the subject, which increases the DOF. So yes, holding the composition and lens constant, you'll get greater DOF using the crop.

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 8 років тому

      Yes! I agree with Timothy and that was my impression too. But I doubted myself when another reviewer was boasting about this full frame camera with 4K video! So I figured I ask Tony who seems more knowledgeable than the average reviewer! :) So, if I'm correct, it appears that we don't have a full frame 4K camera, but rather, 4K in actually an even smaller sensor than the standard Canon APSC sensor which is 1.6 Crop and will not have the same Bokeh and shallow DOF as the same frame shot on the same lens at the same stop on the full frame Sony A7S ii. Does that sound correct? I mean, even Super 35 is 1.5 Crop. This is 1.75. Might as well go with a 4K GH4 at 2.0 crop ant a fraction of the cost!

    • @ropersix
      @ropersix 8 років тому

      That sounds right to me. And my initial thought was the same as yours about just going with a GH4 (for the 4K video at least). The whole point of having a FF body is being able to use the larger sensor.

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 8 років тому +1

      Timothy Roper Yes!.. and the 4K video footage on the Sony A7Rii and A7Sii looks very good to me. The question will remain whether the Dual Pixel + 4:2:2 will trump the MotionJpeg & lack of Log Profile. We'll see in Tony's final review... I hope! :)

    Tony's &Chelsea Northrup is by far among my favorites ! The 5D Mark IV is not a ground breaking upgrade for current 5D mark III owners. But I would definitely recommend it to those who don't own a 5D mark III or anyone who's "tired" of his/her 5D Mark III. I strongly believe that considering the wait , Canon could have done better.

  • @jhellier
    @jhellier 8 років тому +1

    Math question... At 3:15... to estimate the % detail difference it seems you are comparing linear resolution differences as you are taking the square root of the MP ratios.
    e.g. from 5D4 -> 5DS: sqrt(50/30) = ~1.29 (~30% increase), and 5D4 -> 5DS: sqrt(50/30) + 0.2 (for no AA filter) =~0.5 (50%)
    Q) what formula did you use to calculate the %Detail decrease for 5D3 and 1DX2 in relation to 5D4? I am calculating a ~17% difference in linear resolution from the 5D3 to the 5D4 sqrt(30.4/22.1) but you have 25%?

    Tony & Chelsea , this is THE best review of the 5D Mark IV on UA-cam (so far haha). I don't usually take the time to comment on a video, but this one stood out to me SO MUCH that I had to. Coming from a engineer by trade, this review is thoughtful, critical, and (MOST importantly) scientific. You take time to break down the technical details which is unmatched on UA-cam; the scientists and engineers of the world commend you. "The 5DSr still has the better sensor" - Yes it has no AA filter and yes it has more resolution ant thus more details. Will the high ISO performance be better on the 5DSr when shrinked to 30MP? How do you already know that? Is it already clear that the dynamic range has not improved at all? How do you know that? If you do not know those things, maybe such a general word such as "better" is not the best choice of words, is it?

    Btw Tony, this camera can't shoot regular 4k, it only shoots DCI 4k, which makes the crop factor probably somewhere around 2.0 instead of 1.7 since DCI 4k always needs to be cropped since screens are 16:9. People who think this thing will shoot regular 4k, will be massively disappointed.

      it's done on purpose. it's a business. this keeps the public wanting more and buying more. if they made the "perfect" camera, people would stop buying. so the perfect camera is there; they have the technology to make them, they just never will. so all cameras that are brought out, will never be perfect; they will always have some specs missing. this is what keeps the public buying. it's business.

    • @note5camera

      i know you're half kidding, but it almost seams that way. the competition for your dollar is fierce. yeah each company has its fanboys/girls, that will point out massive pixel count, 4K, 4K@60fps, better dynamic range, yada yada yada. but like tony said about this late 2016 brand new camera is a jack of all trades, and master of none. and the worst part is, that unlike sony, this is their top dog for 3 years. unless they can release a firmware update and allow 4K out hdmi, 4K@60fps, a more efficient codec/3840 4K, they are not hitting their mark. if their mark is for it to be a video camera, alongside of a stills camera.

    Is the image of the viewfinder you showed the correct one for the 5D mk4? I see that in the image you showed there is the exposure level indicator scale on the side of the viewfinder instead of at the bottom of the viewfinder. If this is true then I'd have to say its the best new feature of the camera. But I think you just put up the 1D's viewfinder.
    I assume you know that most of your slides in the comparison sections have 1DxMII instead of the 5DmkIV.
    Good luck with the top LCD screen rants, the $0.02 cents they save using this will over ride most complaints against it.

    You know, as a Sony video amateur, I cannot understand why Canon didn't exploit the huge succes of the mk3 for videomakers. They could have killed the Sony A7 series if they had introduced a proper and good video mode. UHD in the normal format with an excellent codec and no or hardly any crop. They would sell tons of these cameras.
    Why didn't they put these features in? Unless, of course, they are not able to do that because technically, they can't.
    Very weird choices.

      I agree with you Pieter and I know why canon don't do that. If Canon put 4k with a good codec in a body with this form factor nobody will by a C300 for 15000 $ or the upcoming C100 M3 for 6000$. This is a Product Manager decision. No one like this guys ;-)

    I'll be interested to see dynamic range for the 5D4 sensor. For many photographers, 50 MP is overkill. I certainly don't need it, I've been getting by for 7 years w/ my 5D2's 21 MP. It sounds like the dynamic range of the 5D4 will beat the 5Ds as it's using the new sensor tech found in the 80D/1DX mkII.
    There do seem to be a lot of compromises w/ the 5D4, but it really feels like it's a perfect fit for me. I don't need massive MP and I mainly do photography so 1080p HDR video will be sufficient if I ever do video work.

    As someone who primarily works as an astrophotographer I am a bit torn on this one. I've built a great workflow into the Canon Mark III and have found great success over the last two years of using it. I want to say that the Mark IV has a place as a successor with greater resolution and expanded ISO capability and even the capability to shift autofocus seems like it has implications that are worth exploring. Tony I am with you 100% on a hybrid EVF - I see what the Sony a7s could do to improve astro workflows and it just seems like Canon continues to lag behind.
    I rarely feel limited by my Mark III, but I just don't see the Mark IV as clean and logical of a leap as I would have hoped.

    -only 30 FPS in 4k
    -no clean HDMI out in 4k
    -outdated MJPEG in 4k (are you serious canon? a format from the 1990s?)
    -still only 8 bit, yay for banding
    -1.7x crop....because changing out lenses each time you switch from still to video is fun!
    And it costs how much for these outdated specs? 4000 euro in Europe. Are you mental?

    I am wondering how many of these "faults" could possibly be improved and/or rectified with future firmware updates. Obviously I am aware we are stuck with things like the crop factor etc but things like 4K clean out and video codecs maybe? I read the review for the 5DIV over on DP review and with regards to the AA filter they have this to say "The 5D Mark IV includes an anti-aliasing filter, but in this case, it is a very thoughtful addition. You might lose some 'crispness' at 100%, but you lose very little actual detail while false color moiré is extremely well controlled - and moiré is a far harder issue to deal with compared to adding some sharpening your files" however what you are saying Tony is the complete opposite. I'm just days away from dropping my cash on one of these but am now leaning towards the 5DS-R. I am very very torn!

  • @sigmaoctantis_nz

    Ugh why do they have such a hard on for AA filters. Canon need to start revolutionizing, giving us what we need rather than tagging along behind the lead of other manufacturers.

    • @TERN666
      @TERN666 8 років тому +1

      Do you know a sub-36mp FF camera without an AA(besides Leica). It's not that they (canon) love lowpass filters, nikon and sony also have to use AA on their 24 mp FF cameras. On 5d4 pixel is still a bit too big for AA to be removed without consequences, that's why it's there.
      P.S. Leica m9 had an 18mp FF sensor and one could catch tons of aliasing even on quite ordinary stuff like grass, branches etc. AA filter is designed for each camera individually, so it does as little harm to sharpness as possible while eliminating defects like moire, jagged edges, stairsteps on diagonal lines etc.
      Higher mp sensors (36+mp FF, 24+mp crops)are able to resolve those things much smoother, so implementing a lowpass is not a necessity anymore.

    • @jhellier

      Using your reasoning, why does Canon have a 5DS?

    • @toddbarndollar8033
      @toddbarndollar8033 8 років тому

      because of moire and color fringing caused by higher resolution sensors.

    • @sigmaoctantis_nz
      @sigmaoctantis_nz 8 років тому +1

      My point is that I'd rather get a 5DSR over this so I don't get what the point of the 5D4 is, I don't need it's video capabilities and I'd rather see an improved version of the 5DSR with greater dynamic range.
      Moire is much less of a problem than lack of sharpness on *every* single photo you take.

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic 8 років тому +1

      AA optical filters are not necessary these days. If you do get moire you can fix it in post. The benefits are that you get better spatial resolution and more information. We have computers and technology now that can deal with it whereas in the past we didn't.

  • @puddytat62
    @puddytat62 8 років тому +2

    The smaller 4K video resolutions you referece are actually the consumer UHD formats. Any "filmaker" (not sure why we still use that as film is no longer) is going to want DCI 4K which is what Canon is releasing. Most important in this release is the HDR setting . This is a huge option. Not sure the Sony's or Panasonics have that... 4K is only a big deal because there is a slow shift to that for whatever reason. 4K is partially idea because of the ability to zoom into footage if you are releasing an HD master. The reason the files are bigger is also because of the 422 sub sampling rate. The file size is not really a big deal but 422 is a big deal. As for crop sensor.... All major video cameras ie super 35 are crop sensor cameras even RED. So the SONY A7S2 or the GH4 are all crops. Check out the crop on the C300 M2, 12 grand I think, and you will see that maybe at some point this will be avoided but from what I can see all super 35 cameras will be crop sensor.

      you are wrong on many parts
      1. the A7sII nor the A7rII doesn't crop in 4k it gives you the option (something this camera doesn't) to crop in but you can record internally 4K using the full sensor.
      2. Panasonic and Sony both have log profiles which are far better and more professional than the HDR mode of the 5DIV because it allows you to decide how much of the highlights and shadows you want to retain where there is no option here.
      3. You can output to 422 to an external recorder on both the GH4 and the A7SII and in 4k. another thing this camera can't do.
      4. Back to the crop. While almost all professional cameras use a super 35 sensor (non full frame), you fail to mention the crop on the mark iv is still greater than any of those cameras and is not a true s35.
      essentially canon released a camera with sub par video specs and codec and expect it to compete with Sony blackmagic and Panasonic for the video crowed and that's not going to be the case.

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 8 років тому

      They both do record internally 4 2 0 recordings? I believe so. Log was designed eons ago for film as an analog way of creating greater range of image. Films used to look all washed out but it was part of the process. and as such is a tried and true approach. Cannot say the Canon 5D4 would ever be considered a pro video camera for obvious reasons but lack of log is not one of them. Canon won't step on their pro video camera line features. I have seen a list of the super 35 cameras and the crop is usually around 1.4 and higher www.danielhaggett.com/blog/136-lens-comparison-and-crop-factors

      Mike, which Metabones Speedbooster is best suited for 4K Video? The .64 XL or the .71 Ultra? Both are available for the GH4, but I've never understood the pro's and con's of using one instead of the other. I have the .71 Ultra for Canon lens's and use it with my GH4, but I've been told the .64 XL might be a better choice for 4K Video or any video.

    • @mikemcglasson1286

      Joe Didit I personally use a Mitakon .726 to put canon glass on a gh4 (only really works with fully manual lenses, mitakon adapter has non-electronic communication). I haven't used a metabones personally. From what I understand, the .71 will simply give you a wider field of view than the .64. If I had to make an inference, the only reason the .64 could be better, is because of improved edge to edge sharpness. The metabones ef to bmpcc widens the field of view significantly (because despite fitting of mft, it was designed with super 16 in mind), but the edges are not very sharp when mounted on a gh4

    Would you say the full frame video on the Mark II is superior to the Mark IV??? How many GB in hour of recording time does the Mark ii use??? And comparing the Mark IV to the EOS R - WHICH WOULD you say is superior for still image quality for client work ???? Thinking of getting a used mark IV or III

    Coming from a 6D and primarily shooting landscapes and concerts would you say I should go for a 5D3 or 5DS-R? The 5DS-R is so tempting. I'm mostly concerned about the low light capability of the 5DS-R.

  • @radishfever

    It seems like the focus system is the major improvement over the Mark3. Wonder if the active focus point or points will be illuminated for aid in low light? Thanks for the honest thoughtful reviews.

  • @GusBird
    @GusBird 8 років тому

    I've preordered but I'm still pondering if the 5DSR is really the body for me. I live on a tripod and don't worry that much about size/storage issues but do really care about image quality. I can never seem to glean from the reviews (aside from cropping and file-size related detail) how image quality equates across the Canon bodies. With everything else equal, is a 20MP image from a 1DX2 better or equal to a 20MP image from a 5DSR? Does the 1DX2 impart something special when it's comes to clean color, the intangible "look" of the image, etc. And how will the images from the new 5D4 compare to that 28MP crop thing on the 5DSR? If I knew the 5DSR image quality (not just file size) was better across the board I'd go with it. I'm counting on the IV sensor image quality maybe being a bit better is some way, albeit at only 30.4MP.

      +Hank Roest I don't think Tony meant to imply (by using that chart) that MPs and detail are the only measure of IQ. It's nice to hear that you've got it all worked out, though.

    • @mhitchner
      @mhitchner 8 років тому +1

      The 5DSR would be much sharper than a 1DX II when compared at 20MP each. The 5DSR has no AA filter, so you are retaining all the detail that is lost with the 1DX in camera.

    @tony Hey I wanted to thank you for your well thought out and thorough preview of the M4's specs... however, I have been thinking about one of your noted "shortcomings" in the M4; that being of the poor compression, and file size of it's 4k video, when compared to the Sony A7R, etc. Is it possible that the M4's 4k file size is bigger "less compressed" to allow for high/fine quality 8.8 jpeg still grabs?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 років тому +1

      Nah, any given frame could have the same quality. It's not really a higher bitrate. The Canon video is just compressed using a still image algorithm rather than a video algorithm, so it's storing a TON of redundant data... all that data that doesn't change from one frame to the next.

    • @southbaycommuter
      @southbaycommuter 8 років тому

      @Tony Well , that's not good! Is that compression algorithm something that could be changed/fixed via a future firmware upgrade, if enough of us complain -or is it baked into the cpu?

    • @jaffarbh
      @jaffarbh 8 років тому

      I think it's a matter of "trade off" between file size and the processing power required to process the video files in post. However, given the increased CPU/GPU performance of recent computers, Canon has made the wrong decision

    I'm a Canon guy, full time portrait photographer, still shooting on a 5DMKII, want to upgrade to a new body. I can get the 5DMKIII for a decent price and get a pro printer, which I really want, as prints are a major part of my sales, or I can just get the 5DMKIV. Thoughts? After this, I'm thinking of just going with the 5DIII. The Mark III will still be a big upgrade for me, and will allow me to budget in the printer I want, or save the $$.

    There are benefits due to the implementation of 4K video with the 5D Mk IV... (1) It's 4:2:2 (2) The MotionJEG format means that the 8.8MP JPEG frame grabs will be of a slightly higher quality than would otherwise be the case. (3) Yes, the 4K crop factor is a pain but there is no pixel binning involved so, again, a benefit there.

    Do you think it's likely Adobe will push out an update to at least support "regular" editing of the Dual Pixel RAW? Because they update RAW support all the time for new cameras released. I know it's not that simple, but just curious if it's possible?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 років тому +1

      yeah, i mentioned this in an update in the description, but Adobe said they would update it. I'm a bit surprised, because they've failed to support raw file innovations from other manufacturers, but perhaps the Canon is a popular enough camera that it's worth it.

    haha! Loved your comment about the "retro LCD" on the top!
    I guess most of us wedding photographers actually shoot so much that we don't need to see the LCD very often. I shoot in a lot of very dark places and have learned to use the buttons and clicks without checking the LCD. If I need to look at it I know where the tiny "light" button is.
    My 5D4 is due to arrive on Thursday.

    Hi Tony, maybe you can set the camera to save standard RAW to SD slot and dual-pixel-RAW to CF slot or vice versa? Then you can use your normal workflow and if you need to rescue an image then you pull that specific one up in DPP, adjust, export to TIF and import that readable TIF into lightroom?

    Thanks Tony for this overview. Underlining what’s great and saying what’s weird without being unfair. Maybe you can answer a question in your follow up review for this camera. The 5DIV has a new chip only for lens correction or lens optimization. How is this work together with the lens correction in Adobe Lightroom. If I use the Lightroom feature and the Cannon feature, did I double correct (make it worse) my pictures?
    Thanks Bernd

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 років тому

      The in-camera correction would only help video and JPG files, so if you shoot raw, it'll still happen in Lightroom. I'm not sure if Lightroom can detect whether lens correction has already been applied--it might be in the metadata.

    If we are getting close to technology in saying it will get you close or the perfect shot first time, and no lag, does this mean we are stepping into a non thought process arena and more photographers can walk into a shop, set up business and claim to be professionals. I understand technology moves but maybe sometimes in the wrong way. Its moving away from art to convenience now right? great videos as always, love the attention to detail and clear preparation you put in.

    Tony, I really hope Canon will take your points on board. If they made a camera with all of your suggestions it would be a game changer. Even if they prioritised the photo features over video, I think most people would be happy. Another great video, thank you. Ps. Did you have a good time in Ireland? I see you got at far as Killarney in Co. Kerry. If you're back, you should spent a day or two around the coast near Dingle, Co. Kerry and in West Cork. I agree with the low pass filter that should go, unless Canon modified it somehow.
    However:
    The 5DS(R) is a high res camera for landscapes.
    The D810 and K1 also lean in the direction of high res landscape cameras.
    The 5d mk4's 30mpx sounds just about right to me as a jack of all trades. If it was 50mp they would've compromised DR, noise performance and processing speed - the buffer would've had to be massive to accommodate 7fps.

I was "waiting" for this camera to be released as to eventually get it (currently have a 6D) but I wonder if it would make sense to get this or go for the 5DS instead?

    Hi Tony, I think image transfer by WiFi is a little different on this camera. I saw a demo where they simply turned on WiFi and pressed a button on the camera LCD which said Send to Camera and it sent instantly. It appeared on the phone's screen. The camera app is also way better than Nikon's app for controlling the camera (including video) with full manual control, even manual focusing.

    Motion JPEG, which the Mark IV uses, is the standard codec for digital cinema (DCP). Yes, it's odd that this would be the codec of choice to shoot on and not ProRes or DNxHR, but at least I can understand the logic Canon may have used when making this decision. The files are huge, but I would prefer this over the h.264 compression you get in a lot of cameras.

    While I get many people on here find this camera superbly disappointing in some critical areas for vlogers and even areas of photography(it is, don't mistake me for saying otherwise), this is a perfect camera for anyone who wants a Full Frame camera that isn't getting a new one every year. I've had a Nikon D5200 for the past 3 years with some ok DX glass, and I've always wanted to jump into the Canon ecosystem when I went full frame. I can with this camera. This camera lets me not have to worry about a camera upgrade every 2 years and there's a good chance I could be using this camera for the next 4 or 6 years + which will allow me to invest in lenses and pro support(photographer insurance and other important for things business like trade guilds and portfolio reviews ect) , and when the next one comes out I'll know that all of my cards for it and glass or at least, most certainly my glass for it will work. I also know that it will(unless there's a major design flaw) almost assuredly last me 4+ years because it's based on an incremental design that's not radically new. Finally, as a university student this gives me full frame access to just about any shooting situation I could possibly want at a reasonable price(built in GPS anyone? Nikon, I'm looking at you...). I'm sure that you'll have more to say about this +Tony & Chelsea Northrup. Excellent and solid preview as always.
